History:
(Two-Gun Kid I#60/1 (fb) - BTS) - Clem Carter grew up
with Nancy Carter as step-siblings. Nancy felt close to him as her only
living relative, but he hung around Tombstone town's rough men and
bullies.
(Two-Gun Kid I#60/1) - Clem was among the town ruffians bullying and roughhousing newcomer Matt Hawk, who had arrived in Tombstone as the town's new lawyer, until Nancy arrived and shamed the bad men into leaving. Soon after, the same men harassed former gunslinging legend Ben Dancer, who escaped and over several months mentored Hawk into becoming the Two-Gun Kid. Dancer left Tombstone but Clem and his fellow gang members sought revenge on Dancer and ambushed his stage coach. Two-Gun Kid rescued Dancer, and showed mercy to Clem and let him go for the sake of Clem's step-sister, although Dancer suspected Clem's insidious nature would cause trouble again.
(Two-Gun Kid I#60/3 (fb) - BTS) - Clem and his fellow
gang members masked up and robbed Hawk of all his money, including that
Nancy had given for investment. But Hawk recognized Clem's voice among
the robbers. The thieves rode off to their hideout to split the loot.
(Two-Gun Kid I#60/3) - Nancy rescued the bound Hawk
and went to inform the sheriff and try to tell Clem of the robbery.
Hawk chose not to tell Nancy of Clem's involvement due to his loyalty
to Nancy. Hawk rode off as the Two-Gun Kid vigilante, following the
crooks' tracks. Clem expected a bigger cut of the money, but was shot
in the dispute by the main outlaw. Witnessed by the Kid, he burst
through and fought
off each gang member, but a stray bullet hit a lantern and the fire
spread quickly through the old wooden hut. The outlaws escaped and the
Kid grabbed the money and Clem's body, but he was already dead. The
sheriff and his posse arrived, judging the Kid to be one of the
thieves, forcing the Kid to flee. Clem's body was recovered and Nancy
blamed the Two-Gun Kid for Clem's death, hating him for it, despite
hearing that he had
returned the money.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers.
His formal/business attire in the second story (with arm braces) suggests he normally held down some sort of office or shop position.
