Powers/Abilities: Janine Grey is a powerful
mutant telepath and telekinetic. She was able to mentally overpower and
possess Emma Frost, herself a powerful telepath.
She could astrally project herself, invade the memories of others, and cause great pain by directly manipulating specific areas of her victims' brains.
During the conflict with GeNext, Black Marvel was able to overcome the telekinesis of Rico and the physical attacks by Becka Munroe. However, she underestimated No-Name and got bested by her, both in their astral fight and through No-Name's deception of Jenna's allies.
She used a wrist-mounted device to teleport herself and the rest of her team.

History: (GeNext#4 (fb) - BTS) - Janine Grey was a member of Shadow-X, a team of rogue mutants from Earth-81754.
(GeNext: United#1 (fb) - BTS) - Shadow-X traveled to Earth-41001 and clashed with the X-Men of that reality, becoming known to them. At some point Shadow-X's members had been reported dead and were believed to be so for over twenty years.
(GeNext#4 (fb) - BTS) - In reality, the Shadow-X became stranded on Earth-41001. They set up base in the ruins of Genosha, which remained mostly abandoned ever since the massacre of its population.
(GeNext#5 (fb) - BTS) - Shadow-X became interested in No-Name, the newest student of the Earth-41001's Xavier Institute, whose past and even name were a closely guarded secret. They determined that the girl possessed certain information of great value to them.
(GeNext#3 - BTS) - When No-Name disappeared from the walls of Xavier Institute, neither her teachers nor Shadow-X were able to track her. Janine used her powers to remotely possess the body of one of school's teachers Emma Frost, and used her astral form to trigger a scale one security alert. In the resulting chaos, No-Name's fellow students decided to steal the X-Men's Blackbird jet and head out in search for their friend, just as Shadow-X expected them to. Emma Frost became aware of Black Marvel's violation of her body and became enraged by it.
(GeNext#4) - The GeNext kids eventually located No-Name in Valle Soleada, California. Jenna teleported the Shadow-X in and announced to the youngsters that the chase was over. She then teleported both GeNext and Shadow-X to the ruins of Hammer Bay in Genosha and warned that the kids had no way to call their teachers for help through either telepathy or technology.
(GeNext#5) - Janine presented GeNext a choice -- hand
over No-Name and be allowed to live -- only to pull the girl towards
herself with telekinesis moments later. Rico tried to grab No-Name with
a force field, but Black Marvel easily overpowered him although she
commended the effort. A fight broke out, and Jenna telekinetically
tossed Rico aside before being attacked by a feral Becka.
Becka clawed at Janine's face, but Black Marvel caused Becka great pain with telepathy, giving Cyclops an opening to shoot the girl in the back. Becka passed out on top of Jenna, who tossed the girl aside and admonished Cyclops for interfering, claiming that she had everything under control. Cyclops tried to playfully flirt with her, but Janine was in no mood for fun and declared that it was time to depart along with their prize.
Suddenly, Wicked appeared -- surrounded by the ghosts of dead Genoshans -- and ordered Shadow-X to take what they came for but leave the other mutants. Janine did not argue and asked Cyclops for one more blast to take care of the loose ends before teleporting Shadow-X and their quarry away. Back inside their base, Black Marvel told No-Name that she had information that could destroy the world and destabilize entire dimensions. No-Name did not care and tried fighting, but Jenna hit the girl with a well-placed blow and had Beast and Iceman hold her in place. Janine warned No-Name that resisting would only increase the pain and entered her mind, where she saw that GeNext were already planning a rescue.
While No-Name kept fighting Janine
in her astral form, Becka attempted to sneak up on her, but Black
Marvel easily spotted the girl and pushed her back with telekinesis.
This brief distraction allowed No-Name to hit Jenna harder in their
astral fight. Janine tried to extract the information from No-Name's
head but underestimated her threat, allowing the girl to enter her mind
in turn. While their memories were briefly merged, No-Name saw just
enough to make a play and gave a sudden shriek which interrupted the
fight between GeNext and Shadow-X.
No-Name called for Cyclops, claiming that she was Janine, and that the two of them had switched bodies. No-Name spoke insults against herself to pass as Black Marvel, claiming that No-Name in Jenna's body was about to fry Shadow-X's brains with her telepathy. Janine herself was caught by surprise and could only scream "No!" as No-Name urged "her" teammates to take Jenna's body out. Black Marvel hit No-Name again, but Cyclops fell for the deception and hit Janine with an optic beam, knocking her out. GeNext finished up the remaining Shadow-X and tied them up.
(GeNext: United#1) - Jenna and her Shadow-X teammates remained restrained in the Hammer Bay until they were picked up by a S.H.I.E.L.D. team led by Val Cooper and transported away in a helicopter.
Comments: Created by Chris Claremont and Patrick Scherberger.Shadow-X, a team of alternate reality evil counterparts of the original X-Men, was first introduced by Chris Claremont in the New Excalibur series over the course of which they ended up being killed one by one. The members of the Shadow-X appearing in Reality-41001 are different from the Earth-6141 team both in appearance and in their real names, which deviate from the traditionally used forms of the original five X-Men.
It was never revealed what exactly Shadow-X wanted out of No-Name. She learned the answer from briefly sharing the mind with Janine but refused to speak about it or anything that dealt with her past. The GeNext: United sequel series had Shadow-X taken away by S.H.I.E.L.D. and quickly pivoted into a different, India-based storyline.
This profile was completed 08/20/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event to represent Tyrant's stories and characters.
