Powers/Abilities: At least via wearing the armor of his predecessor as Radian, Kaz can manipulate photons of light; however, his specific abilities are unspecified. He can, at least, fly and disrupt the Phalanx attempts to enslave another, such as Doom. He is immune to laser and presumably other light attacks/effects.

    His armor likely provides some degree of resistance to injury.

    As an agent of the Y'Lestja, he could be resurrected from otherwise fatal wounds.

    His cerebral functions were altered by Y'Lestja computers, programming the intricate Y'Lestja language into him, allowing to speak and translate it fluently.

    Prior to his transformation via the Y'Lestja, Kaz was an experienced thief and scavenger. 

History:
(Doom 2099 I#5 (fb)) - Before Tiger Wylde and his elite seized power from the crumbling regional alliance, Kaz and his sister, Fortune, raided the Antikva Provo Marshal's kitchen for food. On the way home, they made a wrong turn into a dogpack -- trashboy scavengers. As the siblings were thieves rather than fighters, they were at the mercy of these attackers until the young Poet showed up and drove off the Dogpack. The thankful Fortune invited Poet back to their camp. 

(Doom 2099 I#15 (fb) / (Doom 2099 I#12 (fb) - BTS) <2090 AD>- While exploring China in spite of travel restrictions and seeking to avoid border patrols, Kaz and Poet bought a navigational unit from a Gurkha in Kathmandu who swore it would help them circumvent border patrols. They indeed avoided the Chinese guard, but they walked into an avalanche in the Himalayas. 

(Doom 2099 I#15 (fb) - BTS) - Poet survived, but he believed Kaz to have perished.

(Doom 2099 I#15 (fb) - BTS / Doom 2099 I#18 (fb)) - A metal sphere sent there at least centuries before by the extraterrestrial Y'Lestja collective saved Kaz of Latveria, preserving him in metabolic stasis

(Doom 2099 I#18 (fb)) - The beacon's computer performed neurological surgery on Kaz, altering his cerebral functions and programming in the intricate Y'Lestjan language.

(Doom 2099 I#15 (fb)) - <2094 AD> - Seismic activity in the Himalayas unearthed a large, metallic sphere of unidentified origin. An on-site research team determined that the sphere had been buried beneath the snow for centuries. 

(Doom 2099 I#15 (fb) / Doom 2099 I#18 (fb)) - Gaining entry into the sphere, an on-site research team -- apparently Feng Huang's scientists -- found evidence of an incomprehensible alien technology, they also found Kaz held in metabolic stasis by the sphere's systems. When they revived Kaz, he spoke in an alien tongue, unrecognizable to linguists.

    The scientists considered that the sphere had saved Kaz and turned him into a Rosetta Stone, the key to a civilization apparently preparing to make first contact with Earth.

(Doom 2099 I#18 (fb)) - Eager to ensure the economic and political advantages of first contact, Feng's scientists poked and prodded at Kaz.

(Doom 2099 I#18 (fb) - BTS) - Via their link to Kaz, the Collective determined that humanity was approaching a crossroads, and they concluded that this might be their last opportunity possible to fully join with humanity.

(Doom 2099 I#15 (fb) - BTS) - Kaz became a commodity fought over by the mercantile houses of the People's Republic and won by Feng Huang, the Red Phoenix of the South, the upstart whose economic maneuvers had challenged the ruling cadres.

    Feng Huang held Kaz aboard her zero gravity pharmaceutical manufacturing station, the Chin Shan platform.

    In a rare moment of lucidity, Kaz told Huang's sister, Lei Fong (then working for Huang), about his sister, Fortune. 

(Doom 2099 I#5 - BTS) - Fortune criticized Poet for having sworn to protect Kaz but having failed him. 

(Doom 2099 I#10 - BTS / Doom 2099 I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Lei Fong crashed her ship into the Zefiro camp, 

(Doom 2099 I#12 (fb) - BTS) - Lei Fong told Fortune that Kaz was still alive.

