AVENGERS HELICOPTER
Classification: Terrestrial technology
Creator: Unrevealed (likely Tony Stark)
User/Possessors: Avengers (Captain America/Steve Rogers, Giant-Man/Hank Pym, Iron Man/Tony Stark, Thor, Wasp/Janet Van Dyne), Rick Jones
Aliases: "Whirlybird," "Jetcopter"
First Appearance: Fantastic Four I#25 (April, 1964)
Powers/Abilities/Functions: The Avengers' Helicopter had a standard helicoper configuration and could transport at least six people aboard. It contained a radio which connected to the frequency used by the Teen Brigade. It was referred to as a "jet" which suggests it could attain higher velocities than conventional helicopters.
History:
(Fantastic Four I#25) - The Avengers and Rick Jones boarded the Avengers' Helicopter as they searched for the Hulk from the air but they narrowly missed seeing him.
(Avengers I#5) - The Avengers and Rick Jones flew their helicopter near the Los Diablos Missile Base to face an incursion by the Lava Men. General "Thunderbolt" Ross was irate when he saw their helicopter landing in a military zone, but then he recognized from the markings that it was the Avengers' vehicle and they had A-1 clearance to land anywhere. At one point, to drive back the Lava Men, Giant-Man turned on the helicopter's blades and held it sideways so the helicopter would generate a blast of wind to knock the Lava Men back into their underground tunnels. After the Lava Men were beaten, Rick Jones received a radio message over the helicopter's radio from his friends in the Teen Brigade, alerting the Avengers to another emergency.
(Avengers I#6 (fb) - BTS) - On their way back to Manhattan, the Avengers paused in Chicago, Illinois to refuel the helicopter, during which Captain America showed the team the new gadgets Iron Man had installed in his shield.
(Avengers I#7) - Giant-Man and the Wasp took a brief absence from the Avengers to perform an investigation of insect life in New England and the two flew the helicopter for their trip. When Thor fell under the mental control of the Enchantress, he summoned Giant-Man and the Wasp back to Manhattan. While they were flying over the city in the helicopter, Thor attacked the vehicle and smashed it into pieces with one blow from his enchanted hammer.
(Avengers I#21) - The Avengers later adopted a new helicopter to replace the one Thor destroyed. Captain America was piloting it in a patrol over Manhattan when he spotted the costumed criminal Power Man (Erik Josten) and landed the helicopter so he could attempt to stop him.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and George Roussos.
The stylized 'A' on the helicopter is interesting; the Avengers' decorative 'A' desgined by Gaspar Saladino which we're used to, wasn't introduced until 1972.
