History:

(Sub-Mariner Comics I#6 (fb) - BTS) - Slug Gundy was working as a logging foreman in a camp in western Canada when he was contacted by Nazi agents who offered him money by smuggling government explosives to him. He included some of his fellow loggers in the conspiracy and also enlisted Bulldog Schlump, whose sawmill was used to conceal the stolen explosives inside of hollowed-out tree logs.

The owner of the lumber camp, Jim Blake, was also responsible for rationing the dynamite on behalf of the Canadian government. When he discovered what Slug Gundy was doing, Slug murdered him. Spotting a diamond ring on Jim's finger, Slug tore off the finger while claiming his prize. Slug concealed Jim's body in the woods near the lumber camp inside one of the hollowed-out tree logs. Slug gave the diamond ring to his girlfriend Maisie and boasted to her he was selling government explosives to make more money.

(Sub-Mariner Comics I#6) - When the Sub-Mariner arrived at the logging camp after discovering Jim Blake's body, he introduced himself to Slug as "Joe Pierre" and claimed he wanted a job. Slug told him he could use more men and sent him to the camp's office to get a new outfit. When Slug saw "Joe Pierre" comforting Jim's widow, Mrs. Blake, Slug angrily told him not to waste time and change his clothes.

Slug went to a cabin with two of his cohorts and told them how he'd disposed of Jim Blake's body, which impressed them both. He reminded them to keep their eyes open and their mouths shut while they went to load more of the dynamite inside the hollowed-out logs. When "Joe Pierre" investigated one of the logs, Slug angrily attacked him and punched him in the back of the head. "Joe" fought back but ultimately pretended Slug had beaten him so he could continue to gather information.

When lumbermen arrived at the camp to pick up the dynamite promised to them in their government ration cards, Slug claimed the government was late in shipping the dynamite and told the lumbermen to leave. They refused and said they'd wait at the camp until the dynamite arrived; Slug laughed and told them to make themselves at home.

Returning to his men, Slug ordered them to float the logs containing the dynamite downriver to Bulldog Schlump's sawmill. When the logs were delivered, Bulldog gave Slug an advance on his payment until their chief arrived; Slug used the money to pay his men, then went into town to see Maisie.

While Slug was seeing Maisie in a tavern, "Joe Pierre" danced with her and he recognized the ring on her finger. When Slug moved in to attack him, "Joe" accused Slug of murdering Jim Blake. Slug told his men they had to silence "Joe" and attacked him; finally, one of Slug's men struck "Joe" from behind with a bottle. They dumped his body inside a canvas bag and threw it in the river, but naturally "Joe" survived the drowning.

Slug returned to the sawmill as he and Bulldog received payment from their Nazi employers. When the chief Nazi asked for more dynamite in a week, Slug promised he would because the government was sending him all the dynamite meant for western Canada. Suddenly, the Sub-Mariner charged into the room (now garbed in his familiar trunks) and attacked the Nazis, Slug and Bulldog. Slug turned on a woodchipper and shoved the Sub-Mariner into the chute but the Sub-Mariner grabbed Slug, hurled him into the blades then swung himself out of the chute. Slug was completely eviscerated by the woodchipper.

Comments: Created by an unidentified writer and Carl Pfeufer.

Given that British Columbia is Canada's top western logging province, it seems most likely Slug Gundy's activities were set in that province.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Slug Gundy should not be confused with:

MAISIE

Maisie was Slug Gundy's girlfriend and lived in the town nearest to the lumber camp. Slug gave her the diamond ring he took off Jim Blake's body. When he boasted to Maisie that he was stealing government explosives and selling them for money, Maisie was put off by his actions. The final straw for her was when "Joe Pierre" (the Sub-Mariner) made her realize the diamond ring had been taken from a dead man. Maisie offered to help "Joe" stop Slug and she contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who arrested Bulldog Schlump and the Nazis. Maisie was attracted to "Joe" but when she asked him for his true identity he confessed he was Namor, the Sub-Mariner as he swam away, wishing her good luck. "Not the famous Sub-Mariner!?" Maisie exclaimed. "Catch me somebody, I'm gonna faint!"

BULLDOG SCHLUMP

Bulldog Schlump was the owner of a sawmill downriver from the logging camp where Slug Gundy was situated. Like Slug Gundy, Bulldog was a fifth columunist working for the Nazis. The Sub-Mariner captured Bulldog and turned him over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
