History: (Journey into Mystery I#9) - Deciding that life in Dimension X was a "dull green plain," Zadixx took note of life in Earth's dimension. Building his Cyclotron, he and a small cohort of allies brought the device to the tunnels beneath the New York Public Library and activated it. With the Cyclotron activated, time stopped for all humans on the planet.

Using a "mist bath of immunity," Zadixx unfroze scientist Wilbur Thompson. Zadixx explained his actions to the scientist that he would eventually de-atomize the entire human race so that his people could occupy the Earth. Zadixx brought Wilbur to the New York Public Library and asked him to explain all of Earth's scientific discoveries to him. Many of them were known to Zadixx but he was intrigued to learn about the hydrogen bomb. Eventually, Wilbur began to play on Zadixx's ego, saying he doubted the Cyclotron existed. Zadixx brought him to the Cyclotron to prove its existence to him. Wilbur snuck a package of dynamite to the Cyclotron so that he could destroy the device and thereby rescue all the frozen humans. However, when he asked Zadixx how he would de-atomize humanity, Zadixx helpfully explained he would destroy his own Cyclotron. Wilbur's bomb went off just then and all humans (except Wilbur) vanished from the Earth.

(Journey into Mystery I#10) - Zadixx continued to study books in the New York Public Library and decided to use humanity's knowledge about hydrogen bombs and guided missiles to begin a space program so that he could conquer other worlds, dubbing himself "Zadixx the Omnipotent." Zadixx sent a broadcast back to all the former residents of Dimension X, reminding them he was the one responsible for the conquest of Earth and stating that he was stripping the leaders of Dimension X of all authority. Pockets of resistance began forming against Zadixx in Europe and Asia so Zadixx decided he would use the hydrogen bomb to destroy his enemies. Overhearing this, Wilbur went back to the Cyclotron and rebuilt it then reset the machine's time meter to the moment just before Zadixx invaded the Earth. Zadixx discovered Wilbur about to activate the machine and tried to stop him but the Cyclotron reset time. However, the "mist bath" which made Wilbur immune to the Cyclotron was still in effect, leaving him inside Dimension X until it wore off. Zadixx prepared to spray Wilbur but the mist wore off and Wilbur broke back into Earth's dimension -- but journeying through the barrier between dimensions had transformed him into a creature from Dimension X.

Comments: Created by an unknown writer and Jerry Robinson.

Wilbur's usage of Zadixx's Cyclotron to reset time to before Zadixx's invasion of Earth effectively diverged the events of Zadixx's successful Earth invasion (reality-35722) from reality-616. Apparently, in reality-616, Zadixx was subsequently defeated during his invasion or perhaps he decided not to invade in the first place this time, and the transformed Wilbur, now native to the diverged reality-35722, presumably remains in reality-616 somewhere. --Proto-Man

CLARIFICATIONS:
Zadixx should not be confused with:

CyclotronCyclotron

The Cyclotron was Zadixx's invention which he used to stop time for all humans on the planet Earth. The only way to neutralize the Cyclotron's effects was to spray a person with the "mist bath of immunity." Wilbur Thompson destroyed the Cyclotron but this caused it to de-atomize all humans on Earth. Wilbur later rebuilt the Cyclotron and reset its time-meter, which restored the Earth and all its people to the way they were before Zadixx's invasion.

Wilbur ThompsonWilbur ThompsonWilbur as an alien

Professor Wilbur Thompson was a scientist in New York City who was chosen by Zadixx to remain unaffected by the Cyclotron so that he could educate Zadixx about humanity's scientific achievements. When Wilbur learned where the Cyclotron was located, he used dynamite to destroy it, only to learn that this caused all humans on Earth to be de-atomized. As Zadixx continued to conquer the planet, Wilbur rebuilt the Cyclotron and reset its time meter to the moment before Zadixx invaded. This restored everyone to Earth but because Wilbur had been exposed to the "mist bath" by Zadixx, he was then trapped in Dimension X until the mist wore off. As the mist's effects faded, Wilbur was able to return to Earth's dimension but the mist and his journey between dimensions had transformed him into a creature like those of Dimension X.
