First Appearance: Black Panther VII#9 (April, 2019)
History:
(Black Panther VII#9 (fb)) - Eons ago, the giant Jengu ruled the seas of Agwé.
From the Jengu, the Teku-Maza
evolved into aquatic humanoids, building a great civilization beneath
the waves. Nonetheless, they continued to revere the Jengu, whose whim
moved the waves.
Eventually the Empire of Wakanda
came to Agwé to conquer it. The Teku-Maza fought them, but the
Imperials overpowered them, and the Jengu were hunted to near
extinction.
The Teku-Maza were enslaved, their memories were ripped from them, and their culture was plundered.
One Jengu survived N'Jadaka's assault, and it hid away in the depths of the planet, in the deepest oceans.
(Black Panther VII#9 (fb) - BTS) - The Teku-Maza N'Yami was
born off-world, away from Agwé, and had her memories stripped by the
Empire. Though she never recovered her memories, she believed the key
to the process was on Agwé.
After joining the Maroons (the rebels against the Empire), N'Yami
eventually returned to her ancestral home, where she founded and led
the Revolutionary Guard in a successful struggle that liberated the
planet.
(Black Panther VII#9 (fb)) - When the Teku-Maza rebelled again, the last of the Jengu
joined the battle.
(Black Panther VII#9 (fb) - BTS) - Via its connection to the planet, the Jengu told the Teku-Maza of their past history.
(Black Panther VII#9 (fb) - BTS) <At least five years before the main story> - N'Yami left Agwé and rejoined the main branch of the Maroons, rising in
the ranks to become commander.
Eventually N'Yami was killed by Manifold (Eden Fesi, who had fallen under Imperial Control) when the Empire discovered the Maroons' main base and destroyed it, setting the rebellion back years.
<Three years before the main story> - The Empire returned, and the rebellion had to fight to preserve their victory. They wished to forge an alliance with N'Yami's Maroons, but when their entreaties were left unanswered (as the Maroons were running for their lives), new methods were considered. Jafari thought to sue for peace with the Empire by offering up the Jengu.
Considering this a betrayal of all N'Yami had stood for, Farouk led a rebellion against Jafari.
(Black Panther VII#9 (fb) - BTS) - Farouk at least
believed that Jafari, having failed to deliver the Jengu, had promised
to deliver the likes of T'Challa and Nakia (prominent members of the
Maroon rebellion following N'Yami's death).
(Black
Panther VII#9 (fb) - BTS) - Seeking the Jengu's scale to restore the
memories of the Nameless (the various peoples whose memories been
erased/submerged by the Empire of Wakanda), T'Challa, Nakia and other
Maroons traveled to Agwé, meeting with Commander Jafari aboard the
Zhingha. They agreed to aid him against what Jafari claimed were
enemies of the Teku-Maza Revolutionary Guard, outlaws posing as rebels
who were willing to sell the Taku-Maza back into bondage for a few
Imperial credits; however, these were actually Farouk and the
true/loyal rebels.
(Black Panther VII#9) - In aquatic suits, T'Challa, Nakia and the other Maroons departed Farouk's Zhingha ship and engaged the "outlaws." T'Challa and Nakia, at least, were overwhelmed and transported to the rebel base. There Commander Farouk released their bonds and returned the Spear of Bashenga to T'Challa as a show of good faith and explained how they had been deceived by Jafari. Farouk subsequently explained the history of the Jengu and Teku-Maza.
The rebel base was soon after assaulted by Imperial forces led by Manifold.
(Black Panther VII#10 (fb) - BTS) - The Askari (Imperial Forces) infiltrated the Jengu lair.
(Black Panther VII#10) - Aboard the Mackandal ship,
above the planet Agwé, Taku reported to Commander M'Baku that the Empire's forces
were not letting up and while their shields were holding, their engines
were gone, and they were dead in space. With no word from T'Challa and
Nakia, who were still planetside, Commander M'Baku ordered Taku to scramble the
Zulu ships to buy some time.
T'Challa stated that taking out
Manifold was the key to the battle, and Farouk suggested that the
Manifold's target was likely the Jengu. Returning to aquatic armor,
they challenged Manifold, but he made portals to prevent blasts from
striking him. Farouk eventually used proximity charges to stun
Manifold, after which the rebels engaged the Askari.
