Powers/Abilities: Topspin has the power of superhuman speed. He can easily surpass the speed of sound and generate a vortex of wind by spinning. He is also able to fly through the air (although it is unclear whether he can hover). As a high-ranking member of the V-Battalion he has access to a wide variety of advanced technology, including devices in his costume which permit him to survive in Earth's orbit. He usually travels aboard the Vanguard, the V-Battalion's immense personnel carrier.

History:

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion: The Everlasting I#1/text) - Darren Mitchell is the grandson of the superhuman Human Top. Although his father did not possess powers, Darren was a mutant who seemed to inherit powers very similar to his grandfather. Like his father and grandfather, Darren entered the ranks of the V-Battalion. He was loyal to the group because they had given his family more opportunity than "normal" society would have but he was also aware that the V-Battalion had raised him in an isolated environment. By the age of 22 he had become a member of the V-Battalion's Penance Council and served as one of their superhuman field agents.

(Thunderbolts I#40) - When Citizen V disappeared during a battle against the Thunderbolts, the V-Battalion mobilized the Vanguard to Mount Charteris and the Penance Council used the Vanguard's holographic project to confront the Thunderbolts, demanding to know what they knew of the V-Battalion. When the Thunderbolts' leader Hawkeye protested that they didn't know, Betty Barstow elected to take him at his word and they departed, unaware Atlas had snuck aboard the Vanguard.

The Vanguard returned to Castle Masada, Symkaria, where Atlas broke into an attack on the Vanguard. The other Thunderbolts followed, aided in crossing into Symkaria by intelligence from Silver Sable's former ally Sandman. To deal with the invaders Darren donned his Topspin costume and joined the Destroyer, Goldfire, Nuklo and Iron Cross in confronting them.

(Thunderbolts I#41) - Topspin attacked Songbird but she encased him inside a sonic force bubble. The fight between the Penance Council and the Thunderbolts ended when Moonstone lost control of her powers then fled the scene. Finally discussing their issues, Hawkeye admitted that by enabling Sandman into Symkaria they had endangered Silver Sable. Topspin joined the other council members and Thunderbolts against Sandman and used his powers to form a vortex around Sandman that kept his body discorporated until Goldfire fused Sandman into solid glass. The Thunderbolts departed from Symarkia as allies to the V-Battalion.

(Thunderbolts I#49) - The Penance Council held a meeting with Dr. Valerie Cooper at Castle Masada in which they shared what they knew about Henry Peter Gyrich's efforts to assassinate members of the Thunderbolts and how they enlisted Citizen V to recruit members of the Redeemers to handle Gyrich. Darren sat in on the meeting but did not speak.

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion I#1) - Darren attended a meeting of the Penance Council while Citizen V was active in the field but not responding to messages.

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion I#2) - When A.I.M. used voice-controlled nanoprobes on the population of Atlantis, Iron Cross led Nuklo, Goldfire and Topspin to attack the Atlantean forces. Iron Cross was willing to exterminate all of the infected Atlanteans which Topspin took issue with. Fortunately, the Destroyer took control of the nanoprobes and released the Atlanteans from A.I.M.'s control. The Destroyer then led Topspin, Goldfire, Nuklo and Iron Cross to attack A.I.M. and force MODOK to reveal where the nanoprobe experiment originated, leading them to Hydra.

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion I#3) - Iron Cross led Topspin, Goldfire and Nuklo on a mission into space to the network of satellites that Hydra was using to control their nanoprobes. As Nuklo prepared to destroy a satellite Topspin and Goldfire flew out of range. Topspin remarked it "sucks" that he'd become so jaded about flying through space but Goldfire admitted to him that she was still thrilled by space travel. Iron Cross ultimately sacrificed his life to neutralize the nanoprobes.

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion: The Everlasting I#1) - Darren joined other Penance Council members as they reacted to the reappearance of Aqhat, an enemy who had died in 1953.

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion: The Everlasting I#2) - When the god Marduk altered the Collective Man's powers to absorbing the combined traits of China's entire population, Topspin, Goldfire and Nuklo led an assault against him but the Collective Man completely liquefied Goldfire. The Destroyer ordered the others to retreat; distraught by Goldfire's death, Topspin insisted they destroy the Collective Man but was ordered to hold back while Citizen V solved the problem.

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion: The Everlasting I#3) - Topspin retired to his quarters on the Vanguard and gazed at a photograph of himself with Ameiko, musing that she deserved better. His grandfather came to console him, prompting Topspin to ask if anything like that had happened when he was the Human Top. Davy responded that death was "a reality of life, D -- especially in our jobs." Darren retorted, "Then maybe... we should think... about getting new jobs..."

(Citizen V and the V-Battalion: The Everlasting I#4) - The V-Battalion held a funeral for Goldfire. Darren challenged Aubrey, "Does the war ever end?" to which Aubrey replied soldiers could lay down their arms when they had no more fight left; following this, Aubrey stepped down as leader of the Penance Council and promoted Jim Hammond in his stead.

He was mistakenly called "Daryl Mitchell" in Citizen V and the V-Battalion: The Everlasting I#1.

The unfortunate thing about Nicieza's V-Battalion comics is that he never had space to fully explore the concept; as stated, there was supposed to be conflict between the different generations represented by old men such as Aubrey and the generation that hadn't known war, such as Topspin. But although Topspin's appearances hinted at how dissatisified he was it never developed into a proper subplot - Aubrey and Citizen V tended to steal the spotlight from the rest of the cast (along with Nicieza's pet favorite Sterman). There's only so much room in 7 issues and those stories were packed tight as it was.

This profile was completed on 11/24/2025 but its publication was delayed, as it was intended for the Appendix's 25th anniversary celebratory event.
