History:
(Jungle Tales I#1/2) - As Waku's chieftain father Kaba was lying on his
deathbed, he made Waku promise that he would never use force and
strength to lead the Bantu. Waku protested that force and strength were
needed in the jungle but Kaba insisted that Waku make no warfare, be an
enlightened and gentle leader, and use kindness and skill but forbear
the use of violence. Waku agreed and soon after, Kaba died. Unknown to
Waku, his lover Lalei overheard the entire conversation.
Waku informed the Bantu that his father had died. According to tradition, Waku was challenged to physical combat by Mabu to prove that he was worthy of being their chief but Waku refused to fight Mabu. Outraged, the Bantu people banished Waku from their village. Mabu became chief of the Bantu. One evening, Waku fought an elephant and slew it with his spear. The next day, Mabu claimed he was the one who slew the elephant and told the Bantu to contact nearby White hunters to arrange the sale of the elephant's carcass. In the month that followed, Waku continued to monitor the Bantu from a distance while living in the nearby jungle.
Determined to bring Waku back to the Bantu, Lalei dressed herself in Kaba's headdress and robe and claimed to be Kaba's spirit. Confronting the Bantu, "Kaba" claimed he was releasing Waku from the promise he had made. Waku immediately realized the deception but declared he was freed from his promise and challenged Mabu for leadership of the Bantu. Wrestling in unarmed combat, Waku overcame Mabu and hurled him into a fire. Waku prepared to hurl himself into the fire as well because he knew he had broken his promise to his father. However, the actual spirit of Kaba appeared and informed Waku that he was free of his promise. Waku took his place as chief of the Bantu and the village celebrated his assuming the mantle of leadership.
(Jungle Tales I#2/2) - The Bantu village was menaced by a powerful jungle storm. The only open passage for the villagers to escape through would take them through the burial place of their ancestors, which Waku reluctantly led them through. The ambitious Hoda tried to kill Waku by raising an army of dead men as his zombie followers but when Waku evaded them, Hoda tried to summon reinforcements, only to conjure up undead animals; the animals, who were each slain by hunters, attacked the zombies, drove them off, then attacked and killed Hoda before returning to their graves.
(Jungle Tales I#3/2) - The Fire God seemed to have forsaken the Bantu, as in various circumstances, fires would burn out of control. The old man Gukai questioned Waku's leadership until finally Waku relinquished leadership to his friend Jobu. Waku continued to investigate why the fires had been raging out of control and soon discovered Jobu had been behind the incidents as part of a scheme to depose Waku. Jobu sent a pack of leopards to kill Waku but a sudden fire caused by the Fire God drove off the leopards. Waku went to attack Jobu and Jobu fled, tripping and falling on his knife, killing himself. The Fire God then appeared before Waku to speak its approval of Waku and told him to rule his people wisely. Waku resumed being chief of the Bantu.
(Jungle Tales I#4/2) - When the war-monger Rakatu began threatening other tribes, Waku faced pressure to start a fight against him but Waku insisted the Bantu should wait until the right time. The Bantu feared Waku was a coward but when Rakatu finally came to their village, Waku confronted Rakatu and demanded he face him in one-on-one combat to the death. Waku bested Rakatu in combat then hurled him to Gondo the gorilla, who pursued Rakatu through the jungle to kill him. The Bantu apologized for thinking Waku had been a coward.
(Jungle Tales I#5/2) - The young Bantu Kom led a revolt against Waku but in one-on-one combat, Waku bested him then declared him an outcast. When Waku heard Lalei had gone to try and make peace with Kom, he rode into the jungle on the back of his tamed lion Naru. Waku found Kom menacing Lalei and fought him but their battle drew the attention of Chong, a gigantic gorilla. Waku used his spear to set off sparks, which resulted in a fire to ward off Chong. This left Waku trapped before a swamp full of crocodiles and serpents but he asked Naru for aid. Naru summoned a pack of lions who helped carry Waku and Lalei safely through the fire. Despite Kom's constant belittling, he begged Waku to save him and Waku brought him to safety with the lions. Waku declared that Naru was a king among the lions even as he was prince to the Bantu and in exchange for having saved his, Lalei and Kom's lives, he was setting Naru free. Impressed by Waku's abilities, Kom humbled himself and asked to serve Waku. Waku permitted Kom to return to the Bantu village.
(Jungle Tales I#6/2) - Waku participated in an annual test of his bravery by entering the jungle alone and unarmed to face various threats. Zabo and a witch doctor of the Bantu schemed together to arrange Waku's death so Zabo could assume leadership of the Bantu and they captured Lalei when she discovered their plan. Zabo used a poisoned dart to rile up a lion to attack Waku but Waku defeated the lion bare-handed. Next, Zabo tried to jostle a nest of snakes into attacking Waku by hurling a stone at them but Waku intercepted the stone. Waku confronted Zabo and the witch doctor and as he fought Zabo, they were menaced by a pack of crocodiles. However, the crocodiles ignored Waku, focusing instead on Zabo and the witch doctor, apparently aware they were evil and Waku was not. Zabo and the witch doctor fled for their lives while Waku and Lalei returned safely to the Bantu.
(Jungle Tales I#7/2) - The Kabi tribe led by Kojii marched on Bantu lands, declaring they were prepared for war. Waku attempted to bargain with them but Kojii had Lalei kidnapped in order to force Waku to abdicate his post to save her life. Waku agreed to their terms and Kojii ordered him to lead them to the Bantu village. However, Waku instead led the Kabi to the Stone Mountain of the Million Monkeys, where the Kabi were assaulted by a massive amount of monkeys. Waku fled with Lalei and although the Kabi continued to pursue him, Waku drove them back with a fire then found an enormous bird large enough to bear him and Lalei on its back. The bird flew them to safety.
(Jann of the Jungle I#8/2) - When Kami and his daughter were menaced by a lion while looking for a place to plant rice, Waku faced the animal and fought it off with his bare hands. The Bantu grew restless with Waku, noting they needed space to plant rice and if he couldn't find a way, he would no longer be their ruler. Omado and Chomachi noted the great pool that supplied their waters had been dammed and Waku intended to release the water so they could plant rice. However, Omado and Chomachi were well aware there was a volcano nearby the pool and the lava would be almost certain to kill Waku. Lalei overheard them plotting and went to warn Waku. Lalei caught up to Waku just as he was being menaced by rhinos which then threatened Lalei but Waku spirited her up into a tree before the animals could stampede her. Lalei told Waku about Omado and Chomachi's plot but Waku was determined to continue on his quest, as he couldn't remain chief otherwise.
Waku and Lalei arrived at the pool, pursued by Omado and Chomachi, who wanted to ensure Waku failed in his quest. Although he found the pool's waters were boiling hot, Waku dove in and dislodged the branches which had dammed the river, releasing the water. Waku rescued Lalei from the current but let Omado and Chomachi be swept away; the two men fell into a pig sty and the Bantu declared both men had been chastised by the gods and must become swineherds.

Fans have likened Waku to Black Panther as both are heroic African princes. Waku wasn't Marvel's first African hero to star in their own story though - that honor belongs to M'Tuba.

Naru was a lion that had been captured by the Bantu and tamed by Waku. Waku could ride upon Naru's back and the lion seemed to understand Waku's verbal orders. Waku rode on Naru in order to pursue the outcast Kom into the jungle and rescue Lalei from him. Trapped by a fire, Waku promised to give Naru his freedom for saving his life. Naru summoned other lions from his pack, who helped carry lead Waku and Lalei to safety. Once they were freed from the fire, Waku set Naru free, declaring he was a king among the lions even as Waku was prince among the Bantu.