When an Askari agent held a gun to
Farouk's head, he remotely instructed the rest of the Teku-Maza to lay
down their weapons as the future of their people depended on it.
However, after Jafari brought the rebel leaders to the bridge and
discussed compensation for his successes, Achebe -- who had seemingly
been a loyal Askari leader -- apparently fatally shot Jafari, activated
a panel on his uniform that caused explosions in the armor of the other
Askari present as well as in the nearby Imperial ship. The Bast, having
possessed N'Jadaka's daughter, Zenzi, claimed credit for this action.
M'Baku and Taku subsequently stood in shock as N'Jadaka's counselor Achebe destroyed several Askari, restored the mind/will of Manifold, who transported T'Challa and Nakia back to Mackandal, after which the Imperials ship detonated, all apparently a result of the Bast-possessed Zenzi (N'Jadaka's daughter).
(Black Panther VII#11) - From the rebel base, the
Askari reported that they had secured the Jengu and that the Teku-Maza
had all surrendered. Achebe put them in contact with Princess Zenzi,
still possessed by Bast, who commanded the Askari to kill themselves;
unable to resist Bast's power, the Askari detonated their armors and
perished.
Teku-Maza rebels confirmed to
Farouk that the Jengu was secure. After the group had traveled to the
rebel base, Bast noted how N'Jadaka had stolen much of her power, and
Manifold explained how T'Challa had sent Wakandans from Earth on a
mission that had led to the founding of the Empire of Wakanda. Bast
further advised them that their plan to use the Jengu's scale and the
Vibranium to access the memory archives was a known of by N'Jadaka, who
had prepared a trap. She explained that she could restore T'Challa's
memories and he could access the spirit plane Djalia to access the rest
of the Wakandans' memories.
Bast worked with the Jengu to restore T'Challa's memories.
(Black Panther VII#12) - Aboard the Mackandal,
orbiting Agwé, Farouk and Achebe revealed the plot to sacrifice Agwé --
using the M'Kraan Shard and the raw Vibranium they had collected to
detonate Agwé's core, while having Manifold evacuate the population --
to slay Emperor N'Jadaka.
Bast and the Jengu restored T'Challa's memories.
(Black Panther VII#13 - BTS) - As T'Challa established a connection to
Wakanda Prime on Earth, Taku warned Commander M'Baku that he was sapping energy from the Mackandal's critical systems energies as it orbited Agwé.

The text feature at the end of
Black Panther VII#9 noted that Agwé was a Jovian planet whose mass
consists of liquid and is home to the amphibious Teku-Maza, one of the
earliest peoples to be incorporated into the Wakanda Empire. The
Teku-Maza were originally aquatic, but after certain genetic
modifications, they became amphibious.
Sacrificing a planet and a 20% of
its population to kill Emperor N'Jadaka was a harsh choice, but as it
failed to kill N'Jadaka, it is really tragic.
I did not see anything that indicated that the Jengu
was transported off-planet, but presumably as it was worshipped by the
Teku-Maza, that would have been done very early in the transport
process.
I would ASSume
the water world Agwé's name was deliberately chosen to be similar to
"agua" the Spanish word for water...or some other language's similar
word. Some relevant, progressively modified, history of the "Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda"
Agwé is a Loa sea god.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Agwé has no known connections to
![]() Farouk led the Revolutionary Guard, an army of Teku-Maza who opposed the Empire of Wakanda. After Jafari had feigned an alliance with the Maroons, Farouk had T'Challa and Nakia transported here, where he revealed Agwé's history. |
![]() After Bast and Achebe had destroyed the Askari present on Agwé, the Maroons used this as a base to coordinate efforts to restore the memories to those mind-wiped by the Empire. |
![]() The Jengu assisted the power-limited Bast in restoring T'Challa's memories, and T'Challa facilitated the restoration of other Wakandans' memories. Farouk remained in the base as Manifold transported most of the Agwé's population away and when he detonated the core-killer. --Black Panther VII#9 (10-14 |
