First Appearance: Dreadstar I#4 (May, 1983)

Powers/Abilities: Z was a dangerously powerful being with a variety of technological weapons and some degree of mystical power. z-8116-zygotean-ds7-mostlyfull-cloakopen

His mystical powers were undefined, and his body was apparently riddled with weaponry and computerization such that there was not a distinct point where tissue ended and machine started. Both his mind and technological features were blocked from conventional telepathy and cybernetic telepathy (which could access and control computers and most forms of technology).

Z could walk though the air on energy platforms as well as levitate, hovering and flying short distances at moderate speeds. It is unrevealed whether this was a function of his equipment, his cybernetic implants, his mystical abilities, or some other feature.

He could project eyeblasts of unspecified nature and power; their energy could be absorbed and/or deflected by Dreadstar's sword of power.

Over his left hand he wore a blaster that could rapidly project powerful buforce fieldrsts of energy as well as bullet-like projectiles.

Z possessed a virtually impenetrable force field, which deflected impacts and energy attacks; it was powerful enough to protect him from Dreadstar's sword of power or a large amount of collapsing masonry. However, some measure of kinetic force was transferred from attacks, as he could be knocked back and/or out of the air with sufficiently forceful strikes. The field's power was limited, as repeated powerful strikes could eventually overload it and shut it down.
He was possibly able to expand his force field to allow him to escape from objects surrounding him, or perhaps he could generate powerful explosive force from his body via other means.

Z could approach the feral Oedi, who possessed enhanced auditory (hearing) and olfactory (smelling) senses, undetected.

Following having had Gregzor rebuilt as a cyborg, Z could control Gregzor's mind and/or body as desired.

Z was highly intelligent and a highly skilled strategist. He was willing to manipulate and/or sacrifice anyone or anything for his goals. He was experienced in operating a starship and its advanced technology by himself.
His fatal flaw was his desire to prolong vengeance in hopes of finding the very best opportunity, rather than striking when the opportunity was available.

The mystical powerful and sensitive Syzygy Darklock sensed something of the mystical about Z "unfocused, only a part of his whole but still a considerable force."

Height: Unrevealed (approximately 6'1", based on Dreadstar's height of 5'11"; presumably 1" to 3" taller with helmet on)
Weight: Unrevealed (with his lean frame and amputated arm, I'd think 180 lbs. would be a good estimate for that height, but he apparently has cybernetic implants of unrevealed composition throughout his body; additionally, his armor helmet and hand weapon are of unrevealed composition; perhaps closer to 195 lbs.?)
Eyes: Solid red
Hair: None
Skin: Light yellow to green
Other distinguishing features:
Z's right arm was amputated just below the shoulder. His bulky cloak covered the fact that he had only one arm.

Like other Zygoteans, his remaining arm was disproportionately long and his hand disproportionately long and large (although this was not notable when he wore his hand weapon).

Z had the typical elongated nose of a Zygotean.

History:

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb) - BTS) - Like other Zygoteans, Z-7458 ritually amputated one of his arms as proof of their superiority. As Z-7458 was a rare left-hander, he amputated his right arm.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) <1981 AD, Earth calendar> - Z-7458 was a scientist and explorer during "the golden age of the Zygotean dynasty," assigned to chart the outer reaches of the Milky Way galaxy for future conquest; though lonely, he performed his duty.

As much of his work was done by computer, he had many idle hours to fill, and he spent some of his free time monitoring military ether transmissions. Picking up a report on the Orsirosian Aknaton leading a band of resistance fighters, Z-7458 researched Zygotean files on Aknaton and his agent Vanth. His limitless time to review the files and perhaps his not actually being part of the conflict allowed Z-7458 realized Aknaton's goal.

