Powers/Abilities: As an ordinary human, Frank Castle possessed no superhuman abilities before coming into contact with Venom but he was physically fit and proficient with firearms.

After bonding with the Venom symbiote, he gained a number of abilities, including superhuman strength and endurance. Following a brief association with Spider-Man, the symbiote was able to replicate some of his abilities, allowing the Punisher to crawl on walls and shoot webs. With the symbiote's help, the Punisher could generate weapons on his arms, change his appearance and fly by sprouting wings from his back. However, the Punisher's weakness was noise intolerance - excessively loud sounds, such as the ringing of a bell, weakened the Venom symbiote and also damaged the host.

History:
(What If? II#44 (fb)) - Frank Castle was a soldier who participated in the Vietnam War. He was married to Maria and had two children with her. Castle's peaceful life after the war was disrupted by the death of his family as a result of a shootout between criminals. Castle vowed to take revenge and decided to devote his life to fighting lawbreakers. He became known as the Punisher, a violent vigilante who did not make concessions to villains. The Punisher has faced many superheroes, including Spider-Man and Daredevil, and Castle's ally in his war with the underworld was Microchip. Being a Catholic, he periodically visited Our Lady of Saints Church, sometimes to give confession, sometimes to light candles for his late wife and children.

(What If? II#44) - Castle once again went to Our Lady of Saints Church to light candles for his family. Outside, he noticed Spider-Man and briefly reflected on his clashes with the hero. While Frank was lighting candles, an alien symbiote, which Spider-Man had recently gotten rid of, merged with him. Castle did not understand what had happened but felt something strange. He hurried outside and soon realized the situation when the symbiote mentally made contact with him as a new host but after whispering a few words, it subsided. The Punisher decided to keep the symbiote, as it reacted to his thoughts and did not seem to resist attempts at control. Castle returned to his hideout and asked Microchip to find out where the symbiote came from. The Punisher himself assumed that the symbiote could have been developed by the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization.

    While Microchip was searching for information about the symbiote, the Punisher decided to conduct "field tests" with the symbiote. He quickly figured out what abilities the alien suit possessed and how to use them for his own purposes. Taking the form of another person, Frank approached a criminal named Roky Vance and, throwing off his disguise, killed him. Vance's bodyguards took up arms and Frank did the same but the symbiote attacked them with a web similar to the one used by Spider-Man. The Punisher was not satisfied since the sticky substance did not lead to the death of his opponents. He tried to fix it and the suit started shooting bullets when Castle thought about it. The Punisher then brutally dealt with the criminal gang.

    Later that evening, Frank Castle returned to his hideout, pleased with how his war against the criminal world was progressing with the help of the Venom symbiote. He soon began to notice that he constantly felt tired and hungry, as if the suit was feeding on his energy, but he considered these reflections illogical, not knowing about the true nature of the symbiote.While he was sleeping, Microchip entered the room with the information he had managed to get. He said there wasn't much information to be found but the one thing that was known mentioned Spider-Man and the church. Venom, taking control of Castle's body, hit Microchip and knocked him out, grinning maliciously before heading to the very church where it all began. There, the Punisher (still under Venom's full control) saw Spider-Man and attacked him. The battle lasted for almost an hour, during which the superhero did nothing but dodge the Punisher's attacks. On the roof, Spider-Man ended up in Castle's hands. Venom insisted on killing him but Frank, who had returned to his senses, entered into an argument with the symbiote and pointed out that the Spider-Man was only a minor obstacle, not a criminal, and therefore did not deserve to die. Thanks to the alien's memory, Frank learned Spider-Man's secret identity and he also concluded that he could still control Venom.

