History:

(X-Force I# -1 (fb) - BTS) - Michael Whitecloud was a longtime friend of John Proudstar at the Camp Verde Apache Reservation.

(X-Force I# -1 (fb) - BTS) - Michael Whitecloud was either fired or otherwise left a job as a reporter for an unidentified newspaper in Phoenix, Arizona, primarily because their publisher didn't want him accusing his country club pals in his paper; Whitecloud was told that his reporting was radical for their readership.

(X-Force I# -1 (fb) - BTS) - Whitecloud discovered that every Apache in Camp Verde diagnosed with cancer in the last three years had had their labwork sent to Arroyo Laboratories. He further found the lab to be surrounded by an electrical fence, and he suspected that something wrong was going on. He also found the American Medical Association had not record of that lab's existence.

(X-Force I# -1) - Seeing that John Proudstar was returning from his tour with the marines and aware that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer, Michael resolved to meet up with him and share what he had learned.

At a roadside carnival, Michael met up with John, showing him the medical records and asking his help in breaking into Arroyo

(X-Force I# -1 (fb) - BTS) - Either that evening or an evening soon after, Michael and John traveled to Arroyo Medical Laboratory, 60 miles north of Camp Verde, in John's pickup truck. They didn't realize that John's younger brother, James, had sneaked into the back of the pickup and come along.

(X-Force I# -1) - After John had scaled the building, gotten inside and opened the door, Michael asked what he had been eating for breakfast as he'd never seen anybody scale a building so quickly; John blew off the question, urging him inside and asking him how often he saw somebody scale a building at all.

Inside they found advanced  equipment, and Michael discovered two different sets of records for every patient, and it appeared that they had been doctored with to show cancerous growths that required radiation therapy; half of those reports had been signed by Edwin Martynec, Maria Proudstar's doctor.

After discovering that James had followed them into the lab, John found a number of mutated fetuses (feti?, some of which were originally human) in containment vats. However, as Michael started taking pictures, Dr. Martynec discovered them, grabbed James, held him at gunpoint and advised them trespassers that they would not leaving with any pictures. He subsequently confirmed that he had been studying the effects of concentrated radiation on human and animal tissue and that they were looking at his attempts to clone organs and animals from irradiated DNA.

Furious at his people having been treated that way, John kicked Martynec back, but Martynec then transformed into his hybrid-coyote form and fought back. At John's urging, Michael grabbed James and departed to call the police; John advised Michael that he and James were never there and that he would take the fall if needed, but they needed to expose Martynec's activities.

(X-Force I# -1 - BTS) - Counting on his own ability to survive an explosion, Martynec blew up the laboratory, but John reached the warehouse door and was thrown far into the air and landed on broken asphalt, but he survived as well.

The official story was that the lab explosion was caused by a faulty gas main, and Martynec's body was never found.

(X-Force I# -1) - Michael shared the official story with John, assuring him that he was in the clear. Michael then advised John to watch his back, telling him he was heading to New Mexico as he had gotten a lead on some gamma bomb the army was trying to test out there.

(Incredible Hulk I#1 - BTS) - Michael was presumably investigating the gamma bomb testing that eventually led to the mutation of Bruce Banner into the Hulk.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Michael appreciated that John Proudstar was a mutant and suspected that James was one as well.

(Giant-Size X-Men#1 (fb) - BTS, maybe) - Michael witnessed John Proudstar bing down a buffalo with his bare hands.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Michael exposed a number of corrupt politicians and land developers. whitecloud-michael-cv-xf72-phonefear

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - John Proudstar told James that Michael should be working for the New York Times or the Washington Post.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Michael was fired from the Tacoma Register.

(X-Force I#72 (fb)) <Nearly two years before the main story> - Michael met the radiologist Lucius DeWitt who brought to his attention Project: Stepladder, an experimental genetics program trying to introduce a mutagenic virus in its lab animals, as well as in human subjects: convicts, runaways and unsuspecting pregnant women. DeWitt agreed to provide Michael with solid evidence of the project's illegal research if Michael could provide him with a safe place to lie low, because the project had a very powerful sponsor.

