urchin-kunlun-c5-mindscape-rubyhostPowers/Abilities: The Urchin is a magically-enhanced fungal organism that is consumed by the desire to infect and feed on others. Although demonstrating only very simple thought processes, such as blame or anger/protectiveness, it can speak with the voice and some of the thoughts of those it has absorbed, allowing it to distract/disarm those upon which it intends to feed.

The Urchin typically infects others on contact, being absorbed through pores in the skin and in a matter of seconds spreading its fungal spores into a victim's body and causing the victim to collapse, possibly with a chance to utter a few words before being left in a virtually comatose state. Even superhumanly durable beings like Cage or fiery beings such as the Human Torch (although he's supposed to be made of plasma in his fiery form). However, beings lacking conventional skin structure, such as the rocky Thing, are highly resistant to such infection.

The minds of those the Urchin infects are absorbed into the collective mind of the Urchin, and the Urchin grows in power (and size, if the victim is sufficiently powerful) from each person it infects. After infecting a being with superhuman powers, the Urchin can manifest those abilities as well. After absorbing Mr. Fantastic, it could stretch; after absorbing the Human Torch, it could generate fiery blasts; after absorbing the Invisible Woman, it could turn invisible. It's use of such powers were relatively basic, enabling it to alter its form or to attack others.

As the Urchin absorbs more and more power/minds, it can animate those it had infected, causing them to fight for its cause. Further, those infected beings can infect others, which are added to the Urchin's collective consciousness.

Within the Urchin's mindscape, its bonding and control to its pawns manifested as tendrils; severing these tendrils freed the infected host from the Urchin's control.

Once infected, the Urchin's victims were progressively consumed by the fungus that infiltrated their bodies. Both powerful mystics such as Dr. Strange and technological super-geniuses such as Tony Stark feared attempted to remove the fungus might prove fatal to the victims. The K'un-Lun host's body had been virtually consumed after week's possesion when a punch from the Thing slew it. A one week survival timetable was established based on this, although it may well have been different for superhuman beings. However, the normal human Ruby was infected for six days and served as the host, but once the Urchin's influence was removed, she returned to normal.

Reed noted it to be a micro-fungus to be similar to ophiocordyceps unilateralis, aspergillus niger or stachybotrys chartarum, but now quite. The presenting signs lined up with long-term exposure to high levels of mycotoxins.

History:urchin-kunlun-c1-victims.jpg

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS / Contagion#2 (fb) - BTS) <"Thousands of years" ago> - The fungal organism that became known as the Urchin was a living weapon created by the plant-beings known as the H'ylthri to wipe out the humanoids as they first settled in K'un-Lun. However, the fungus turned on the H'ylthri, nearly wiping out their population. Unable to destroy the entity, the H'ylthri contained/entombed it.

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - Approximately 2 weeks before the main story, three K'un-Lun monks/workers/whatever discovered a staircase beneath the temple floor that was not in any of their records. They discovered labyrinth-like catacombs underneath the building.

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - The monks found a room and apparently opened a chest containing what was later identified as the Urchin, which spread out over them, either killing or incapacitating two of the men and taking the third as a host, which escaped to Earth. The room was barricaded in, either by the monks before their incapacitation or by the escaping host.

(Contagion#5 (fb) - BTS) - Having been locked away for so long, it was very hungry.

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - The fungal organism and its host traveled to Earth, taking up residence in old subway tunnels near New York's Yancy Street (see comments).

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - Other monks searched the tunnels, broke into the barricaded room, and found the two corpses covered in a green fungus-like material.

(Contagion#1 (fb)) - A monk revealed their findings to K'un-Lun's Yu-Ti/ruler, Sparrow.

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - A number of kids -- either members of the Yancy Street Gang or just friends of Anton and Ruby -- went missing while exploring old subway tunnels, hoping to sell whatever they found to collectors. urchin-kunlun-c1-kunlun-stretch

The host touched the youths, infecting them as well.

