History:
(Weirdworld I#1 (fb) - BTS) - In the composite realm of Weirdworld, as part of Battleworld, a group of underwater apes called the Lords of Apelantis, wearing helmets to allow them to breathe, settled in the bottom of a lake, and they learned to use fish on lines in the sky to attract prey.

(Weirdworld I#2 (fb) - BTS) - The apes captured many barbarians and others and kept them in cells until they could arrange to sell them. They also captured the crystal warrior Warbow, who attempted escape a dozen times but was always recaptured.

(Weirdworld I#1) - The apes tossed a fishing line to ensnare a dragon, soon pulling it under the water and into a net, not realizing the dragon had a rider, Arkon.

(Weirdworld I#2 (fb) - BTS) - In their underwater city of Apelantis, the water-apes stripped Arkon of his weapons and threw him in a cell where he could breathe oxygen. They traded the dragon to the Queen of Weirdworld, Morgan le Fey.

(Weirdworld I#2) - Arkon and Warbow soon broke out, then fought their way to the surface, killing many apes along the way.

(Black Knight III#3 (fb) - BTS) - After Battleworld was destroyed, Weirdworld was moved to Reality-616, where the society of Apelantis continued to exist under the surface in this new world.

(Black Knight III#3 (fb) ) - Black Knight and his aids, Alkyra Thash and Bolten Dinn, met with delegates from Apelantis, the Toad Men, the Giants, and the Amazons, and they formed a coalition to stand against the Avengers, who Black Knight warned would attack Weirdworld soon.

(Black Knight III#2) - The Apelanteans stood with their allies against the Avengers Unity Squad.

(Black Knight III#3) - The Avengers Unity Squad spoke to the Apelanteans and the others, stating that they were only there to arrest the Black Knight and that they had no intentions of conquering Weirdworld. Black Knight fought back, but the Avengers soon defeated them.

Comments: Created by Jason Aaron and Michael Del Mundo.

These characters have been called Underwater Apes and Water-Apes, but they are most consistently referred to as residents of Apelantis, thus Apelanteans. I almost wonder if they came from that dimension of monkey variants.