Z-7458 tried to reach command central with his conclusions, but realized it was too late as reports came in of Aknaton's group having arrived on Dreamsend, the site of the Infinity Horn, the galactic doomsday device intended to exterminate the Zygoteans the only way Aknaton had believed possible. z-8116-zygotean-ds9-z-7458

With nothing to do but save himself in hopes of aiding any survivors and/or continuing the Zygotean dynasty, Z-7458 fled the Milky Way.

Having waited long enough to doubt his deductions, Z-7458 was about to turn around when the Milky Way abruptly ceased to be as the Infinity Horn was activated.

Even from ten light years out, the impact was devastating, although his ship's sturdy construction saved him. Once the turbulence had subsided, he returned to the region of now-absolute darkness and found no survivors, except Aknaton and Vanth, in suspended animation within a mystic sphere. z-8116-zygotean-ds9-suspended

Z-7458 set his laser-sights on them, intending to punish them, but he ultimately held back, deciding that execution in their sleep would be too easy on them and that he needed to fully savor his vengeance. Z-7458's calculations showed that they would land in the Empirical galaxy in a million years, so he retired to his ship's cryogenic chamber and programmed his ship's computer to navigate there.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) - A million years later, Z-7458 awoke to find himself in the Empirical galaxy's center.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb) - BTS) - Z landed on the planet Caldor.

(Epic Illustrated#9 - BTS / Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) - From a nearby hill, Z-7458 watched Aknaton and Vanth land and awaken on Caldor. He was surprised when Vanth slew Aknaton himself, but resolved that Vanth would have to suffer the punishment meant for two. He watched Vanth depart to start his new life.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb) - BTS) - Z-7458 appeased his anger at losing a chance at vengeance on Aknaton by desecrating his grave.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) - As soon as he was convinced Vanth was firmly entrenched on Caldor, Z-7458 left the planet, traveling across the galaxy to join the royal forces of the Monarchy. z-8116-zygotean-ds9-helmet-profile

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) - Having donned a helmet that concealed his entire head, a full-body cloak that concealed his amputated arm, and a blaster weapon that concealed his left hand, Z-7458 identified himself only as Z.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) - Swiftly rising through the Monarchy's ranks, Z (as he identified himself) soon became head of the empire's intelligence service, which gave him the resources needed to monitor Vanth. Z was pleased to see how happy Vanth had become in his new life, knowing he would be able to destroy that life.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#4: Dreadstar / Dreadstar I#9 (fb)) - Coming across an old report on the Instrumentality's efforts to produce super-soldiers from hybrid cat-men, Z kept secret that the cat people had turned out to be peaceful farmers, and he instead convinced King Nellor that the cat people were the greatest threat the Monarchy had ever faced.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#4: Dreadstar - BTS / Dreadstar I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Upon Nellor's orders, Monarchy forces slaughtered the village of the cat people, killing them all, as well as Vanth's wife, Delilah; only Vanth, who was out visiting with the alien mystic Syzygy Darklock, and the young cat man Oedi survived.

(Marvel Graphic Novel#4: Dreadstar - BTS / Dreadstar I#1 (fb) - BTS) - As Z had planned, Vanth vengefully slew Nellor, leaving the Monarchy's rule to Gregzor, a weak ruler Z would be easily able to control or override.

(Dreadstar I#5 (fb) - BTS) - After the Barons of Industry wrested power from the Monarchy's King Gregzor, becoming the two rulers of the realm while leaving him a relative figurehead, they placed the mysterious man known only as Z as Gregzor's vizier.z-8116-zygotean-ds4-fully-cloaked

(Dreadstar I#5 (fb) - BTS) - Seeing Z performing unspecified acts, Gregzor considered him a man of great power and for unexplained reasons came to believe that Z came from outside the galaxy.

(Dreadstar I#5 (fb) - BTS) - The military began following Z.z-8116-zygotean-ds4-airwalk

(Dreadstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Despite being ruler of the Monarchy, King Gregzor feared the mysterious man called Z.

(Dreadstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Z summoned Gregzor to view a transmission from Vanth, now known as Dreadstar.