Believing DeWitt would be safe at Camp Verde, Michael brought him there; and DeWitt brought with him one of his test subject, Gordon Thorpe, who had gained nearly bulletproof skin but left with cancer-riddled lungs. The two men brought internal project memos and reports that would have been the backbone of Whitecloud's expose'.

That night, when Michael went out to make copies of everything they'd given him, his car broke down, and he went back to the reservation on foot, taking a shortcut that probably saved his life.

(New Mutants I#99 (fb) - BTS / X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS / X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Camp Verde was set aflame and all of its inhabitants slain by a death squad courtesy of Project: Stepladder (under the ultimate direction of Martynec and the Project's secret leader, Stryfe), slaying the entire Apache tribe to cover up the murders of DeWitt and Thorpe, and they wanted to make sure they hadn't spoken to anyone.

(X-Force I#72 (fb)) - When he returned, Michael found Camp Verde burning, the air choked with flame and toxic smoke, and all of the people he'd known and grown up with were dead. Realizing that those responsible would learn he wasn't dead sooner or later, Michael fled into the canyons and lived off the land for a couple of days.

(X-Force I#66 (fb) - BTS / X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - James Proudstar found a body in Michael Whitecloud's house (presumably DeWitt (or Thorpe, but DeWitt was smaller, and Thorpe was superhuman)) and believed it to have been Michael. James buried the victims of the massacre.

(X-Force I#72 (fb)) - When he finally surfaced, he learned that the official story was that a truck hauling chemicals jackknifed outside the reservation.

(New Mutants I#99 (fb) - BTS / X-Force I#73 (fb) - BTS) - Someone under Stryfe and/or Martynec's direction planted a Hellfire Club at the scene of the massacre to throw James Proudstar, Cable or Xavier's brood off the trail.

(X-Force I#72 (fb)) - Michael tried to contact the few editors that he trusted, but his calls were intercepted. A cold, digital voice told Michael that he was dead unless he turned over the documents in his possession.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Going on the run, Michael hid his evidence in a locker in a bus station in Topeka, Kansas. Fearing that the wrong person would find the key/locker, Michael threw away the key somewhere in Montana.

(X-Force I#72 (fb)) - For an extended period of time, Michael lived on the street, working as day labor, always looking over his shoulder. After a while, he started drinking to numb the pain.whitecloud-michael-cv-xf66-face

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS / X-Force I#73 (fb)) - Some months after the Camp Verde massacre, those involved with Project: Stepladder apparently located Michael. Despite being drunk, he resisted their (apparently including Martynec) efforts to force him to reveal where he kept the second copy of his notes. They implanted a device in his head that would explode if he tried to reveal who was behind the Project, but left him living, figuring he was bound to tell someone, someday where he kept the copy.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Michael never dared to go back for the documents, feeling that they were his life insurance, and, if he told anybody, nobody otherwise believed his drunken tales.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Michael lived in a residential hotel for the past year (relative to the main story>. At least most recently, he was in the upstairs room 4B.

(X-Force I#66 (fb)) <One month before the main story> - Michael was photographed with two other unidentified men.whitecloud-michael-cv-xf72-suspended

(X-Force I#66 - BTS) - The mutant known as Sledge showed James Proudstar (now aka Warpath) the recent photograph of Michael and informed James that he had never learned the truth about the Camp Verde massacre but that Michael could tell him. Sledge offered James Michael's location in return for "a favor."

(X-Force I#68-70 - BTS) - To fulfill his part of the agreement, James traveled to another dimension and recovered the Vanisher.

(X-Force I#71 (fb) - BTS) - After James returned with the Vanisher, Sledge gave him his Whitecloud's location in Nebraska.

(X-Force I#72 - BTS) - James traveled with his friend and X-Force teammate Theresa Rourke (aka Siryn) to Salvation Nebraska to the residential hotel in which Whitecloud had been staying.

(X-Force I#72 (fb) - BTS) - Two weeks behind on his rent, Michael apparently heard James approaching his room, thought it was a hitman coming for him and fled out the window (taking his bottle with him) and onto the fire escape. However, Theresa flew up and caught him.

(X-Force I#72) - As Theresa held him by the jacket, Michael cried out in surprise and told her to put him down. After Theresa set Michael back down on the fire escape, James told Michael who he was. Reekingof alcohol, the relieved Michael explained that he had thought they were hitmen.

