MAGNETO's GIANT MAGNET

Classification: Terrestrial technology (Deviant)

Creator: Magneto (Max Eisenhardt)

User/Possessors: Magneto

First Appearance: X-Men I#6 (July, 1964)

Powers/Abilities/Functions: Magneto's giant magnet was operated by Magneto from a control panel; Magneto used a viewfinder at the panel to locate targets. The giant magnet could attract metal ships in the ocean and draw them towards it with terrific force, or cause them to be repelled. Apparently by focusing both extremes at once, it could tear vessels apart.

History:

(X-Men I#6 (fb)) - Magneto built an enormous magnet and installed it upon his island in Bermuda. One day he used the magnet on a freighter that was traveling in the North Atlantic and dragged it close to his island. Just as the crew caught sight of the giant magnet, Magneto flung the freighter away, 50 miles south of Bermuda.

(X-Men I#6) - When the X-Men followed up on the freighter's report and sailed to Magneto's island, Magneto used the giant magnet on the X-Men's ship, ripping it apart. Venturing to shore, Cyclops prepared to destroy the giant magnet but was prevented by the intrusion of Quicksilver.

When Magneto's ally the Sub-Mariner turned against him, Magneto focused the giant magnet on him, using it to force the Sub-Mariner into the ground. However, the Sub-Mariner shattered the ground, causing a shockwave that knocked the giant magnet from its foundation, wrecking it.
