(The Thing I#27) – Richie "the Champ" Champoulion tried out for the vacant spot on the Thunderiders roster. He did a few stunts and showed off for the team in order to impress them. He coolly shot down Ben Grimm’s offer to go drinking, and looked on smugly as the former Fantastic Four member nearly wiped out while driving. Waiting outside the arena, Richie was approached by Wolf, who mockingly told him of the group’s decision to hire Grimm instead of him. Richie left in a rage.
Later, after Grimm had been voted in, he was attacked by the Marauder. A brief but violent struggle happened in the parking lot, but Grimm managed to overcome and knock out the dark rider. Seeing Champoulion’s face under the smashed mask shocked everyone.
Comments: Created by Mike Carlin (script), Ron Wilson (pencils) and Paul Ryan (inks).
They never mention him again, so it’s possible he was arrested for the damage caused.
Despite Wolf arguing for him to join, it’s Wolf who teases him. Did he suddenly change his mind?
At the end, Honcho suggests the link can attract anyone, with no mention of mutants or Project New Genesis. A sudden retcon?