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - Yancy Street Gang members Ruby and Anton went looking for them in the old subway tunnels, and they were suddenly confronted by the host, covered in green fungus-like material, speaking a foreign language. The host grabbed Ruby, and Anton lost sight of them before fleeing in a panic.

    Ruby was infected.

(Contagion#1 (fb) - BTS) - The Mole Man and a number of Moloid Subterraneans also infected.

(Contagion#1) - Anton convinced the Thing to accompany him into the subways to help Ruby, and they found her clearly infected. She charged the Thing but collapsed before he touched her. The Thing wrapped Ruby in Anton's jacket in case the "mold" was contagious and began to carry her to the hospital, but he had to hand her off to Anton to tell him to flee as a number of infected Moloids appeared. As the Moloids attacked, Ben contacted his teammate Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) for back-up, after which the Mole Man arrived and attacked him as well. urchin-kunlun-c1-kunlun-fireblast

The Fantastic Four arrived soon after, wearing gas masks, after which the K'un-Lun host showed up, asking for help. Ignoring Sue's words of caution, Reed sought to help the man and moved closer, evaluating the micro-fungus and offering to take the man to his lab, but the host touched his face and infected him as well. When the Torch challenged the host, it extended a tendril to infect him as well and then drove back the Thing with a fiery blast. Speaking with Reed's voice, the host distracted Sue and extended tendrils into the ground and then up under her force field to infect her as well. Knocking back the Thing again, the host turned invisible and escaped.

(Contagion#2 (fb) - BTS) - The host fled out onto Yancy Street, touching, infecting, and incapacitating the people it encountered.

(Contagion#1 - BTS) - Sparrow came to Earth and confronted Iron Fist, telling him his entire world was about to be destroyed.

(Contagion#2 (fb) - BTS) - At some point, Sparrow identified the host as the Urchin.

(Contagion#2) - As Sparrow showed Iron Fist a number of victims lying on Yancy Street, she identified them as the result of the Urchin. The Thing then arrived, carrying his infected teammates, and after Sparrow revealed what little they knew and that they had no idea how to stop the Urchin, the Thing decided to take his teammates to Dr. Strange. As paramedics arrived, Iron Fist advised them to don Hazmat (Hazardous Materials) suits.

After Anton delivered Ruby to the McCarthy Medical Institute, an infected lesion was seen on his neck.urchin-kunlun-c2-giant

As Iron Fist called Luke Cage for back-up, Dr. Strange examined the other three Fantastic Four members, noting the organism to be ancient and to have spread through their bodies, infiltrating their organs as if it was using them for a food source; he was concerned that trying to remove the organism might kill them. He further stated that while the fungus had been magically supercharged, the energies did not line up with any K'un-Lun mysticism he had seen. While the fungus forced their bodies to vomit out some of its material in hopes of spreading through the air, Strange resolved to check out the organism's source and instructed Ben to take him to where he had encountered the Urchin.

(Contagion#2) - While the Emergency Medical Technicians and/or police blocked off the area around the subway, the Urchin, again pleading for help, caught an EMT offguard as it rushed out of the subway, slashing his throat and fleeing down the streets. Hearing the screams, Sparrow, Cage, and Iron Fist rushed to investigate, during which time Sparrow revealed the fungus' origins and noted that they needed to contain the Urchin.

(Contagion#2 (fb) - BTS) - The Urchin controlled a number of the EMTs, forcing them to battle the Sparrow, Cage, and Iron Fist

(Contagion#2 - BTS) - Dr. Strange contacted the Avengers, advising that they stay away at least initially, to avoid allowing the Urchin to gain any or all of their power sets; however, he noted he would send them samples once he found "patient zero" so that they and others could analyze them. Iron Man used some of his satellites to try to identify the creatures' heat signature to track its movements.

(Contagion#2) - Strange and the Thing soon arrived on the site of the heroes battling the Urchin and its pawns, and Strange conjured a mystic barrier to keep the Urchin contained. Cloak and Dagger then joined the struggle, with Dagger wounding the Urchin with light knives and then Cloak contained the Urchin within the Dark(force) Dimension he accessed. However, Cloak was unable to keep the Urchin, and it burst free, swiftly infecting Cage, Dagger, and Strange, easily passing through the protection spell Strange was conjuring. Adopting these heroes' abilities, the Urchin grew monstrously.

