(Astonishing Tales#27 - BTS) - Luther Manning helped Richard learn to talk.

Comments: Created by Rich Buckler, Doug Moench, and Pablo Marcos.

Lamenting the life he had lost, Deathlok the Demolisher of Reality-7484 imagined what it would have been like if he had been able to raise his son. Specifically, Deathlok thinks "if it weren't for Ryker..."

We don't know the exact circumstances, but I would imagine that Luther Manning of Earth-74147 was not mortally wounded during war games and thus was not declared dead and later transformed into Deathlok. As a result, he apparently remained human and was present to raise his son.

We only see Luther's hand in one image and his arm and leg in another, but he is grossly human.

Luther's son's name, Richard, was not revealed in this story (either for Deathlok's son in Earth-7484 or Luther's son in Earth-74147). I think it was first used in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe I#3: Deathlok entry.

One would presume that Luther's wife and the child's mother is Janice; however, she is not shown or mentioned in the two panels seen of this reality.

We don't know for sure if Simon Ryker was around in this story. Maybe he was killed long before he would have gotten involved with Luther...maybe he was never born. Or maybe someone else became Deathlok. Maybe it was Mike Travers.

In Reality-616, Nth Command's Operation Purge was thwarted by Captain America and the time-traveling Deathlok-7484, diverging that reality from -616. Earth-616's Luther Manning was not transformed into Deathlok by Ryker, but was later transformed into Deathlok by Timestream. Without further information, I'm considering Realty-74147 to be separate from Reality-616.
