History:

(Mystique I#6 (fb) - BTS) - Evangelina's father was a good man; before he died he told Evangelina, "if you give your life for others, you never really die."

(Mystique I#3) - Learning Evangelina Rivera had great mutant power, the Cuban military sent a squad to capture her. Evangelina used her abilities to cause a jeep to ram into a tree and made their semi-automatic weapons fire recklessly, but finally a team of men armed with revolvers encircled her. One of the officers was astonished to see how young she was but the commanding officer, General Luis Diosvil, took little heed as he injected Evangelina with a drug to knock her out.

(Mystique I#5 (fb) - BTS) - Evangelina was transferred to a holding cell at a military facility where the Cubans were preparing two black market Sentinel robots for use against Cuba's mutant population. Evangelina's ability to control machines made her a vital part of the operation as she was hooked up to the central processing unit controlling the Sentinels.

(Mystique I#5) - The mutant Mystique broke into the facility and found the room where Evangelina was hooked up to the central processing unit. As the Sentinels had already been launched, Mystique asked Evangelina how to shut down the central processing unit; Evangelina replied that she would have to use her gun to kill her.

(Mystique I#6) - As Mystique refused to kill her, Evangelina insisted, telling her the Sentinels had almost reached Havana, where they would begin to kill Cuba's mutants. Evangelina explained that if she died, the Sentinels would become "confused" and return to the base for instructions. Mystique still refused to kill her but Evangelina repeated her father's words - that if you give your life for others, you never really die. Reluctantly, Mystique started to raise her gun. Suddenly, Evangelina's brother Lazaro burst in and shoot Evangelina dead. Lazaro explained he had to kill her because she would never have been able to live with the deaths of others on her conscience but he couldn't let Mystique kill her because "only blood should spill blood." Lazaro tried to commit suicide over Evangelina's body but Mystique stopped him. Evangelina's body was left behind in the base, which was shortly afterwards destroyed by the returning Sentinels.