(Doom 2099 I#12 - BTS) - Wire told Poet that Fortune was on her way to China with Lei Fong, the pilot who told her that Kaz was still alive. Poet then headed east to join up with Fortune.

    In Moscow, Lei Fong and Fortune met up with Vytali Morkovkin who was to fly them to China. 

    After their arrival in Hong Kong, the trio was targeted by quartet of demon-clad agents of Feng Huang.

(Doom 2099 I#13 - BTS) - Feng Huang's demon-clad agents confronted the trio, but Lei Fong and Morkovkin defeated and/or slew their attackers, after which Feng Huang's agents burst into flames to eliminate traces of her failures. 

(Doom 2099 I#15 - BTS) - Via her contacts, Lei Fong learned where Kaz was being held and arranged transportation to take them there. 

(Doom 2099 I#15) - Aboard the Chin Shan platform, Kaz stared out into space, recalling nothing of his past life or even of the passage of time, he only heard in his head the chorus of another world, extraterrestrial melodies and rhythms that had been burnt into his brain. 

    Addressing Kaz as "Gypsy," Feng Huang noted that her astrophysicists assured her that contact was imminent, further noting that perhaps he was already aware of that. Oblivious to these words, he only considered that soon he would fulfill the role for which he had been resurrected. 

(Doom 2099 I#15 - BTS) - In Hong Kong, Lei Fong reunited with Fortune and informed her she had located Kaz and arranged transport to his location. They were then assaulted by a quartet of demon-clad agents of Feng Huang whom Lei Fong took out with a neural grenade. 

    Lei Fong then led them across the West Lama channel to Lantau's Kuanyin Air Base, where they infiltrated one of Feng Huang's space shuttles, posing as repair workers and joined by Fortune's ally, Poet. After Lei Fong took out the real shuttle crew and they began to the lift off sequence, however, they were betrayed by Morkovkin and taken into captivity. Eleven hours later they arrived aboard the Chin Shan platform where they were confronted by Feng Huang.

(Doom 2099 I#15 - BTS) - Meanwhile, investigating a transmission point responding to a deep space signal (which he could not translate), Doom (an apparent future incarnation of Reality-616's modern era's Victor von Doom) traveled to Kanchenjunga, Nepal and unearthed the sphere. Entering through a rough-hewn entrance he determined to have been recently made, Doom was struck down by the armored Radian. 

(Doom 2099 I#17) - After Feng Huang brought Kaz to see the new arrivals, Fortune rushed forward and hugged him, but Poet pointed out that his mind wasn't there. Fortune asked Feng what she had done to him, but she assured him, on the honor of her parents that she had done nothing to contribute to Kaz's condition: She further explained that they had found in thusly in an alien beacon left on Earth, and that she intended to use him to become the beneficiary of all of the technology of the alien race associated with that beacon.

    Radian subsequently arrived on the space platform, followed closely by Doom, who recreated the energy Radian used to follow him there. After removing his helmet, Radian approached Kaz, and the two discussed matters in an alien language. 

    Furious about her vessel being usurped, Feng Huang considered that she while had wanted to have Radian himself reveal his nature, she would settle about learning from a detailed autopsy; however, as she fired on Radian, Doom blasted her weapon and caused her blast to go wild, striking Kaz instead.

    Radian then announced the arrival of the Y'Lestja, whose energy-collective form approached the space platform.

(Doom 2099 I#18) - Having been lying inert on the ground since receiving the stray blast, Kaz began glowing with energy and levitated into the air, and Radian noted that the Ceremony of Communion was beginning. Doom then asked why the Y'Lestja had waited until now to appear when the exploratory beacon had been buried on Earth for millennia, and Radian clarified that via their link to Kaz, the Collective had determined that this might be their last opportunity possible to fully join with humanity due to its potential for self-destruction. 

    The life force of the collective began to surround the Chin Shan platform, and those within felt something soothing and warm wash over them. 

