History:
(
Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2 (fb) - BTS) -  R.C. Stevens was the Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2 (fb) - BTS) <Circa 1923> - Stevens prepared to hold a Klan Konklave along with Mary Jones, leader of the Women of the Klan, at a local country fair in Robinson, Mississippi. The banner read "Mississippi Kluxed Like It's Never Kluxed Before."

Unknown to Stevens and most others, Mary Jones was possessed by an Angel who had adopted the name of the New Orleans voodoo queen, Marie Laveau.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2 - BTS) - Stevens may or may not have been present when the Klan lynched a black man in Robinson for being present in the town after dark.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2) - Stevens dined with Mary Jones.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2) - Adorned in his KKK robes, Stevens spoke at the Konklave.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2 - BTS) - Stevens may or may not have been present as the Klan prepared to burn down a church with a black reverend and congregation. stevens-rc-93345-pantsless

Those present were assaulted and driven off by hellhounds and other creatures summoned by former blues musician Robert Jones, who had sold his soul to the Hell-lord Lucifer and who had grown up in Robinson.stevens-rc-93345-drunkface

Robert Jones subsequently confronted the Kleagle (local Klan-recruiter) Jack Davis, who had planned to deliver money to Stevens and Mary Jones, and -- in his Helhound form -- demanded to know Stevens' location.

After Davis revealed that they were having a party with other big shots at the Elite Hotel, Jones tore out Davis' heart.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2 (fb) - BTS) - Stevens raped and brutally beat Mary Jones in the hotel's room seven.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2 - BTS) - After Johnson and his fellow Hell-hunter Billy the Kid arrived at the hotel, Jones screamed and ran out of the room. After Johnson rushed to her side, Mary told how she had been beaten and raped before dying.

(Hellhound, the Redemption Quest#2) - Billy the Kid subsequently kicked down the door to room seven and prepared to shoot Stevens, but Ammon, an angel affiliated with the Marie Laveau angel, stopped him, advising him that his kind did not need a martyr for their evil cause.

Ammon subsequently advised Billy and Johnson -- who knew that Jones had been inhabited by the spirit of the Marie angel -- that Marie had known that Steven was a brute and that he had only harmed her body while her spirit had remained inviolate.

After Jones appreciated that Marie had planned this whole thing, Ammon confirmed that she had let this happen, as the publicity from Stevens' trial and conviction for rape and murder would cripple the Klan, and it would not return for 40 years.

Accused of rape and murder, Stevens could barely speak.

Comments: Created by John Miller and Floyd Hughes under the Epic imprint.

R.C. Stevens was based on the real life D.C. (David Curtis) Stephenson, Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan...and the real story is a lot more brutal and horrific than the comic book version.
This issue has a text feature at the end about the history of the Klan, but you can Google Stephenson and check out his history.

I'm sure most people are aware of the legend of Billy the Kid, and maybe Marie Laveau, but if you enjoy rock and/or blues music, look up Robert Johnson.

Earth-93345 Hell residents blues musician Robert Johnson and legendary outlaw Billy the Kid were forced by Lucifer to track down an angel in the form of Marie Laveau. Hellhound, the Redemption Quest #1 (1993)

I don't think I had read this series before reviewing it for the event.
