Ultimately cowardly in nature, he strikes only weakened targets. He is a dedicated Nazi with associated political views.

History:

(All-Winners Comics I#4/6 (fb) - BTS) - German leader Adolf Hitler was angry that Gestapo chief Heinrich Bungler had not captured the anti-Nazi hero Destroyer. Bungler issued his commands from a fortress-like Gestapo prison.

(All-Winners Comics I#4/6) - Hitler hit Bungler and chastised him for failing to capture the heroic Destroyer. Hitler gave him one last chance or he would face death. Bungler returned to his Gestapo prison and initiated a new plan to capture Destroyer. Bungler set word that passive resistant Pastor Muller would be beheaded, which lured Destroyer into the Gestapo prison. Watched from nearby Bungler, ordered his soldiers to strike, but Destroyer kept knocking them down until he eventually feigned unconsciousness and fell. This baited Bungler to come close to kick the inert hero. Instead, Destroyer suddenly grabbed Bungler and used him as a hostage to flee. Bungler and several soldiers pursued Destroyer to the apartment of his friend Flora von Banger, but again Destroyer escaped. Bungler returned to his Gestapo prison and sadistically whipped the bound Pastor Muller, who defiantly refused Bungler's order to praise Hitler. Frustrated, Bungler had Muller dragged off for execution; meanwhile, Destroyer had stealthily returned to rescue Muller. Bungler forced Muller's head down onto the chopping block for the executioner, but Destroyer leapt in, grabbed the ax and threatened to strike Bungler. The Nazi was overcome with fear and Muller asked Destroyer to not kill Bungler; instead the Nazi collapsed. As they slipped away, Destroyer told Muller he only intended to scare Bungler.

 

Comments: Creators not credited.

It looks like Bungler had a heart attack in his last panel but his death isn't confirmed. Destroyer (Marlowe) later encounters another Gestapo Chief, Captain Maik von Nieusance in U.S.A. Comics I#6 (Oct., 1942). If he was Bungler's replacement is unrevealed.

Heinrich Bungler is very likely a reference to the (real-life) Head of the S.S. and Gestapo, Heinrich Himmler. At any rate, the two probably knew each other in some capacity in the senior Nazi Party on Earth-616.

Pastor Muller

Pastor Muller was a defiant German Christian and passive resistant who called out Nazi brutality and Hitler's mad bloodthirstiness; this made him a target for the Gestapo and he was soon caught and imprisoned in a Gestapo prison managed by Gestapo chief Heinrich Bungler, who used a rumor of execution to bait and seize the heroic Destroyer (which failed). Bungler whipped the bound Muller, who still refused to praise Hitler. Frustrated, Bungler had Muller dragged to the chopping block for execution, but the pastor was rescued by Destroyer, who grabbed the ax and threatened to strike Bungler. Muller asked Destroyer to stay his hand as taking life was considered a sin; Bungler still collapsed in fright. As they slipped away, Muller confessed he thought the hero would actually kill the Nazi, but Destroyer told Muller he only intended to scare Bungler.

   As a pastor (not priest), he was likely of the Lutheran Christian Church, which has roughly the same number of followers as the Catholic Christian Church in Germany.
