Powers/Abilities: The Silver Surfer wielded "the Power Cosmic," absorbing and manipulating the universe's ambient cosmic energies. He could augment his strength to incalculable levels, and was almost totally indestructible - though not, as it turned out, to a truly angry Olympian. He could navigate space, hyperspace and dimensional barriers, and could fly at near-limitless speeds on his board, entering hyperspace when he exceeded light speed. The Surfer did not require food, drink, air or sleep, sustained entirely by his cosmic energy. He was immune to temperature extremes and most radiation, and could survive in vacuum environments such as outer space and hyperspace. He could fire energy blasts. His senses enabled him to detect objects and energies light years away. The Surfer's board was composed of the same almost impervious, cosmic-powered silvery material as its master's skin, and was mentally linked to the Surfer. He could merge in and out of it, allowing him to switch which side he was standing on mid-flight and mid-fight.

History:
(Hercules: Prince of Power I#3 - BTS) - When the world-devourer Galactus
consumed the planet Kawa a handful of Kawans survived. Believing
Galactus was a literal God of Vengeance, they came to believe they could
save the (Andromeda) galaxy by sacrificing planets to him. Thus they
formed the Brotherhood, religious zealots who each year would steal
entire worlds to deliver to their deity in exchange for his divine
mercy.
(Hercules:
Twilight of a God#2 (fb) ) - One of the Brotherhood worked
as their planetary scout, who would go on ahead of their world-ships
to recon space for suitable worlds. Eventually, during a time when he
was away from the fleet...
(Hercules: Prince of Power I#3 - BTS) - the Brotherhood's activities drew the attention of the Greek god Hercules, who destroyed their planet-towing device after they tried to steal Ciegrim-7. Deciding that they had sinned by failing to deliver a world on time, the Brotherhood decided to destroy themselves in atonement and blew up their ships.
(Hercules: Twilight of a God#2 (fb) ) - The scout was apparently the only survivor, not only of the Brotherhood but his entire species, arriving back at the fleet's co-ordinates just in time to witness the extinction of his entire race, and of Hercules departing without noticing him. Believing he had nowhere to go and nothing to live for, the scout decided to look upon the face of his god before going to his grave. It took him decades of searching the stars to locate Galactus, and when he finally did the scout had intended to destroy himself in full view of the planet-eater, but Galactus stopped him, sensing within the scout boundless rage that might prove a useful motivation. Needing a new Herald (see comments), Galactus asked the scout what he desired above all else; the scout responded that he wanted vengeance against Hercules.