(Dreadstar I#4) - Z showed Gregzor the transmission of Dreadstar offering him 20 interstellar teleportation drives and requesting clearance to land at the palace airstrip.

As Dreadstar had slain his father and predecessor, King Nellor, Gregzor suspected a trick, Z advised him that Dreadstar likely wished to preserve the Monarchy to oppose their galactic rivals, the Instrumentality.

(Dreadstar I#4 - BTS) - Meanwhile, the Lord Papal sent Agent Darkness/Hand of Darkness to assassinate Gregzor to throw the Monarchy into disarray long enough to delay their utilization of the teleportation drives for the Instrumentality to teleport their own destroyers in and annihilate the Monarchy's throneworld, Jewelworld.

(Dreadstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - Having heard word of the plotted assassination of Gregzor and wishing to test Dreadstar and his crew's motivations and abilities, Z arranged to have his cyborg warriors attack them.

(Dreadstar I#4) - After Dreadstar and his crew (Syzygy Darklock, Oedi, Skeevo Phlatus, Rainbow, Willow) landed in Jewelcity's royal spaceport, Z ordered the cyborg soldiers to attack. After having seen enough of their abilities and noting that none of them had made a move for Gregzor, Z called a cease fire.

After instructing the guards to gather their disabled (but not slain) comrades, Z descended to their level, confirmed that Dreadstar and company had passed his test and explained his reasons; Z further noted that had they been assassins and gone after Gregzor, he would have stepped in personally.

After Dreadstar showed the teleportation drives, Z had technicians summoned to begin installation immediately, and he acknowledged that this had earned them forgiveness for past sins. Z then detailed the Instrumentality's planned assault and requested Dreadstar's crew to protect Gregzor, noting that he himself was but a scientist and statesman.

Z agreed to Dreadstar's demand of a battle cruiser as payment and then instructed Dreadstar and company to prepare to do this work during a reception in the palace in one hour.

(Dreadstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - As Dreadstar and company prepared for the reception, Willow set up a five-way sonic telepathic link-up to discuss their impressions on Z:

    Skeevo merely noted that Z seemed to be "one bad dude";
    Syzygy sensed something of the mystical about him but unfocused, only a part of his whole but still a considerable force;
    Oedi also sensed power, and his senses told him that Z was partly cybernetic, but that there did not seem to be a distinct point where the man ended and the machine started;
and Willow noted that Z's body was riddled with weaponry and computerization, but that her cybernetic telepath powers could not make contact with the circuitry or the man.
Dreadstar finally concluded that their present ally could prove to be a deadly foe, but noted that Z seemed curiously familiar.

(Dreadstar I#4 (fb) - BTS) - As Dreadstar's request, Z had all but one entrance to the hall closed to allow Willow to check out each guest as they arrived.

(Dreadstar I#4) - Dreadstar explained to Z that Syzygy and Z would stay by the throne, while he, Oedi, and Skeevo would wander the crowd; they both acknowledged that as the message regarding the assassin was uncoded, this was a suicide mission.

(Dreadstar I#4 - BTS) - A shapechanger, Agent Darkness entered the throne by taking the form of a servant Willow had already scanned.

(Dreadstar I#4) - After the disguised Agent Darkness gave Gregzor a poisoned drink, Oedi, whose sense of smell had previously recognized him as different and had detected the poison, stopped Gregzor from drinking and identified the assassin.z-8116-zygotean-ds6-handweapon

(Dreadstar I#4 - BTS) - Oedi located and confronted the fleeing and shapechanging assassin, who fell to his apparent death.z-8116-zygotean-ds4-helmet-front

(Dreadstar I#4) - Oedi informed Z of the assassin's fate. Z stood silently as Oedi explained that while he could never forgive the Monarchy (and specifically Gregzor's father) for exterminating his people, he was just doing his job.

