History:
(
Amazing Adult Fantasy#8/5 (fb) - BTS) - An alien of an unrevealed species that belonged to the Supreme Council of Civilized Planets, the ambassador was chosen to visit Earth because humanity were on the verge of space travel, and extend the gift of friendship. Unable to speak any human languages, it carried a note written in English offering to share the council's treasured knowledge, including the secrets of long life, happiness, and perfect health, and how to abolish crime, poverty and war.

(Amazing Adult Fantasy#8/5 - BTS) -The ambassador's ship was spotted as it flew slowly over a major American city (likely NYC, but not explicitly named), then gently came to rest in the heart of the city. The ambassador waited for humans to gather to greet it, and outside its vessel crowds of bystanders joined TV news crews and National Guard units. As tension mounted the longer they were kept waiting, some in the crowd loudly advocated the guard should shoot at the ship or throw a bomb to force the visitors to exit their vessel.

(Amazing Adult Fantasy#8/5) - Finally the ambassador opened the natch and lowered a ramp to come out and meet humanity, but upon seeing its alien visage many in the crowd reacted in horror, declaring it a monster and shouting at the guard to shoot and kill it. Though the guard maintained their cool, some in the mob began throwing rocks and bottles, causing the ambassador to pull back in shock. Then a shot rang out, and though it was unclear where it had come from, or even if it had been aimed at the ambassador, the alien reacted in fear, dropping the note intended to welcome humanity, and hastily withdrew back into its ship, with the crowd cheering as the vessel rose into the air and flew away.

(Amazing Adult Fantasy#8/5 - BTS) - A TV news reporter who had witnessed the crowd's intolerant reaction with growing dismay went over and picked up the ambassador's note. Saddened to see what mankind had cost itself thanks to the belligerent way they had greeted a friendly alien visitor, he read the note out loud for both the crowd on the scene and the viewers watching on his newsfeed. As they heard what the ambassador's true intentions had been, one by one the crowd began to hang their heads in shame. Finishing the note, the reporter declared that everyone had been right when they said that there had been monsters on Earth today, because "Heaven help us...we are the monsters!"

Comments: Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

The main image seems to show the alien standing a little over twice the height of nearby humans, but within the story it seems closer to three times their height (see left).

Could this story be taking place on Earth-616, the mainstream Marvel Earth? Thanks to its stand alone nature, I don't see any reason why not. Sure, someone says this is mankind's first encounter with an alien race, but we've been shown that lots of incursions are overlooked by the general public, or are written off by anyone not physically present as hoaxes.

If it does take place on Earth-616, there's no reason it couldn't take place around the time it was published, as the lack of ongoing characters means it doesn't need to be tied to the sliding timeline that other stories use to prevent major characters growing excessively old.

The only name used in the story is that of the reporter's cameraman, and he's only called Joe. The closest we get for the alien is either him being called "the monster" (an overly common, and in this case utterly inaccurate, descriptor) or the ambassador.

While I get that they might not be able to send an ambassador who looked less monstrous to humanity, I've got to question one who couldn't speak. I would think that if the Supreme Council of Civilized Planets had monitored Earth closely enough to know they were on the brink of space travel and to have learned English so they could write mankind a note, then even if the ambassador itself was physically unable to vocalize the noises required it could have been equipped with some kind of translator, or even just a recorded message to playback.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The "monster" ambassador has no known connections to:

The ambassador's saucer

The ambassador's ship was a large roughly saucer shaped vessel. Using the ambassador itself for a very rough scale estimate, it looked to be perhaps 90 feet in diameter, and around 30 feet high.
