History:

(Daring Mystery Comics I#3/7) - In search of adventure, Bob Strong went to Algeria and joined the French Foreign Legion and was made a captain under the command of Major Stephane Renald. When Ali Hassan and his band of pirates plundered merchant caravans, Major Renald ordered Captain Strong to deal with them. As the raids were being performed too far for the Foreign Legion to patrol, Captain Strong asked for a new outpost, which Major Renald approved. Captain Strong oversaw the start of the outpost's construction then began sending out patrols to find Ali Hassan.

While on patrol, Captain Strong and Lt. Dupuy were attacked by a band of pirates. Captain Strong left Lt. Dupuy in charge of the men as he snuck into the Arab pirates' camp and took the horse and robe from one of the Arabs, disguising himself so he could infiltrate Ali Hassan's camp. When the Arabs retreated under machine gun fire from Lt. Dupuy, Captain Strong followed them back to the camp and overheard Ali Hassan planning to assault the patrol that evening while they were asleep. As Captain Strong started back to his patrol, one of the Arabs recognized him as a spy and attacked him. When Captain Strong fought the man, a second Arab attacked him with a knife. Captain Strong turned the first attacker so that the knife landed in the man's back, then leaped upon his stoeln horse and shot the second Arab in the chest with his pistol.

When Captain Strong returned to his camp he was mistaken for an Arab and removed his robe so they would stop shooting at him. Informing his men about Ali Hassan's plan, he had them arrange dummies in the camp so they would seem to be asleep when Ali Hassan's band invaded. When Ali Hassan's men descended upon the dummies, they found themselves surrounded by Captain Strong's men. Captain strong and his men killed many of the Arabs. Ali Hassan was taken prisoner with the other surviving Arabs, who were marched back to Major Renald. With the pirates beaten, there was no longer a need to complete the new outpost.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes I#2 (fb)) - During World War II, Bob Strong joined a U.S. Army outfit called the Crazy S.U.E.S. (Specialized Unit, Enhanced Soldiers) that was comprised primarily of costumed super heroes. Sgt. Byrd and Captain America introduced themselves as the leaders of the unit. After their introduction, the unit went to their barracks and Strong spent time throwing a ball back and forth with Flash Foster. When "Slow-Motion" Jones touched the ball, Strong got angry, calling Jones a "dumb ape" and starting a fight that Sgt. Byrd had to break up. Strong claimed they it was just horseplay and Jones went along with him.

On August 7, 1942, the Crazy S.U.E.S. went sent to Guadacanal and Strong, while reading an issue of Daring Mystery Comics on the flight over, tried to start another fight with "Slow-Motion" Jones but Captain Flame threatened to boil his eyeballs if he didn't stop. Strong joined in the team's assault against Japanese forces in Guadalcanal.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes I#3 (fb)) - On August 13, 1942, Bob Strong was still on Guadalcanal when Captain Flame accidentally slew "Jap-Buster" Johnson.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes I#4 (fb)) - After their time in the Pacific, Strong joined the Crazy S.U.E.S. as they were sent into the European Theater of Operations.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes I#5 (fb)) - By the time the Crazy S.U.E.S. helped liberate Paris from the Nazis, Strong had stopped making bigoted taunts at "Slow-Motion" Jones, seeming to finally accept him as a fellow soldier.

(All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes I#1 (fb)) - On December 6, 1944, Bob Strong accompanied the Crazy S.U.E.S. into Saarlautern, Germany and witnessed the deaths of the Victory Boys.

Captain Strong received an OHOTMU entry in the Marvel Mystery Handbook.

Captain Strong's plan to defeat Ali Hassan by using dummies is reiminiscent of the most famous story about the French Foreign Legion - the novel Beau Geste (1924) by P. C. Wren - in which the Foreign Legion used the corpses of their fallen comrades to trick Arab attackers.

All-Winners Squad: Band of Heroes was supposed to be an 8-issue series but it was cancelled after issue #5 due to poor sales. Consequently, we don't know the fates of all of the Crazy S.U.E.S.; it's possible that Captain Strong died during World War II.