He asked James how they had found him, but James instead told him about the body he had found in Michael's house, and Michael replied that it should have been him that had died there.

After the three of them had gone back into Michael's hotel room, Michael shared the true fate of Camp Verde and his involvement and subsequent activities.

Theresa tried to tell him he could get help for his alcohol problem, but he said it was too late as he was washed up, and that it was up to James now.

Michael gave James the paper with the number of the locker in the Topeka bus station, figuring that his powers would allow him to open it without the long-gone key. whitecloud-michael-cv-xf72-agony

When James asked who exactly had funded Project Stepladder, Michael noted that it was getting hard to think and that the ringing in the head was getting louder.

Lifting Michael into the air, James told him to focus, and Michael told him he wanted to tell, but he suddenly was overwhelmed by the pain and pressure in his head; he started screaming, and blood began pouring from his nose.

James sent Theresa to call 911, but Michael said, "--F-feels like >NNFFF< head's about to ex--"

And then his head exploded, spattering brain matter and bone fragments 360 degrees around the room.

(X-Force I#72 - BTS) - Realizing they had to get out of there before the people responsible or the police showed up, James and Theresa departed, heading to Topeka to find the locker.

(X-Force I#72 - BTS) - Posing as an FBI agent, Martin Edwards (formerly Edwin Martynec, although I'll keep using that name as it's more recognizable) showed up as police investigated the death and zipped up the bag containing Michael's remains.

Martynec told the police officers that Whitecloud had been wanted in connection with a prior drug investigation and that this was likely a drug-related killing.

Seeing a picture from the lobby surveillance camera of the young people leaving the building just before the body's discovery,Martynec recognized James and resolved that he would join his tribe in oblivion.

(X-Force I#73 - BTS) - After James and Theresa reached the Trailhound bus station in Topeka, James tore open the locker and collected the notes, at which point they were confronted by Martynec, who had trailed them. Via drugged claws, he subdued them both.

(X-Force I#73 (fb) - BTS) - Martynec brought Siryn and James to his lab/base, somewhere in Arkansas, and put them in restraints.

(X-Force I#73 - BTS) - Martynec revealed to his captives that Stryfe was responsible for the Camp Verde massacre. Siryn eventually broke free and freed James, and they subdued Martynec, but not before he injected James with a massive amphetamine dose that sent him into cardiac arrest.

(X-Force I#74 - BTS) - James emerged in some afterlife/purgatory, where he encountered Stryfe, who told him that he had arranged his death to use his soul to buy his own freedom/resurrection from the realm's lord, Blackheart; specifically, Stryfe's spirit would be reborn in James' body.

However, Siryn was able to reach James' spirit, restoring a connection to his body. After Brunnhilde the Valkyrie sent X-Force teammates Boom-Boom (Tabitha Smith), Danielle Moonstar and Sunspot (Bobby DaCosta), James defeated Stryfe and returned to his own body. His teammates were sent back to Earth as well.

Michael's referencing having witnessed John Proudstar bringing down a buffalo with his bare hands is presumably in reference to John's iconic introduction in Giant-Size X-Men#1, although he certainly may have done that on more than one occasion.

    Michael's heightwhitecloud-michael-cv-xf72-height

In X-Force minus 1, John Proudstar is shown to be crazy tall, like 14" taller than his mother or Dr. Edwin Martynec or Michael Whitecloud. John is listed as only 6'1 ½" tall in his handbook profiles, based on his original X-Men appearances. He may have been shown to be larger since being revived on Krakoa? I'm thinking artistic license in X-Force minus 1.

However, while James Proudstar is like 7' tall, and Michael is way shorter than him, Michael is also shown in at least panel standing fairly close to the 5'7" Siryn, and he seems to be shorter than her, even though he is a little more in the foreground.

Thanks to Chris McCarver for confirming the massacre of Camp Verde to have occurred in New Mutants I#99.

Michael Whitecloud does not appear in Incredible Hulk I#1, Giant-Size X-Men#1 or New Mutants I#99. Those are all pre-existing stories into which he was retroactively inserted BTS via his four actual appearances in 1997-1998.

This profile was completed 05/16/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event to represent Thunderbird (Jonathan Proudstar).
