History:

(Love Romances I#104/2) - Glenn Stuart was a student at State College and played quarterback for the school's football team. After one victory on the gridiron, Glenn was congratulated by the student body. Several women admired him from afar, including Diane. However, some of his fellow male students resented him because of all the attention he received from women, making it harder for them to get noticed by the female students.

One day, Diane congratulated Glenn for receiving the highest mark in the class on his history essay. Pointing to a statue of the god Apollo, Diane compared his likeness to the statue. Glenn kissed Diane on the forehead in response.

However, while Glenn was admired across the campus, he was struggling with his status, constantly worrying about what would happen to him if he failed to come in first at everything he did due to the expectations people had about him. Glenn feared that without his accomplishments, he'd be "nothing."

Glenn continued to excel, winning a sprint and setting a new record. He also scored 98/100 in an exam. One day, Glenn went to Diane and told her she stood out from the rest of the women on campus - because he'd fallen in love with her. They kissed by the statue of Apollo. From then on, they dated exclusively.

One day, just after Glenn had parted from Diane, he received a telephone call informing him his father had just suffered a stroke. Glenn raced home and spent a day by his father's bedside. The following day, his father's doctor assured him his father would recover and Glenn returned to campus.

Having lost time to study for his physics exam and distracted by thoughts of his father, Glenn realized he'd returned with just 10 minutes before the exam. He struggled with the test, believing if he failed he'd lose his status on campus and Diane wouldn't love him. Glenn tried to copy his answers by looking at another student's paper, but the professor caught him and sent him to the dean's office. The dean expelled Glenn from State College. Embarrassed and feeling disgraced, Glenn wrote an explanatory letter to Diane, then packed up his things.

As Glenn was leaving campus, Diane ran up to him and insisted she still loved him despite his failure. Diane insisted she'd leave State College and share in his "punishment as well as everything else in your life!" Despite having been expelled, disgraced and abandoned by his friends, Glenn felt better than ever because he realized Diane loved him for who he was, not for what he'd accomplished.

Comments: Created by an unidentified writer (likely either Stan Lee or Larry Lieber), Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Glenn Stuart should not be confused with:

DIANE

Diane was one of Glenn Stuart's female classmates at State College. Diane admired him from afar and compared him to a statue of Apollo. Eventually Glenn realized he loved Diand and they started dating. When Glenn cheated on an exam and was expelled, Diane insisted she'd leave State College to be with him because she loved him for who he was, not for what he'd accomplished. Comparing him again to the statue of Apollo she said, "Even a Greek god can have... feet of clay!"
