Powers/Abilities: A Tyrannosaurus rex, Tytan had a powerful head, neck and jaws, with a mouth full of very sharp teeth.
His scales were dense, like armor.
While his forelimbs were vestigial, he
had a powerful tail, which could be used to swat or trip opponents.
Additionally, Tytan had both
human-level intelligence and could communicate with others
telepathically.

(Psychonauts#2 (fb) - BTS) - Sometime before the great evacuation of 2055 A.D. (see comments), Japanese scientists -- seeking to create powerful warriors -- fused human intelligence capacities with dinosaurs grown from artificial DNA to create the Mutosaurs. Tytan was further psionically-enhanced, granting him telepathy. He was the leader of the Mutosaurs. Over time, the people perished, some died from disease while others were eaten by the Mutosaurs; while other Mutosaurs remembered "human things" deep in their minds and it made them angry and hateful to humans, Tytan's memories just made him sad. Over further time, the
Mutosaurs, unable to operate technology, stayed locally, feeding
off each other and otherwise dying... (Psychonauts#1 (fb) - BTS) -
In 2199 A.D., the Psychonauts were sent from the space cities to
Earth to see if it was suitable for humanity's return. Initially
landing in England and rescuing/recruiting Baobhan Sith...  (Psychonauts#2 (fb) - BTS) - ...the Psychonauts were forced use nuclear power to enhance Nymn's teleportational ability to transport the entire group escape mutated soldiers and their masters. They arrived outside of Tokyo, where they were assaulted by Mutosaurs. (Psychonauts#2) - When another theropod (possibly an allosaurus) threatened the Psychonauts, Tytan appeared and telepathically commanded the other theropod to stop. When it instead roared a challenge, Tytan rushed forward, grabbing it by the head and neck with his teeth and threw it to the ground. Despite the other theropod's hind claws raking his body and a trio of velociraptors attempting to feed on either of the battling larger dinosaurs, Tytan slew the other theropod and drove off the raptors with a swat of his tail. Meanwhile, Marcus, the Psychonauts' telepath, explained that they had heard the creature's thoughts telepathically. When Tytan subsequently approached them, Rod the leader of the group and a telekine, advised that bullets would do little against the creature's hide (as the other theropod had shrugged off automatic weapon-fire), and he raised the turf in front of them telekinetically as a shield. Marcus then telepathically told Tytan that they had come in peace, and Tytan greeted him, assuring Marcus that he meant no harm to them, after which he waved a vestigial hand. |
After Marcus shared that they were in the Valley of the Mutosaurs,
the Psychonauts' Ojin Hyaku recalled hearing of their origins,
which he shared with the group. Marcus advised the other that they
could speak directly to Tytan, but Rod cautiously instructed
Marcus to keep scanning his mind and warn them if the dinosaur
even thought of attacking them.  After the Psychonauts had set up camp, Tytan assured them that they need not fear him as he would hurt them. He further explained that the other Mutosaurs had forgotten their human heritage and that the call of the wild had reclaimed them. As the Psychonauts fed on the meat of slain theropod, Ken Ramada asked Tytan why the Mutosaurs had never left Japan, Tytan explained that they could not operate machinery and were obsolete. Tytan considered that it was better this was, as their time was done a long time ago. Sensing as the other Mutosaurs approached, Tytan advised Rod that he needed to waken his team and depart, as the other Mutosaurs would return at dawn and that he could not protect them against them all.  The group departed the valley as the sun rose, with Tytan bringing up the rear, a monster in exile, and they eventually reached Tokyo. (Psychonauts#2 - BTS) - Tytan sat down and patiently waited as the Psychonauts searched for a vehicle of some sort. They eventually found an ancient dirigible-like airship. (Psychonauts#2) - As the airship was filled, Rod asked Tytan to accompany them, noting that the ship was big enough to carry him and that he had no future locally, but Tytan sadly replied that he had no future anywhere. After giant spiders threatened Marcus and Nimn, Tytan stayed behind to fight them off so the Psychonauts could safely depart. (Psychonauts#3 - BTS) - Communicating with his secret ally the Flugwield space city's president Harman Gurth, Dr. Schaay noted that Tytan was no longer a problem. |

(Psychonauts#4 - BTS) - The Psychonauts met
with a group of subterranean telepaths who shielded their presence
from Schaay. Although they could not return to the surface world, they agreed to use their collective power to try to locate Tytan and to teleport him to the Psychonauts to help them defeat Schaay. (Psychonauts#4) - Teleported to Manhattan by the telepaths, Tytan swatted away one of Schaay's minions with his tail and then confronted the Schaay-beast, biting him on the neck/tentacle and telling him that this was not his world and that there was no place for him here. However, the powerful Schaay-beast used his bulk to smash Tytan through a wall and then wrap his tentacles around Tytan's neck, snapping it and apparently killing him. (Psychonauts#4 - BTS) - Using his gun's power pack, Ramada boosted Nymn's powers, allowing her to teleport them to London, grab a nuclear weapon and transport it back to them via the cyber-net. Just before the bomb detonated, they teleported the rest of the team a safe distance from Manhattan. However, Ramada and Nymn apparently could not transport themselves and perished as well. If Tytan was not already dead from the Schaay-Beast's assault, then he almost certainly perished via incineration by being at ground zero of a nuclear explosion. |

Earth-93116 Circa 2055 A.D., as Earth suffered
from mass pollution and radiation and was considered no longer habitable,
a number of executives had space cities created to which they transported
themselves, the government officials who financed them, technicians,
experts in numerous fields and a few thousand "common folk" to expand the
gene pool. By 2199, the space cities suffered from dangerous overcrowding,
and so a group of psychic beings -- Marcus Angel, Rod Kaine, Tsuzi Q, Ken
Ramada, Nymn and Ojin Hyaku -- known as the Psychonauts were sent to
determine if Earth was habitable. Despite various mutations and monsters,
they considered it to be so after apparently destroying the powerful Dr.
Schaay/Beast. Psychonauts #1 (1993)
According to
Wikipedia, the average T. rex was 12' tall, 40' long and between 5.5 and
8 tons. Tytan seemed to be closer to 18', so I extrapolated from that.
I'm not sure whether the Mutosaurs
had brain or memory implants from humans, but from what Tytan described,
they weren't just dinosaurs with human-level intelligence.
Tytan is a cool but very tragic character. Kudos to Loki for suggesting him as a profile to cover the Psychonauts.
The Psychonauts book was noted to be the first ever American-Japanese creatively co-produced comic book. It was a cool story and concept, and the characters were interesting, but the dialog was a little flat. It did seem as if they wrote the dialog after seeing the artwork, which is probably accurate.
