First Appearance: Avengers I#319 (July, 1990)

History: (Avengers I#319) - The Peace Corpse stole aboard the British submarine Waterwind and killed the boat's captain, and congratulated Allanson for having aided them in raiding the vessel. They took the submarine's crew captive, and took over all of the ship's operations as they set towards New York. However, they were intercepted along the way by the Avengers and the People's Protectorate. As the two teams began to quarrel over matters of jurisdiction, an army of Atlanteans appeared, angered that the vessel was passing through their waters.

(Avengers I#320) - The Peace Corpse took advantage of the confusion to escape, pursued only by Stingray. Needing make repairs, the Peace Corpse decided to surface at the nearest landmass, which proved to be St. John's, Newfoundland. Stingray attempted to set the captured crew free, but he was caught by Strokov. When the Avengers and People's Protectorate caught up to the Peace Corpse, they demanded that they be allowed to use St. John's facilities, or they would kill a hostage every five minutes until their demands were met. When Captain America refused to accept their demands, Prokvitch shot Stingray in the head (Stingray survived the shot because of his costume).

(Avengers I#321) - Alpha Flight arrived, and their leader Guardian offered the Peace Corpse asylum for the purpose of repairs, but promised that the asylym would end if they killed another hostage. The Avengers, Alpha Flight and People' Protectorate soon put together a squad to take out the Peace Corpse and defeated four of them, but Strokov and Prokvitch had attached themselves to complicated machinery which would detonate the vessel's payload if anyone tried to interfere.

(Avengers I#322) - The Red Guardian attempted to use his past history to appeal to Prokvitch, but had no success. The heroes finally launched a sudden attack at the two men and disconnected all of the relays, but this activated a failsafe, causing the entire payload to go off.

(Avengers I#323) - Shaman saved everyone at the scene of the blast by pulling them into his pouch, and Allanson, Kuryestan, Mendev and Voroshilov joined with the Avengers, Alpha Flight, People's Protectorate, Atlanteans, and citizens of St. John's in pooling their resources in an attempt to return to Earth, but they discovered that the radiation they absorbed in the detonation would kill them as soon as they returned to Earth. Just then, Strokov and Prokvitch reappeared, having been mutated by the radiation into the Combine, who was now intent on completing the Peace Corpse's mission.

(Avengers I#324) - The assembled heroes fought the Combine, and ultimately the four remaining Peace Corpse members offered to save the day by willingly merging with the Combine, hoping to atone for their actions by taking control of the Combine's collective willpower. The merging was a success, and the Combine abandoned its attempt to set off a nuclear explosion.

Comments: Created by Fabian Nicieza, Richard Levins and Christopher Ivy.

Voroshilov is visually similiar to Anya Zotov, another Fabian Nicieza creation (from Psi-Force) who was a Russian woman with short blonde hair and smoked cigarettes. Voroshilov didn't have Anya's trademark sarcasm, however.

CLARIFICATIONS:
The Peace Corpse should not be confused with:

ALLANSON

Allanson was an Englishman who served as an officer aboard the Waterwind. He assisted the Peace Corpse in raiding the Waterwind, lured to their side by the promise of money. He aided them in operating the submarine, not realizing what their true goals were. Allanson later repented of his actions, and joined with the rest of the Peace Corpse in merging with the Combine in order to assert their will over Strokov and Prokvitch.

KURYESTAN

Kuryestan was a member of the Peace Corpse, and served as their engineer while the Waterwind was under their control. Kuryestan joined with the rest of the Peace Corpse in merging with the Combine in order to assert their will over Strokov and Prokvitch.

MENDEV

Mendev was a member of the Peace Corpse, and served as their communications officer while the Waterwind was under their control. ILLYICH PROKVITCH

General-Major Illyich Prokvitch was a childhood of Josef Petkus, who later became the Red Guardian. He was married to a woman named Anna, and had more than one child (only his daughter Oskana was mentioned by name). Prokvitch conceived of the plot to lead the Peace Corpse in stealing the Waterwind in the hopes of starting a new world war in order to revive Russia's economy. After the warheads were detonated, Prokvitch was merged with Strokov into the entity Combine, and attempted to release the radiation absorbed by Alpha Flight, the People's Protectorate, the Avengers, Atlanteans, and people of St. John's in order to meet his original goals, but the rest of the Peace Corpse joined the Combine, and asserted their will over his.

STROKOV

Strokov was Prokvitch's right hand man in the Peace Corpse, and believed in their mission even more strongly than Prokvitch, and attempted to force Prokvitch to carry out their threat of nuclear detonation. After the warheads were detonated, Strokov was merged with Prokvitch into the entity Combine, and attempted to release the radiation absorbed by Alpha Flight, the People's Protectorate, the Avengers, Atlanteans, and people of St. John's in order to meet his original goals, but the rest of the Peace Corpse joined the Combine, and asserted their will over his.

VOROSHILOV

Voroshilov was the sole female member of the Peace Corpse. She often smoked cigarettes, and took charge of the Waterwind's radar during their occupation of the vessel. She joined with the rest of the Peace Corpse in merging with the Combine in order to assert their will over Strokov and Prokvitch.