into his new Herald, though using the form of a prior one, making him
the new Silver Surfer.
(Hercules: Twilight of a God#1) - The
Silver Surfer served Galactus faithfully for the best part of a century
(see comments), but an attempt to devour a world in a unique
planetary system in Quadrant 36 on the outer rim of the Andromeda Galaxy
went disastrously wrong, causing Galactus to absorb too much energy and
grow so massive that he collapsed in on himself, forming a black hole.
The Surfer came to his master's aid as soon as he could, asking what he
could do to free the world-devourer, but Galactus told him that it was
too late, and released him from his duties. With not only Galactus'
death seeming imminent, but also that of the entire Andromeda Galaxy as
the black hole was rapidly expanding, and thus no time to lose if he
wanted to get his long desired vengeance, the Surfer immediately set out
for the Wilamean homeworld, where Hercules had resided for the past
several decades. As he neared the planet he was so focused on his target
that he smashed through a spaceship that had been carrying would-be
terrorists planning an attack on the celebrations then being held to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Wilamean Democracy, destroying
it without a thought simply because it was in his way and he couldn't be
bothered to go round it. Reaching the homeworld the Surfer began
blasting the surface indiscriminately, raining bolts of cosmic energy
down to draw out Hercules. His plan succeeded. Accompanied by his friend
Recorder-417 and his grandson Ursus, Hercules took to the air in his
flying chariot to challenge whoever was behind the attacks, and was
confronted by the Surfer.
(Hercules: Twilight
of a God#2) - Somewhat confused due to recent brain damage he
had sustained, Hercules angrily denounced the Surfer as a pretender
because he wasn't Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfer that Hercules once
knew, and leapt at the herald. However to the Surfer's enhanced senses
and reflexes, Hercules seemed to be moving in slow motion and the Surfer
easily caught Hercules in mid-air, holding him up by his neck. He ranted
about why he hated Hercules and announced he was going to tear the
Olympian limb from limb, but before he could carry out this threat he
was shot in the back by a blaster fired by Hercules' granddaughter,
Juno, causing him to drop his prey. Turning to see who had fired on him,
he found himself facing the Wilamean Imperial Guard in a fleet of sky
fighters. The Imperial Air Corp engaged the Surfer in battle, but it
took him mere seconds to effortlessly cut their numbers in half. While
Hercules' grandchildren saved him from his fall, the Surfer declared he
had no more time to waste and destroyed the rest with a single massive
energy bolt. He then raced groundwards to attack Hercules again, flying
unconcerned and undamaged through a barrage of ion cannon fire. Ramming
Hercules the Surfer slammed both of them through the ground and into a
subterranean sewer treatment station. There, hovering above the...
waters... on his board he taunted the Olympian as Hercules climbed back
on to dry ground, suggesting that after he dismembered the Olympian he
would make Hercules watch as the Surfer destroyed everything he held
dear. Unimpressed, Hercules told the Surfer that he had faced many prior
Heralds and defeated them all, and with that he leapt to the Surfer and
delivered a devastating punch. Despite it sending the Surfer flying, the
Herald recovered in a few seconds, and the pair proceeded to slug it out
for several hours across the treatment plant. Gradually though it seemed
that Hercules, still suffering from past injuries, was tiring, and
spotting this the Surfer moved in for the kill, promising to put
Hercules out of his misery. Declaring that the Surfer was counting his
victories prematurely, Hercules snatched up a sharp piece of rubble and
threw it at the Surfer so hard that it penetrated his silver skin, going
all the way through the Surfer's left shoulder.
Shocked at being injured, the Surfer retreated,
giving the Wilamean guard, led by Hercules' three grandchildren, to get
to Hercules. He urged them to press the attack while the Surfer was
weakened, so Juno started throwing rubble at the alien. Enraged, the
Surfer slammed into her and held her head under the water, then demanded
Hercules surrender if he wanted to save her life. Hercules refused,
instead deliberately insulting Galactus, dubbing him a "cosmic dung
beetle." Losing all perspective and calling Hercules a blasphemer, the
Surfer lunged for the Olympian, releasing Juno in the process, and fired
off a cosmic energy blast backed by his full power. Fearing for his
grandfather, Ursus jumped in the way to shield Hercules, and was
vaporized. For a moment everyone paused in shock, then Hercules went
berserk and began pounding the Surfer mercilessly. Finally knocking the
Herald unconscious, Hercules picked up his board and broke it in two,
then slammed the sharpened broken midsection into the Surfer's neck,
killing him.

In Hercules: Prince of Power I#4 Galactus' herald was Nova. The Kawan Silver Surfer mentions in his flashback in Twilight of a God#2 that it took him several decades to locate Galactus, so Nova presumably left Galactus' service during that time, but whether she died, quit, got fired or something else happened is unrevealed. Hercules' granddaughter Juno became Galactus' next herald after the Kawan died, and Hercules confirmed that he knew the original Surfer, Norrin Radd. Since the history of Reality-829 apparently mirrored Reality-616 up until 1984 (real world time), it seems reasonable to assume that all the Heralds introduced in Marvel Comics to that date - Air-Walker, Firelord, the Asgardian Destroyer, Terrax - were also Heralds in this timeline.
How long did the Kawan serve Galactus? The
only set date given for events in Reality-829 was in Hercules: Prince of
Power II#1, which tells us that it is 2385 "by Earth chronology." That
series and the subsequent Full Circle graphic novel are set somewhere
between 30 and 41 years after the events of the first Prince of Power
series, depending on who you ask (see comments in the Earth-829
profile), and thus that length of time since the Brotherhood destroyed
themselves. In Twilight of a God the Wilamean Democracy, founded in Full
Circle, is about to celebrate its 75th Anniversary, meaning it is 105 to
116 years since the Brotherhood died, give or take a couple of years.
The scout spent "decades" looking before he finally located Galactus, so
we can shave a minimum of twenty years off that, possibly more.
Per the Kawan species entry in the 1980s
Handbooks the average height for members of their race is 10' tall, and
that fits their appearance in Hercules: Prince of Power I#3, where they
do tower over the 6'5" Hercules. The Silver Surfer's appearances don't
provide great height references, as he's mostly on his board and
somewhat crouched down, but he doesn't seem that much taller
than Hercules. Since it's unlikely that being given the Power Cosmic
shrunk him, I guess he was just short for his race?
This profile was completed on 08/17/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary's celebratory event to represent Hercules of the 24th century.