    Glowing, Kaz awakened and spoke, "We are Y'Lestja. We dance the light transcendent. We sing the harmony constant. We celebrate the forever rhyme. We share the bond universal. This is the melding. The point at which all barriers of flesh and form are swept away."

    Around the world, the presence of the Y'Lestja lit up the sky with a luminous burst that could not be ignored. 

    Continuing to speak for the Y'Lestja, Kaz continued, "We offer the totality of our travels, the poetry of our experience, the sensation of thousands upon thousands of different life forms...each unique, yet bound to another by the cosmic thread..." He further noted the lifestyles of the natives of Tsomnaia, and of the M'rglots of Drelys and the Eldrites of Va. Kaz continued, "This is the Y'Lestja's gift: A momentary glimpse of the magnificence of the universe, an understanding of the infinite diversity of life dusted across the cosmic plan. And from you, who represent Earth, the Y'Lestja seek only to grasp that which defines your existence, the symbols and metaphors and iconography that give your carbon-based lives meaning and substance. "

    "Your species' capacity to draw strength from its empathic abstractions may be its salvation. No matter your final fate, the Collective will sing of humanity until it too reaches its ultimate conclusion. The Y'Lestja thank you for opening your minds and souls to its collective consciousness."

(Doom 2099 I#18 - BTS) - Respectfully reporting the completion of his duties, Radian returned to the Y'Lestja the power allocated for his task. The Y'Lestja graciously rewarded Radian with freedom, and they told him to follow his own destiny. However, with Radian having relinquished control of the Chin Shan platform, Feng Huang used her base's weapons to blast and seemingly slay Radian. She then activated the station's self destruct sequence and departed. 

    Accessing the platform's blueprints, Doom sent Kaz (again seemingly mindless), Fortune, Lin Fong, and Poet on an escape pod. 

(Doom 2099 I#18 - BTS) - As Feng Huang tried to salvage Radian's armor, Doom confronted her, vowing that the armor was his. 

    Just before the Chin Shan platform detonated, yellow energy spiraled around the escape pod before departing for space, and Fortune correctly speculated that this was Radian, as energy could not be destroyed, only redistributed.

(Doom 2099 I#44 (fb) - BTS) - All present on the space platform where changed by the experience. Fortune's prescient abilities were expanded, while Kaz was given purpose and light. 

(Doom 2099 I#44 (fb) - BTS) - Although Doom salvaged Radian's armor, he lost it when he crashed in the Savage Land. The armor then found Kaz; at first he thought he was hallucinating, but he slowly came to understand the nature of his gift. 

(Doom 2099 I#44) - As the Phalanx invaded Earth, Kaz told Fortune that the experience with the Y'Lestja had changed them all. He then summoned the Radian armor and flew to free Doom, who was in danger of being subsumed by the Phalanx.

    Unharmed by lasers generated by the Phalanx because he commanded the photons of light energy, Kaz noted that he had not come there to engage in pointless battle. When the Phalanx asked if Kaz's masters sought to shatter the truce between the Y'Lestja and the Phalanx, Kaz clarified that the Y'Lestja had given him his power, but that while he was in their debt, he was not in their service. He further explained to Doom that the Radian he knew now existed in a purer state of being. 

    Kaz further pointed out that while the Y'Lestja celebrated the diversity of life across the universe, the Phalanx had no regard for the individuality of any other sentience. 

    When the Phalanx asked if he thought he could stand against their collective, Kaz informed them that he was this planet's protector now, and he returned the question, asking if they wanted to test him. 

    When Doom considered working with the Phalanx with the goal of saving 2099 from the global floodings, etc., Kaz argued that one could not negotiate with the Phalanx, and he reminded Doom that moments ago they were ready to assimilate him.

    Doom ignored Kaz's advice, and he instead initially worked with the Phalanx in an effort to save Latveria from flooding, etc. The story continued in 2099: World of Tomorrow, but I don't think Radian appeared therein...

    There is an unpublished Radian story here. It was presumably meant for a 2099 Unlimited story that never saw print. Kaz isn't in it, but it shows that Radian survived.