(Contagion#3) - Within the McCarthy Medical Institute, the fungus spread from Ruby throughout the building.

On Yancy Street, Iron Fist, Sparrow, and the Thing battled the Urchin but as it used Reed and Sue's voices, the Thing became enrgaged and punched the Orphan. With the fungus having burnt out its form, the K'un-Lun host perished, causing the Thing to fear that he had killed all of those who had been absorbed into the Urchin. After Ben reported this to the Avengers, Iron Man resolved to meet with him at Dr. Strange's sanctum sanctorum and obtain some samples for testing. Iron Man speculated that those infected by the Urchin could survive for seven days.

However, as he returned to Avengers Mountain in the North Pole, he was apparently unaware that he harbored some of the fungal tissue on his armor's exterior.

Following the death of the previous host, the fungus adopted Ruby as its new host, and she revived and exited her quarantined room, and it soon began rampaging anew in Penn Station, where it battled the Wrecking Crew (Bulldozer, Piledriver, Thunderball, Wrecker) while infecting several members of the NYPD.

Sparrow took Jessica Jones and the young Iron Fist Pei to see the comatose Cage, and they were soon joined by Black Tarantula, Elektra, Moon Knight, Punisher, and White Tiger. Moon Knight informed them that, despite its apparent death, the Urchin was in Penn Station, battling the Wrecking Crew.

Meanwhile, watching over Dani Cage, Iron Fist took her to see Senor Magico, who brought in his allies in the League of International Magic Practitioners (Bob Jennings, Mister Je-Je, Nana Marefa, Night Witch, Sorcha) to form a mystic field to contain the Urchin.urchin-kunlun-c3-ruby-awakens

(Contagion#4) - As the Urchin infected Bulldozer, Thunderball, and the Wrecker, the heroes -- Black Tarantula, Elektra, Jessica Jones, Moon Knight, Pei, Punisher, the Thing, and the White Tiger, joined by Senor Magical -- arrrived. However, Senor Magico was knocked out when the Urchin smashed the Thing back into him, and his incapacitation allowed Elektra, Black Tarantula, and White Tiger to be infected/incapacitated as well. Realizing the heroes' vulnerability, the Punisher and Moon Knight held off the Urchin while allowing the others to grab Magico and flee.

The next day (the second day with Ruby as the host), Magico met with the rest of the League; as they began to show fatigue, Magico replaced Jeninngs, giving him a break.

On the third day, in Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, Iron Fist futilely tried to use his chi to help the incapacitated Fantastic Four members, and Magico asked him to stop, as it wouldn't work and was also messing with his readings. Magico subsequently confirmed that the infecteds' minds were missing from their bodies, presumably absorbed into the Urchin.

By the fourth day, the Urchin fungus -- brought there by Iron Man -- had incapacitated the rest of the Avengers.

On the fifth day, as the heroes searched the city, the Punisher located the Urchin, and he was infected.

On the sixth day, Magico noted that he had discovered that the Urchin left behind faint dust-like trails, which flowed from those infected; believing that this was how the Urchin drew its power from those infected, Magico recommended they follow the trails to the Urchin.

Moon Knight then recommended that they allow the Urchin to infect him, as his experience with dissociative identity disorder would likely allow him to find and free the other minds trapped inside the Urchin. While the others were not convinced this would work, they had no better plans. After Mister Je-Ju and then another of the League of International Magic Practitioners collapsed from exhaustion and the mystic wall containing the Urchin fell, the other heroes agreed to the plan.

The Urchin surprised the heroes by animating and sending the infected superhumans against them, and Sparrow suspected that it was becoming more powerful the more it spread and grew.

(Contagion#5) - Moon Knight confronted the Urchin, allowing it to infect him. Within the Urchin's mindscape, Moon Knight broke free, encountering the mental essence of Elektra, which urged him to follow "her trail" before attacking him. Fighting her off, Moon Knight vowed to come back for her, unless he died, of course.