(Dreadstar I#5 (fb) - BTS) - The Monarchy gifted Dreadstar and his crew with the battle cruiser Queen Saleenor III, which they renamed Beauty. The ship was overhauled to be suited for their five-man crew (as opposed to the previous design to be operated by fifty).

(Dreadstar I#5 - BTS) - Unhappy with the state of the Monarchy, Gregzor shared information with Dreadstar, telling him what he knew of Z, including his belief that Z had come from outside the galaxy and the fact that Z was missing his right arm. These two pieces of information led Vanth to suspect that Z was actually Aknaton.

(Dreadstar I#6) - After Dreadstar and company revealed their messianic agent, Maxilon, secretly a robot designed to provide an alternative to the Instrumentality religion, Z told Gregzor that Dreadstar had figured out to fight religion without creating martyrs. Z further noted that Dreadstar was a genius and a skilled tactician, but that Maxilon was likely a smokescreen of little import. Dreadstar, however, was an enemy they would soon have to deal with.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb) - BTS) - Z plotted to destroy the Monarchy Dreadstar had supported so as to leave the galaxy at the mad hands of the Lord Papal and the Instrumentality.

(Dreadstar I#7) - After Gregzor dropped a cassette of information from the palace balcony to the waiting Oedi, Z caught him in the act and shot him through the chest. Z then told him that the time had come her the two of them to gain Z's long-sought vengeance on Vanth Dreadstar.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb) - BTS) - Z had Gregzor rebuilt as a cyborg under his control.

(Dreadstar I#10 (fb) - BTS) - As Dreadstar could absorb energy, at some point, Z had his hand weapon to fire projectiles.

(Dreadstar I#8 (fb) - BTS) - Z had all of the Monarchy's destroyers save us assigned to high-priority missions in distant parts of the galaxy, leaving only one on duty near Jewelworld.

(Dreadstar I#8) - Z met with the Lord Papal and his operatives on the barren planet JRW-3, supply him with "cassettes" containing all the information he would need on destroyer deployments, troop strengths, planetary fortification specs, in order to allow the Instrumentality to destroy the Monarchy.

In return, Z only asked that the Papal would not bomb Jewelcity's royal palace during the Instrumentality's conquest of Jewelworld as he (Z) would be inside that structure, performing another service for the Papal: Killing Vanth Dreadstar.

full body - cloak open - showing amputated arm(Dreadstar I#8 - BTS) - After reviewing his history with his crew, Dreadstar noted his suspicion that Z was Aknaton.

Syzygy acknowledged the strange mixture of magic and technology he had sensed in Z, and Dreadstar noted the possibility that Aknaton was calling himself Z -- for Zygotean -- to let him know that he was an enemy now.

Dreadstar further speculated that Z may be trying to interfere with their plans to end the Monarchy-Instrumentality war to spite him.

Having reviewed the tape on the Monarchy's military strengths and deployments Gregzor had passed to him, Oedi noted that Z had radically deployed the royal fleet to leave the Monarchy's defenses paper thin, especially around Jewelworld.

Seeking to confront Z and gather information, Dreadstar accompanied Oedi on his mission to Jewelworld to get an update from Gregzor; not intending to battle Z, Dreadstar countered Syzygy's plans to accompany him, instructing Syzygy and Willow to remain behind on their base on Plorexus, while Skeevo flew them there.

(Dreadstar I#8) - After Oedi received the cassette from Gregzor, Z surprised him, noting "Nice catch."

Swiftly kicking Z back and dropping the human and cyborg guards with his enhanced feline speed and reflexes, Oedi fled; however, as he vaulted the wall, Z -- who had anticipated his exit strategy -- shot him through the leg, arm, and side of the chest; Oedi hit the ground at his feet.z-8116-zygotean-ds9-unmasked-full-oblique-hand

(Dreadstar I#8 (fb) - BTS) - Intending to draw Dreadstar into a confrontation, Z explained to Oedi how he wanted him to reach Dreadstar with the tape and then to tell Dreadstar that he (Z) would be waiting at the palace for him.

