    formerly Atlantean military

Powers/Abilities: Proteus, using a mystic necklace, gained the ability to turn into any number of shapes, from humanoid shapes to elemental ones.  While in these various shapes, the necklace could still be seen.  Proteus seemed to gain the powers of whatever shape he mimicked.  The boundaries of his power have not been explored.

History: (Sub-Mariner II#2 (fb)) - The man who would become Proteus lived in Atlantis's poverty-stricken outer realm.  At some point he and others formed a rebellion, and Proteus became a rebel leader.

(Sub-Mariner II#4 (fb)) - Proteus, and other rebel leaders, made contact with Jacqueline Trufaut, a surface woman who had discovered mystic artifacts that would empower their users.  Trufaut sought revenge on Namor, and offered to empower the rebel leaders in their cause.  She gave Proteus a mystic necklace that would allow him to change his shape at will.  Proteus was patterned after Proteus, the son of Neptune.  Trufaut also empowered Dragonrider and the Mad Twins.

(Sub-Mariner II#2 (fb)) - Proteus, or his forces, murdered the investigating Atlantean army captain, Lord Jakka, and took the rest of his soldiers captive.  Proteus worked out a plan with Trufaut to set a trap for Namor.

(Sub-Mariner II#2) - Proteus, posing as Lord Jakka, returned to Atlantis with reports of the outer realm's status.  After hours of going over reports, 'Jakka' convinced Namor to return to the outer realm with him.  Before they left,  Trufaut contacted Namor with a red herring about the true culprit.  At Amphitrite, Proteus showed Namor the corpse of Jakka, and threatened to kill Jakka's soldiers unless Namor surrendered.  He had Namor stripped of his cape and crown and brought to the arena where Namor was given a crown of sea urchins and robed with seaweed.  Proteus then shifted into Namor's form and did battle with Namor.  During the lengthy battle, Proteus assumed the forms of Neptune, a monstrous eel, a murderous sea-beast, a weltering whirlpool, and a poisonous jellyfish, all forms weakening Namor further.  Namor finally fought back and Proteus battled as an octopus, flames, a child, and a vagrant.  Proteus was defeated by Namor, despite trying several tactics

(Sub-Mariner II#4) - Proteus, in the form of  Namor, gathered at Pontus with Dragonrider (on one of her dragons), Trufaut, and the Mad Twins for final battle with Namor.  When Namor arrived, thinking Trufaut kidnapped, Namor battled the villains and was knocked aside by each of them. Namor soon defeated Trufaut, but the fate of Proteus is unknown.

Clarifications:

Proteus has no known connections to

Jakka

(Sub-Mariner II#1 (BTS)) - Jakka was sent by Namor, the Sub-Mariner, and the Council of Elders (Vashti, Shakkoth, and Thakos) to investigate rumors of rebellion on Atlantis's borders.

(Sub-Mariner II#2 (fb)) - Jakka was murdered by Proteus when he arrived at Amphitrite, and his soldiers were taken captive.

(Sub-Mariner II#2) - Proteus returned to Atlantis disguised as Jakka, and used Jakka's reports and information to lure Namor back to the outer realm.  Namor was shocked to see Jakka's corpse.
