History:
(Spider-Verse I#1 / 3 (fb)
- BTS) - Lord Harold Osborne attended university alongside May Reilly.
(Spider-Verse I#1 / 3) - During a ball to announce
the debut season of Lady May Reilly in 1895, Lord Osborne asked May for
a dance. As the two danced, Lord Osborne opined that the ball was not
of May's making or desire, to which May replied that Osborne always was
the smartest boy at university. Lord Osborne recalled that May herself
was always the smartest lady, to which May noted that she was the only
lady at university. The dance was soon cut short when the sinister
Electro kidnapped the mayor and May Reilly ran, secretly changing into
her Lady Spider costume to battle Electro. Electro was subsequently
joined by other technological criminals and during the fight, Lady
Spider noticed that the Green Goblin was wearing a bejeweled tie
similar to the one worn by Lord Harold Osborne.
(Spider-Man 2099 II#8) - After finding the giant Earth-51778 robot
Leopardon on Earth-13, Earth-803's Lady Spider (May Reilly) suggested
she and Earth-928's Spider-Man 2099 fix the robot and she returned to
her home reality of Earth-803 and met with Lord Harold Osborne over
tea, secretly hoping to use his father's labs to repair Leopardon.
Seemingly unaware of May Reilly's true nature as Lady Spider, Harold
confirmed
that his father's gigantic laboratory, dubbed the Stadium, was only
slightly smaller than a football field before asking May why she was
inquiring about it. After Lord Osborne asked May to call him Harold,
May asked if he had heard of Lady Spider. Harold replied that he was
familiar with her from her past actions halting the mayor's kidnapping
and May claimed that Lady Spider was a friend of hers and had need of
the Stadium. She then informed Lord Osborne that Lady Spider's
activities there would have to be done under complete secrecy but
Harold commented that he would have to get his father's permission to
utilize the Stadium. May understood and noted that only Harold's father
could know then and Harold remarked that she was asking quite the favor
before asking May out to dinner. After May accepted the invitation,
Harold visited his father and acquired his permission to allow Lady
Spider to use the Stadium, unaware of his father's true identity as the
villainous Green Goblin.
Later,
after Lady Spider and
Spider-Man 2099 had transported Leopardon to the Stadium, Lord Harold
Osborne ventured into the Stadium, admitting that he shouldn't be there
before stopping to marvel at Leopardon. Lady Spider agreed that he
shouldn't be there and when she referred to him by name, Lord Osborne
became puzzled and asked if they had met before. The conversation was
interrupted by the arrival of the villainous Six Men of Sinistry, led
by the Green Goblin. Harold exclaimed that they were in a private
facility but Doctor Octopus knocked him aside. Following the Six Men's
defeat and Spider-Man 2099 and Lady Spider utilizing the confiscated
technology of the Six Men of Sinistry to rebuild Leopardon, Lady Spider
asked what had happened to Lord Harold Osborne after he had regained
consciousness. Spider-Man 2099 assumed Harold had fled when his life
was threatened but, at that moment, Lord Harold Osborne was
visiting his father's office to inform him of the Six Men of Sinistry's
invasion. His father told him to go away but Harold forced the door
open, only to witness his father unmasked as the Green Goblin. Calmly
stating that it seemed they had a problem, Harold's father shot him as
Lady
Spider wondered aloud where Harold might take her for their dinner.
Spider-Man 2099 replied that she would have plenty of time to find out
when she returned to Earth-803 following the defeat of their enemies,
Earth-001's Inheritors.
(Web-Warriors I#1 / 2) -
Somehow surviving being shot, Lord Harold Osborne attended a masquerade
ball through which Lady Spider chased a feline-costumed art thief. When
Osborne pulled out his pocket watch, one of the patrons asked him if
everything was alright, to which Lord Osborne slyly replied that it
seemed everything was going according to plan.
Comments: Created by Robbie Thompson and Denis Medri.
It was strongly hinted in Lord Osborne's first appearance in Spider-Verse I#1 that he was the Green Goblin, given that the story specifically shows Lady Spider recognizing the bejeweled tie on the Green Goblin as matching the one worn by Lord Harold Osborne. While this was a strong suggestion, it was not a confirmation that Harold was the Green Goblin, as Lady Spider notes that the similarity in ties and jewels would have to wait for another day. Of course, Lord Osborne's next appearance in Spider-Man 2099 II#8 confirms that Harold was NOT the Green Goblin and the Goblin was, rather, Harold's father (who is never actually named). Perhaps the jewel on the Green Goblin's tie is a family crest, therein explaining the similarities, as both Osbornes might wear that jewel on their tie to show their family crest/wealth/etc. to the public. Spider-Man 2099 II#8 also seems to do a good job of explaining the potential confusion, as it mentions Harold being familiar with Lady Spider's actions saving the mayor (because he would've been at the ball where it happened, as seen in Spider-Verse I#1) and it shows Lord Harold Osborne being in the same place at the same time as the Green Goblin, clearly showing them to be two different individuals (again, with the Goblin actually being Harold's father). Despite this nice explanation and wrap up from writer Peter David in Spider-Man 2099 II#8, things became slightly confusing again when Lord Osborne's creators, Robbie Thompson and Denis Medri, wrote a new story in Web-Warriors I#1, which seemed to again suggest Osborne was a bit shady by hinting that he might've hired an art thief to distract Lady Spider while someone (possibly himself) stole a bunch of silver from a masquerade ball. Like in his first appearance, we are never told in Web-Warriors I#1 that Lord Osborne had actually committed any crimes or that he was definitely up to anything, though it was heavily hinted that he might've hired the art thief since he mentions that everything was going according to plan when Lady Spider and the art thief ran through the ball. It's possible that Robbie and Denis' original intention was to have Harold Osborne be the Green Goblin and that story was their attempt at trying to move things back towards their original intention instead of the story Peter David came up with. That is all just speculation though and we have no real way of knowing, and Lord Harold Osborne has not as of yet been seen again since Web-Warriors I#1.
Special thanks to MarvellousLuke for helping untangle some of the confusion mentioned in the comment above!
While his eyes do seem to be blue, much like his Earth-616 counterpart, Lord Harold Osborn's eyes occasionally appear to be a dull green or gray color in Spider-Man 2099 II#8, depending on the lighting and steampunk-like coloring of the story.
Lord Osborne's last name was
spelled "Osborn" (like his Earth-616 counterpart) in Spider-Man 2099
II#8.