(Dreadstar I#8 - BTS) - The wounded Oedi relayed the message to Dreadstar, who took him back to the ship to treat his wounds.

Reviewing the tape, Dreadstar learned of Z's strategically leaving Jewelworld vulnerable and shutting down half the planet's defense systems for overhauling, as well as of Z's meeting with the Lord Papal, indicating that Jewelworld was going to be invaded imminently.

Dreadstar resolved to warn Gregzor and kill Z.

(Dreadstar I#9) - Z observed remotely as Dreadstar fought his way past Gregzor's imperial cyborgs, mockingly noting to Gregzor how Dreadstar was fighting to kill, that the Monarchy would be crushed by day's end and that, with Gregzor's aid, Dreadstar would be one of the last casualties.

Z subsequently greeted Dreadstar in the royal palace, remaining silent as Dreadstar identified him as Aknaton, but he eventually replied that his goal was the destruction of the Monarchy and a painful death for Dreadstar as righteous vengeance. Noting that he had come too far and lost too much (with all that was his world being dead) to consider any further discussion, Z told Dreadstar that there was no room in this galaxy for the likes of either of them, and he punctuated this with a powerful energy blast.

Absorbing the energies via his sword of power, Dreadstar turned the blast back on Z, whose force field shrugged off the blast. Dreadstar dodged Z's next blast and knocked Z back with a swing of his sword, but as Z fired anew, Gregzor rushed in, ordering the fight to stop and exclaiming this all to be a terrible mistake.

As Dreadstar tried to protect Gregzor, the king dealt a series of unexpected blows to Dreadstar via his cyborg strength-enhanced form, stunning him so that Z could smash him unconscious against the wall with a final blast.

(Dreadstar I#9 (fb) - BTS) - Z had Dreadstar bound to a device that would release a high-voltage charge into his body whenever any pressure was applied to the structure.

(Dreadstar I#9 - BTS) - Syzygy and the others attempted to come to Vanth's rescue, but they found the region around Jewelworld filled with the Instrumentality's invasion force, and they were forced to warp away to avoid destruction. Hoping Vanth could survive and escape on his own, his allies returned to Plorexus.

(Dreadstar I#9) - When Dreadstar revived, Z discussed how he had lifted his mental domination over Gregzor to allow him to speak and to witness what was happening but otherwise immobilized him; and how the restraints would prevent Dreadstar's breaking free.

Noting as the Instrumentality began its assault on Jewelworld, Z mocked Dreadstar's helpless rage and told him he was going to pay for his bloody crimes and his stupidity. Proclaiming himself to be all that was dark and hateful but not the dead Aknaton, Z removed his helmet and blaster, allowing Dreadstar to realize he was a Zygotean.

Noting that he was a rare left-handed Zygotean, which was why he had ritually amputated his right arm, Z then related his history and his plots.

Wishing for Dreadstar to view the Monarchy's destruction, Z left him trapped in the device and set a nuclear bomb to detonate within the hour, while he (Z) would be safely outside Jewelworld's atmosphere, waiting to witness and relish Dreadstar's end.

(Dreadstar I#10 (fb) - BTS) - Z slaughtered all Monarchy agents he encountered as he made his way to the hangar.

(Dreadstar I#9 - BTS) - A ship shot down in the battle between the Instrumentality and Monarchy forces crashed into the palace royal, collapsing the ceiling/level above Dreadstar and Gregzor on them.firing projectiles

(Dreadstar I#10 - BTS) - The freed and recovered Dreadstar disabled the nuclear weapon and then promised the dying Gregzor to make Z pay for his treason.

Considering that with all the airfights that it would have been too dangerous to risk trying to fly, Dreadstar resolved that Z must still be in the palace. z-8116-zygotean-ds10-face-detail.jpg

Dreadstar followed the trail of dead Monarchy agents toward Z, taking and programming a jet pack en route.

