History

(Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z HC Vol. 2 (Corps entry) - BTS) - Captain Prydain of Earth-7580 was a member of the Corps.

(New Excalibur#18 (fb)) - When the extradimensional warlords who had controlled Earth-70518 were confronted by Albion of that Earth, they attempted to flee via their Dimensional Doorway. Once it was activated, it located Earth-7580 and the doorway opened but before the warlords could flee, Captain Prydain of Earth-7580 emerged from the portal via his own Dimensional Doorway. Suspecting that the warlords had controlled Earth-70518 for generations, Captain Prydain dragged them along until he saw Albion preparing to kill an enemy combatant. Despite orders from Prydain to drop the enemy, Albion savagely decapitated him, prompting Captain Prydain to attack. Shocked to see a face he thought to be Brian Braddock when he punched Albion's mask off, Captain Prydain was defeated by Albion and placed in cuffs. Albion then opened the portal to Earth-7580 to see what was on the other side and ventured into that reality with Prydain in tow. Back on his home Earth, Captain Prydain apologized for thinking Albion an enemy and commented how Albion was the only one he had ever heard of who chose the Sword over the Amulet when faced with Roma and Merlyn. He then explained that he had made a mistake in attacking Albion, to which Albion agreed. Albion then decapitated Captain Prydain, commenting that Prydain had now paid for his mistake. Albion then announced that he and his comrades would take Earth-7580 as their own, plotting to strip Roma of her Captains and Brian Braddock.

In his first and only appearance, Captain Prydain was not identified. It was not until the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z HC Vol. 2 (2008) that he was given the codename of Captain Prydain and the real name of Lloyd Thomas.

Prydain is the Welsh name for Britain, dating back to medieval times. This would suggest that the British Isles of Earth-7580 were dominated by Wales, rather than England, and that the island of Britain might well be the island of Prydain in that reality. Since Captain Prydain's costume includes an identical color scheme and similar layout to the Union Flag, it is still likely that England, Wales, Scotland and perhaps Ireland (part or all) formed a united kingdom as they did in our world.

Captain Prydain's real name, Lloyd Thomas, is a homage to the writer Lloyd Alexander, author of the fantasy series The Chronicles of Prydain, and a nod to famous Welshmen Gareth Thomas, both an actor (incl. in Blake's 7, a British sci-fi TV series that was also licensed by Marvel in the UK) and a rugby player who share that latter name.
