History:

(Navy Action#16/5 (fb) - BTS) - Captain Mahar Singh of the Indian Army Camel Corps acted as Indian liaison with the small US embassy in New Delhi, India, and had his sister Hala accompany him when showing newly arrived US Marine Pvt. "Devil-Dog" Dugan the nearby sights when Dugan was briefly stationed there. Attracted to Hala, Dugan organized dates with her for the coming week.

(Navy Action#16/5) - Mahar, Hala and Dugan arrived on their camels at the US embassy, where Dugan's superior M/Sgt. O'Brian O'Toole berated the Marine. Mahar politely remained silent when O'Toole made juvenile lovey eyes to Hala. The Indians left so the Marines could do their guard duty. Later, Communist agents, seeking to tarnish America's image in the region, stole the valuable Moon of India diamond from the nearby museum and kidnapped Dugan, using parts of his uniform to lay a trail to where Dugan was tied up. Informed by the museum of the theft, Mahar found the clues and followed them by camel. Trying to escape, Dugan crashed through a window and by chance landed on Mahar. Dugan quickly explained the Communists' plot to plant the diamond at the US embassy, so Mahar rushed them by camel there to stop the villains. Soon finding the fiends already on embassy grounds, Mahar and Dugan leapt and clobbered the Communist agents. Later, a parade was organized where Mahar and Dugan were celebrated as heroes of India.

With the turban and beard, Mahar looks to be very much a Sikh. With regard to his surname: (from Wikipedia) "The usage of Singh (for males) or Kaur (for females) in a Sikh name is mandated after baptism ... and based upon gender. Since the colonial period, many Sikhs have adopted using their caste or clan as a surname and instead use Singh or Kaur as a middle-name rather than a surname." So, as I read it, if it's Mahar Singh in this case, then it's very likely his sister's name would be Hala Kaur. Mahar has a hoop earring; piercings are unusual for Sikhs (and prohibited in modern era), but not unprecedented in older periods.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the last Devil-Dog Dugan story. This land-based comedic story (even if it is Marines) doesn't fit with the action naval theme of the comic's title, so I suspect this story was one of the fabled hidden inventory found by Martin Goodman during Atlas Comics' tumultuous downsizing around mid-1957.

Hala was Mahar Singh's sister. She accompanied her Indian Army brother in New Delhi as he showed newly arrived US Marine Pvt. "Devil-Dog" Dugan the local sights on camel back. Dugan was attracted to Hala and organized several dates during his time there, much to his superior's M/Sgt. O'Brian O'Toole's chagrin, as O'Toole also wanted a date. However, O'Toole managed to sneak a date with Hala by meeting her earlier; Dugan rushed to intercept but was caught up in a fiendish plot by Communist agents to tarnish America's image in India. Successfully defeating the villains, Mahar and Dugan were celebrated as heroes of India, and Hala greatly admired Dugan for this, which irritated O'Toole.
