History:
(Thanos: Death Sentence (fb) - BTS) - Agathon was
home to the Agathonian race and to the oldest castle in its galaxy,
built of stone blocks weighing a half of a ton apiece.
(Thanos: Death Sentence (fb) - BTS) - Seeking to create a monument to his beloved manifestation of Death, the Infinity Gauntlet-possessing Thanos traveled to Agathon to claim as its building blocks the stone blocks of the oldest castle in the galaxy.
The Agathonians presumably resisted
Thanos to no avail.
Via the virtually unlimited power of the Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos exterminated the Agathonians across the planet, leaving one of them bleeding and dying to watch helplessly as Thanos hauled away the stones one by one.
Using the stones from Agathon's castle,
Thanos built with his own hands his immense Shrine to Death, floating in
space, three stories high and a quarter mile wide.
Frozen jewels shone from immense stone
columns.
Enormous gargoyles stared down from the turrets.
Twin carved faces -- a huge skull
and a beautiful young woman (the two faces of death, the destroyer and
the comforter; age and youth; horror and beauty) -- flanked the thick
wooden door that stood atop s stairway of worn slate.
Smaller skulls spilled from every
window and ran up and down the walls, creeping across the stone facade
like ivy.
Comments:
Shrine of Death created by Jim
Starlin;
Agathon and Agathonians created by Stuart
Moore.
Agathon and the Agathonians are discussed in a single paragraph on pg. 50, in which Thanos re-visits the now somewhat dilapidated Shrine.
While Thanos apparently exterminated the Agathonians, it is unrevealed whether he destroyed Agathon or just left it riddled with the corpses of the Agathonians.
Additionally, while many stories
take place over the span of a city and report the slaughter of an
entire race, the Infinity Gauntlet-possessing Thanos was more the
capable of slaying all of the Agathonians and even every living thing
on the planet, if he so chose.
Further, that power would also
have allowed Thanos to simultaneously or subsequently slay any
Agathonians who were off-planet at the time.
In Reality-616, Nebula stole the
Infinity Gauntlet and reversed all of his actions for the last 24 hours
(including exterminating half of the universe's population), but
apparently in Reality-71223, it was Thanos' paternal grandfather,
Kronos, who stripped him of his power.
Although
only mentioned in a Reality-71223
story, no other origin for the Shrine-616
exist; I think it is highly likely that Thanos-616 acquired the stones
from Agathon.
This is an image of
the Shrine-616, which may vary somewhat in appearance from the
Shrine-71223. ----------->
