History:

(World of Fantasy I#19/2) - Jason Trump was a fanatic who didn't believe in the theory of gravity, insisting instead that the supreme force which held everything in check was magnetism. Each day he went to work at a laboratory he would lecture his fellow scientists with his beliefs until finally his employer had enough, saying his speeches had cost more lost time than a dozen strikes would have. Jason contemptuously declared he'd been "surrounded by idiots" long enough and set out to prove his theories were correct.

Relocating to a workshop in a lonely western valley, Jason began building his Magnetic Machine to control the power of magnetism. When the device was done, Jason decided he'd demonstrate its power to everyone on Earth by focusing its magnetic wave-ray into a single spot on the Moon, thinking it would render the Moon capable of supporting its own life. Jason knew the forces he was about to unleash could wreck havoc across the Earth but he was determined to prove his theory was correct. Jason activated the machine.

As the Magnetic Machine began to strengthen the Moon's magnetic field, it had a corresponding effect of causing immense rainfall across the Earth, resulting in rising ocean levels and flooding. As Jason remained by the machine in his workshop the water level around him continued to rise. Realizing his own life was in jeopardy he tried to switch off the machine but the magnetism was jumping over the cut-off switch, meaning it couldn't be shut down. Jason's one hope was to destroy the machine but he couldn't bring himself to do that because it was his life's work. As the water continued to rise, Jason finally drowned.

After Major Tek used a crowbar to smash the Magnetic Machine's dome, the waters receded and the U.S. Army found Jason's body next to the machine. Major Tek thought it was fitting that Jason had died with his machine.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Jason Trump should not be confused with:

MAGNETIC MACHINE

The Magnetic Machine was built by Jason Trump in his workshop. It emitted a magnetic wave-ray which Jason concentrated into a single tiny spot. Wanting the whole world to see what he had accomplished, Jason turned the beam on the Moon, thinking it would strengthen the Moon's own magnetic field and render it capable of supporting life. As the Moon's magnetic field increased, it caused a corresponding increase in rainfall and rising ocean levels on Earth. Jason tried to shut down the machine but the magnetism force jumped over the cut-off circuit, rendering it impossible to shut down. Unwilling to destroy the machine, Jason perished alongside it as the water levels rose. Finally, Major Tek swam into the workshop and used a crowbar to smash the top dome of the Magnetic Machine, shutting it off for good and ending its ill effects on the Earth.

MAJOR TEK

Major Tek was a U.S. Army officer whose staff discovered none of their compass needles were pointing north. Realizing their needles were drawn to something stronger, he followed this to Jason Trump's workshop in a helicopter. As the workshop had been submerged by water, Major Tek dived in and swam to the machine then struck its top dome with a crowbar, shattering it. This reverted the moon to its previous orbit and life on Earth soon returned to normal. Major Tek and his men examined the workshop and found Jason Trump's body by the Magnetic Machine. Major Trek realized Trump had wanted to deactivate the device but had been unable to because it was his life's work. He felt in a way, this was a fitting end for the scientist.