Back on Earth, Pei was overwhelmed and infected by a number of infected/controlled heroes, and Senor Magico could only determine that Moon Knight's connection to the Urchin was different from the others and that they had to protect his form.

(Contagion#5 (fb) - BTS) - Pei's infected form joined the ranks of those fighting the non-controlled heroes.urchin-kunlun-c5-hostless

(Contagion#5) - Within the Urchin's mindscape, Moon Knight severed the tendrils from the Urchin affecting Pei, freeing her mind from its influence as well. After her physical form stopped fighting, Magico sensed that the trail leading from her to the Urchin had been interrupted. Her mental self sent Moon Knight to find the Urchin's brain while she fought off its tendrils.

Confronting Ruby's mental form/the Urchin's central host, Moon Knight asked what the Urchin wanted. As the Urchin's tendrils attacked Moon Knight, Ruby begged for help, noting that it was eating her alive and that all that the Urchin knew how to do was to consume until there was nothing left for so long; having been locked away for so long, it was very hungry.

As Ruby's mental self cried out in pain, the forms of Reed Richards, Dr. Strange, and Cage briefly emerged, urging Moon Knight to free those trapped there by severing the tendrils and take away its strength. The Urchin then rallied its forces and wrapped Moon Knight in tendrils, overwhelming him.

(Contagion#5 (fb) - BTS) - Due to their shared consciousness, Pei and those still trapped could hear Moon Knight's conversation with the Urchin. Pei freed Black Tarantula, Cage, Dr. Strange, Elektra, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mole Man, Moloids, Punisher, Reed Richards, Thunderball, and White Tiger, at least.

(Contagion#5) - Pei rescued Moon Knight and pulled him out from within the Urchin's tendrils. As the Urchin launched itself and the heroes' mental forms, Ruby noted that they had weakened it and begged them to help her. As Urchin yelled at Moon Knight, "You did this!" he severed the Urchin's connection to Ruby, freeing her as well.

As all of the heroes' minds returned to their bodies and they revived, Magico noted that he had broken its hold and that the Urchin was weakened after having been separated its host. Moon Knight charged it, but its still large and powerful form threatened to smash him before the Invisible Woman contained it within a force field.

(Contagion#5 (fb) - BTS) - Sue transported the Urchin via her forcefield to the Fantastic Four's base on 4 Yancy Street, where Reed contained it within a glass globe reinforced by Vibranium.

(Contagion#5 (fb) - BTS) - Reed developed a serum to protect against any similar fungi assaults. urchin-kunlun-c5-contained

(Contagion#5) - Standing around the entrapped Urchin, Reed explained to the others how he theorized that it would only grow to the size of its environment; this was why the sarcophagus in K'un-Lun was able to control if for so long.

Reed further noted that the organism was a fungus similar to ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the so-called zombie-ant fungus; it was designed to spread, and that infusing it with magic to use as a weapon had resulted in its current nature and power.

(Contagion#5 - BTS) - Seeking to avoid some horror movie-style ending, the Thing checked his cat, Buddy, to make sure there weren't any Urchin fungal plaques hidden on his body.

Comments: Created by Ed Brisson and Roge Antonio.

Interesting coincidence that the Contagion series came out around the time that COVID-19 became prominent...

It stretches the realm of credibility for Iron Man to have taken off his helmet while examining infected patients, and it's even harder to believe he wouldn't have used radiation and/or heat to sterilize his armor, and that he wouldn't have had someone knowledgeable enough, like the Black Panther (T'Challa), to have examined him for safety before entering Avengers Mansion.

Ruby (and Anton) can get their own profiles someday.

This profile was completed 12/20/2021, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 20th anniversary 's celebratory event.

Note: This being was described as the Urchin, which was typically used to refer to the fungus or the fungus and its host. Given this man's hair and lack of robe, he was presumably not the K'un-Lun host but just another victim the Urchin was able to animate.
