History:

(Werewolf by Night II#6 (fb) ) - Len & Phil were investigating the serial murders on the East Side that had left the NYPD baffled.

(Werewolf by Night II#6) - Len & Phil were working at the crimescene of another serial killer victim and watched the psychic Mariana investigate the corpse. Phil realized the mayor was mad at them for not finding a suspect. Len calmed him down because the murderer gave them nothing to go on because there was no pattern in the murders and he never contacted the police. Phil commented on the fact that all victims' throat were torn out and jokingly called Mariana "Gypsy Rose" when she was done. Len wanted her to tell him his future and Mariana told them that she saw death. Len & Phil didn't take her comment serious at all.

(Strange Tales IV#1/2) - At the precinct O'Reilly mocked Len & Phil regarding the psychic's investigation making a big show out of it, which entertained everyone except Len & Phi. Len got particularly aggravated because they still had nothing to go on to find the serial killer and had to wait until he hit again. When a call came in that another victim was found in the sewer system near the Lower East Side docks Len & Phil left to investigate and O'Reilly quietly quit his one man show.

At the docks Len & Phil questioned the the homeless people including Eloise, who told them that a monster lived on the dark side of the docks and that the only one going there was Lump, who had gone missing and was probably dead or something. Phil considered the lead another dead end, but Len felt that the murderer was close and that at least they had a lead now.

(Strange Tales IV#2/2) - Len & Phil discovered Lump's broken wagon on the dark side of the docks and a trail of blood leading down into the sewer system. Len was sure that whatever the psychic Mariana saw was close. Phil mocked him and told Len that they just had another missing person and a pool of blood and no clue where to go next. Len told him that they had to go down into the sewer system.

They went to Father Adobe's church and questioned him after joking around about religion a bit. Adobe couldn't tell them anything and told them to ask Jack Russell if they wanted to know if somebody was living down in the sewer system.

They next went to Jack's apartment, but only encountered his girlfriend Roxanna, who had just returned from vacation and didn't know where Jack was at the moment.

Following this they went into the sewer system when they heard shots (a whole squad killed by the Children of the Night). They headed toward the source of the shots and encountered the vampire Brother Steven standing over the corpses of the slain squad. He told them that he was waiting for a few good men like them.

(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z HC#13 - Werewolf) - Len & Phil eventually tracked down Werewolf, but he escaped them when they were slain by the Cult of the Third Moon.

Comments: Created by Paul Jenkins (writer) & Leonardo Manco (artist).

Their last names were seen on a door in Strange Tales IV#1/2 and mentioned in the same story.

As Snood pointed out to me Jenkins revealed years the ago the plans he had for the Werewolf by Night series (though the info got lost after a few computer changes). The death of Len & Phil revealed in the handbooks was presumably part of this.
