History:

(Tales of Justice I#61/2 (fb) - BTS) - Patrick Carter was raised in the north of the Yukon Territory. He and his half-brother Pepe sometimes played in a cave out in the wilderness. As a young man, Patrick joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

(Tales of Justice I#61/2) - When Pepe became a criminal and was wanted for crimes in the Yukon, Patrick asked to join the party which the RCMP was sending in pursuit of Pepe. Patrick's superior officer was concerned Patrick was too inexperienced for such a dangerous undertaking but finally agreed to let him accompany officers Pierce and King in their search for Pepe.

As Pierce, King and Patrick set out from their stockade, Patrick realized the other two men considered themselves unlucky for being made to take him along. By the time they stopped to camp for the evening, Patrick was becoming nervous. When he heard noises near the camp at night he fired blindly into the dark and had to be stopped by Pierce and King, who informed him he was wasting ammunition by shooting at wolves in the dark.

The next day's afternoon the three RCMP officers reached Whitehorse and learned Pepe had been there only hours before and was carrying a rifle. A local named Pierre directed them to follow a trail headed north.

At dusk, Pierce and King noticed bootprints in the snow belonging to Pepe but as they prepared to continue the pursuit, suddenly Pepe fired on them from a point overlooking the field. Pepe hit Pierce in the left arm and King and Patrick helped tend to the wound.

After dark, Pierce, King and Patrick continued their pursuit but Patrick recognized they'd reached the same area where he and Pepe played when they were children. Patrick ventured off on his own and tracked Pepe directly to the same cave he used to hide in. Knowing all the secrets of teh cave, Patrick was able to corner him and force him to surrender. Patrick explained to Pierce and King how he'd known where to catch Pepe and the three RCMP officers escorted him back to the stockade.
