Powers/Abilities: Surgeon has the mutant ability to transform living beings, shifting them into a form more suited to whatever he feels is their most ideal condition. Despite his talents, Surgeon lacked vision and was content with others, like the Toad, doing the thinking for him. He seemed to have mildly sadistic tendencies and a preference for experimenting on metamorphs. Surgeon could enhance humans, mutants and wildlife, using technology of unknown origin to create an army of flesh eating amphibians that served Toad. Surgeon often was dressed as an actual surgeon and wielded a scalpel.

History:

(Generation X#19 (fb) - BTS) - At some unrevealed point, Emma Frost encountered the mutant calling himself Surgeon. Feeling sorry for the man's plight, Emma allowed him to live on her estate located in the wilds of Northern Ontario which she'd intended as a mutant sanctuary. The only other mutant living there was the Toad (Mortimer Toynbee) who befriended the somewhat simpleminded Surgeon.

(Generation X#18 - BTS) - Dreaming dreams of grandeur, Toad had Surgeon use his powers to alter an unspecified number of mutants in an unrevealed way. He also ordered him to create an army out of the local wildlife, focussing on amphibians who Surgeon outfitted with mind altering technology that placed the fauna under Toynbee's command. As an added effect, the critters also developed carnivorous tendencies. When Emma Frost, acting on instinct to protect her students from Onslaught, arrived at the estate Toad decided to make his move.

(Generation X#19 - BTS) - Toad ordered his army of amphibians to gnaw down the tree the mind controlled Generation X members were sitting in, causing it to crash down on the mansion. Stunned and dazed, they had no idea what to do as Toad and Surgeon made their move.

(Generation X#19) - Surgeon was pleased when Toad handed him the strung out Generation X members for experimentation, excited about the opportunities they presented him. He showed a sincere interest in the metamorph Husk, expressing a desire to start with her first. However, Emma Frost showed up to set Toad and Surgeon straight, chiding them both to such a degree they were already retreating even as Banshee and Alpha Flight's Sasquatch arrived.

Comments: Created by Scott Lobdell (writer), Chris Bachalo (pencils), Mark Buckingham (inks).

One can't help but wonder if Lobdell had intended to use the Morlock Masque in this story, after all his powers mirrored those of Surgeon's in quite a few ways. Having him turn out to be a throwaway character coming out of nowhere and, after less than three panels, disappearing into that same nothingness seems a bit of a waste. If you can turn toads into flesh (or tree) eating menaces, you deserve at least an additional cameo or two.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Surgeon has no known connections to

Surgeon's Carnivorous Amphibians

Acting on orders from Toad (Mortimer Toynbee), Surgeon captured a number of toads and other amphibians from the local woods. He used his powers and unrevealed technology to turn the benign, herbivorous swamp creatures into vicious, flesh hungry semi-cyborgs outfitted with control arrays that allowed Toad to give them orders. The enhanced amphibians spied on Generation X while they were brought to the estate by Emma Frost and joined forces to chew down a tree that Husk, Synch, Jubilee and M were sitting in, causing it to crash on the house right where Toad and Surgeon were waiting for them.
