Its influence radius grows with the amount of followers under the Kraken's control. The Kraken was also able to create a physical extension body (around 35' tall) with at least class 75 strength, which is strong enough to bite through steel cables. The extension body lured followers closer to the Kraken's influence area, presumably to make it easier for the Kraken to keep followers under control, and protected its followers from outside attacks/interference.

History:

(Namora II#1 (fb) - BTS) - Millennia ago the Kraken was worshipped by many as a sea-god. With all worshippers gone the Kraken grew weak and went to sleep in a cave somewhere in the Barents Sea.

(Namora II#1 (fb) - BTS) - At some point Atlantean colonists in search for an old Atlantean outpost came near the area where the Kraken was sleeping. They fell under the Kraken's influence, who made the colonists grow weak. In their weakened state several young Atlanteans got caught in a trawler's steel cable net. The Kraken's extension body appeared out of nowhere and bit through the net to free them. Afterward the extension body led the colonists to the fertile area above his sleeping place. The Atlanteans' strength got restored by a mineral vent that led to the cave where the true Kraken slept in. Becoming acclimated to the area the Atlantean colonists where unable to leave the area again without growing weak againm, unaware it was all due to the Kraken's influence, whose slaves they had become.

With its first followers in millennia under its control the Kraken hoped to pull more followers into its area of influence because the more followers it possessed the greater the Kraken's sphere of influence grew until it one day could influence even surface dwellers. With enough followers the Kraken would be able to awake and once more to dominate the oceans.

(Namora II#1) - When a whale led Namora to the Atlantean colony controlled by the Kraken the Kraken's extension body attacked her. Two children asked to Kraken to cease its attacks because Namora was their princess. Moments later more Atlantean colonists arrived to defend the Kraken's actions because it had probably not recognized Namora as a fellow Atlantean. Namora was confused that the creature was actually the colonists' protector and wanted to know more. Over a meal the colony's historian and physician explained that the Kraken had saved the colonists and led them to this area, but due to unknown reasons the colonists where unable to leave again because whenever they tried they grew weak again.

The colony leaders showed Namora the mineral vent that had restored their strength when they arrived and when she heard music she swam down the vent to the cave where the Kraken was sleeping. The Kraken tried to influence Namora by creating an illusion of her deceased daughter Namorita, but Namora could tell that she was influenced by another being and dove further down into the cave after rejecting the illusion. She sensed the Kraken all around her telepathically and asked why the creature was holding her people there. When she saw the Titan's true form up close she could feel its memories and realized that it was dreaming of its past and creating a sphere of influence to gain new followers until it was strong enough to awake and rule over the oceans again. Swimming back up to the colonists she told them the truth about the Kraken, but the Kraken's extension body, which was serving the sleeping Titan's will to lure in new followers, attacked Namora immediately. With Namora in the extension body's grasp she explaining to the colonists that the Kraken needed them and had enslaved them by telepathically influencing them to grow weak whenever they tried to leave. Believing her the colonists attacked the Kraken's extension body, but their spears were unable to pierce its skin. Because Namora was unable to match the extension body's strength under water she dragged him out of the ocean. Unable to breath outside the water the Kraken was no match for Namora, who slew the sleeping Titan's extension body by ripping out its throat.

(Namora II#1 - BTS) - With the extension body apparently dead the sleeping Titan was unable to keep the Atlantean colonists under its influence and the colonists followed Namora to their new home Oceanus. Namora wondered how long it would take the Kraken to release a new aspect of itself.

Comments: Created by Jeff Parker (writer) & Sara Pichelli (artist).

Wouldn't it be a nice coincident if the Titan in this story was Oceanus while at the same time Namora asked the Atlanteans enslaved by the Titan to move to a new settlement known as Oceanus?

Despite the main image showing the extension body it can be assumed that the actual Kraken looks the same as its extension body....just bigger, a bit less colorful and far more dangerous.
