History:
(Hellhunters#3 (fb))
-Aleksandra Nightbringer was a Russian witch who fell in love with the
Devil. She made offerings of her village's livestock, crops and even
children. Eventually she fell pregnant with Satan's child, and decided
to turn Earth into a kingdom to rival Hell, but by this point the
villagers had learned of her villainy, and they burned her at the stake.
As she died Aleksandra prayed for her lover to save both her and her
unborn child, but instead he let her burn because thanks to her plans he
considered her a threat. She and the baby died in agony and rage, and
their ashes passed into the soil where the remains of all her offerings
were buried, merging together to become the Unhallowed, demonic
elementals that plagued that part of the world for a long time.
(Hellhunters#1 (fb) - BTS) - The locals learned to avoid
the region and hammered occult warnings consisting of horned deer skulls
combined with inverted crosses to contain the evil and warn others to
stay away.
(Hellhunters#1
- BTS) - In November 1943 while fleeing pursuing Russians some Nazi
soldiers including Felix Bruckner stumbled across the remains of
Aleksandra's cabin. Many were killed, but some, led by Bruckner, struck
a deal to obtain demonic power with Calphael, one of Aleksandra's
Unhallowed spawn.

It seems very unlikely that her surname actually was Nightbringer. For a start, if she was Russian then it's highly doubtful that her surname would be in English. And then of course there's the ominous aspect - if your name actually is Nightbringer, you're practically required by law to become evil and bring disaster. Presumably Nightbringer was more an epithet applied to her by the villagers she tormented, or chosen by her to represent her choice to ally with evil. And in either of those cases, it seems probable that Nightbringer was merely the translation of the Russian name she went by. Google informs me that would be likely to be either Nosovshchik, which literally means bringer of night, or Nochnitsa, which translates as night demon rather than bringer, but which is also an actual Slavic mythological type of demon believed to torment children during the night. The "Other Mother" in the book and movie Coraline was apparently an example of this creature.
Aleksandra fell in love with "the Devil" and was
pregnant with "Satan's baby" when she died - but in Marvel there are a
lot of demons who get called the Devil or Satan, so this really doesn't
identify her patron and baby daddy. Was it Mephisto,
Marduk
Kurios, Lucifer,
some combination of them during one of their gestalt moments, or another
demon entirely? I guess we'll have to wait for another appearance of
Aleksandra or the Unhallowed to see if we get confirmation or additional
clues.
Sebastian Szardos says she was a "Russian
witch" but her flashbacks offer only minimal visual clues as to when and
exactly where in Russia she hails from. Per Hellhunters#1 Felix
Bruckner's platoon stumbled across Calphael near
the remains of a wooden cabin in a snowy forest
identified as "Kaliningrad, Russia" in "December 1943", and there are
warning signs posted in the woods around the cabin warning people to
stay away, so it's fairly certain that this cabin was Aleksandra's and
she died near there. However, there are a number of problems with this.
For a start, Kaliningrad is a city, not a forest, but I think that can
just be put down to it being more accurately Kaliningrad Oblast, the
surrounding region rather than the city (kind of like NYC versus New
York State). The second problem then arises that in 1943 neither one was
called by those names, as it wasn't part of Russia at that time but
instead ruled by Germany. Instead the city was Königsberg
and the region East Prussia. It wouldn't become part of Russia and get
renamed until 1946. Prior to that it had been ruled by various past
iterations of Germany including the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire,
Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany, as well as very briefly being part of
the Kingdom of Poland (1454 to 1455) and the Swedish Empire (1656 to
1657). It was part of the Russian Empire between 1758 to 1762, so if
Sebastian was correct to call Aleksandra a Russian, she was either not
born in the region, or was either born or killed during that brief
window of Russian rule - and while it seems improbable that the
ramshackle cabin remains shown could have survived for a couple of
hundred years Sebastian does say that the Unhallowed "plagued that part
of the world for a long time."
It's also worth noting that everything we
know about her history comes from stories that would have initially been
spread by those who condemned Aleksandra and burned her at the stake,
and so could have been very biased. How often did the people accusing
others of witchcraft get it completely wrong? Certainly Aleksandra did
strike some sort of pact with the Devil, as Zarathos identifies Calphael
as her spawn in Hellhunters#4 and Calphael himself claims to be
Aleksandra's herald in Hellhunters#5, but for all we know she was
innocent of all she was accused of and only turned to the Devil when she
was to be burned to death, figuring that if she was about to be killed
for something she hadn't done then she might as well become guilty of it
and use the power gained to get revenge on her accusers. Or conversely,
perhaps she was guilty: Based on the first of the two images we see of
her when she was alive, she seems to be carrying a small wounded foal or
something similar; was this her stealing an animal to sacrifice, or was
that the Devil and did an innocent girl stumble across it, try to nurse
it back to health, and then get seduced to the dark side by him? Her
face seems frightened or concerned in that first image, suggesting to me
that she was either not evil or else this was early in her devil-worship
and she was still scared to steal animals for sacrifice. But if she was
planning to sacrifice it, why is it already covered in blood, and if
she's already cut it as part of a ritual, then why is she now going to
the effort of carrying it through the snowy woods? The more I look at
it, the more I feel that first image depicts her trying to save the
animal, not kill it.