(Dreadstar I#10) - Informed by cyborg guards that his ship was loaded, Z, who was apparently unaware of the ship crashing into the other side of the palace, noted with pleasure that he had 20 minutes to spare and that everything was going exactly as planned.

When the arriving Dreadstar noted, "Not quite everything." Z swiftly turned and blasted him, but Dreadstar absorbed the blast and turned it back on him.

Z fought back with projectiles that pierced Dreadstar's right shoulder and thigh and the left side of his abdomen. However, when Z swooped down to finish off Dreadstar, Vanth turned and smashed him back with his sword.

Minimally affected, Z mocked Dreadstar's frustration at being unable to penetrate his force field, but Dreadstar channeled energy through his sword to shatter a series of columns, causing the roof to collapse on Z.

With a powerful burst of energy, Z blasted free from the debris.

(Dreadstar I#10 - BTS) - In the Instrumentality invasion force's flagship, a soldier reported the strange scanner readings they were receiving from the royal palace, and the Lord Papal noted that that would be Z killing or being killed by Dreadstar.

While he was curious to see who would win the fight and reminded that there should be no interference in the battle, the Papal further ordered that a destroyer be stationed above the palace and as soon as the power readings dropped that troopers be sent in to terminate anyone they found inside.

(Dreadstar I#10) - Z and Dreadstar continued to battle fiercely, with neither able to gain an advantage until Dreadstar manipulated Z into position and launched the jet pack into Z's back at full speed.

Stunned by the impact, Z dropped to the ground, and Dreadstar relentlessly struck Z's force field with his sword until the field finally overloaded and shorted out. Dreadstar then stomped on and destroyed Z's hand weapon, disabling it.

Acknowledging his defeat, Z turned over on his chest and told Dreadstar to end it quickly.

However, Dreadstar told Z that his sword was too clean a death for him. z-8116-zygotean-ds10-eyeblasts

When Dreadstar reabsorbed the sword and instead grabbed a length of chain, Z realized that Dreadstar meant to brutally beat him, and he called on his personal reserves, blasting at Dreadstar with his eyebeams.

Telling Z he had no chance, Dreadstar dodged his blasts and eventually smashed Z in the face with the chain, knocking him down and stunning him.

Dreadstar then proceeded to brutally beat Z to death with the chain, leaving only a bloody mess behind.z-8116-zygotean-ds10-chain

(Dreadstar I#10 - BTS) - Arriving Instrumentality forces fled in terror upon encountering the sword-wielding Dreadstar in the palace.

(Dreadstar I#10 (fb) - BTS) - Dreadstar apparently escaped Jewelworld in a "troop ship" despite the Instrumentality presence.

Comments: Created by Jim Starlin under the Epic imprint.

Dreadstar was a licensed character/title created by Jim Starlin starting way back with the Metamorphosis Odyssey in Epic Illustrated#1 in the Spring of 1980. The Metamorphosis Odyssey started around the modern era and affected Earth, but then swiftly destroyed the entire Milky Way galaxy and then moved on like a million years in the future. Dreadstar eventually got his own series under the Epic imprint, but Starlin later took the whole shebang over to First Comics. And in 1994, it was published under the imprint of Bravura, a creator-owned division of Malibu comics. He appeared sometime later in issues #5-7 of the Breed III series. And, there's talk of a Dreadstar television show.
Still that earlier Marvel connection allows me to place this reality in the fringes of the Marvel Megaverse.
Peter David took over the writing around issue#31 or so, but Starlin remained the owner. At any rate, from start to finish, it is the best series I've ever read, period! I'd love to see it continued, by Starlin, David, or both!

I get frustrated with comics allowing murderous killers to be arrested and then escape to kill again. Reading this story back in 1984, it was so refreshing to Dreadstar deliver Z his just desserts.

At least twice Z squandered the opportunity to execute a helpless Dreadstar.