    In the morning, the Punisher woke up full of strength and energy. Microchip chastised him for his strange behavior and violence towards him, and also expressed concern that in such a situation, the life of his son Microchip Junior could be in danger. Frank, probably still under the influence of the symbiote, screamed that everything was under control and that he didn't need Microchip before leaving. Frank then went directly after major figures in the criminal world, his first target being Lonnie Lincoln, aka Tombstone. The Punisher broke into the building housing Tombstone and dealt with the guards, then brutally killed Lincoln. The Punisher next broke into the Kingpin's office, where Typhoid Mary and Daredevil stood in his way. They failed to stop Castle and he murdered the Kingpin before jumping out of the window and disappearing. The symbiote tried to implant in the vigilante's head a desire to deal with Spider-Man and he almost succumbed, spending some time searching for the hero, before returning to hunting criminals. The next victim of the Punisher was Alfred Coppersmith.

    Taking control of Castle when it was time for him to rest, Venom headed toward a church, where Spider-Man (clad in his classic suit), Daredevil and Moon Knight awaited him on the rooftop. Possessed by the symbiote, Frank lunged at the superheroes, declaring his intention to kill them. He knocked Moon Knight aside and subsequently all three of them when they attempted to strike back. Venom then finally gained complete dominance over his host's mind and smashed through the church bell. Spider-Man fired at his foe using a sonic blaster borrowed from the Fantastic Four. Partially freed from the symbiote's influence, Frank thanked the superhero then used his pistol to shoot the sonic blaster, asking not to be interfered with. He confronted Venom face-to-face within the depths of his own mind. Castle stated that he would keep Venom and sustain him if the symbiote agreed to obey all orders without question; otherwise, he promised death. The symbiote agreed. Returning to reality, the Punisher informed the superheroes that, from that moment on, he was in full control of Venom and he set off in search of new adventures.

(Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe#3) - The Punisher was one of the inhabitants of the multiverse summoned to Earth-14112 by Chaos. Finding himself on the streets of New York in another reality, Frank began wreaking havoc but he was stopped by Spider-Man with the help of a massive bell.

(Reckoning War: Trial of the Watcher#1 - BTS) - An image of the Punisher and many other multiversal characters appeared before Uatu of Reality-616 as his father Ikor was reprimanding him for violating his oath and preparing to show him a "What If...?" scenario in which Uatu had never intervened.

(Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse#4) - The Punisher was one of many Venom variants taken under the control of the Hive-Mind and sent to battle against the Multiversal Spider-Totems, which, in turn, were controlled by the Web-Heart.

(Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse#5) - The Punisher confronted two Spider-Men from Earth-1048 - Miles Morales and Peter Parker - who managed to take him down. Later, along with the other possessed fighters, he was captured by Spider-Ham (of Earth-8311), who had bonded with the Venom Bloom of Earth-17239 and attained colossal size. When a compromise was reached between the Web-Heart and the Hive-Mind thanks to the efforts of Eddie Brock of Earth-2250, the Punisher was freed from the Hive-Mind's control and returned to his home reality.

    Earth-92164 diverges from Earth-616 after the events of Web of Spider-Man I#1. Since it's not just an alternate reality but an explicitly divergent version of the Prime Earth, it's safe to say that names of characters that weren't revealed in What If? II#44 are the same as those on Earth-616. Although Frank Jr., Lisa and Alfred Coppersmith weren't identified by name, I've chosen to list the names of their 616 counterparts instead of "unidentified son," "unidentified daughter" and "unidentified criminal," respectively. Also, we can assume that Castle's full first name is Francis.

    Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe begins on Earth-616 but ends with all of its events undone when the In-Betweener's two halves were restored to their singular selves. This alternate timeline was designated Earth-14112 and, therefore, is where the Punisher was transported. It's unclear what happened to him afterward or whether he was returned to his original Earth-92164.

    A distinct version of the Punisher from another reality, Earth-11171, appears in Venomverse: War Stories I#1 and Venomized I#1 & 3.

    The symbiote bonded to Frank Castle in What If? II#44 was never actually identified in-story, only in the issue's story title. It was confirmed to be called Venom in OHotMU A to Z HC Vol. 5's Alternate Universes Appendix in the reality description for Earth-92164. Given that this reality diverged from Earth-616 at a point earlier in time before the symbiote bonded with Eddie Brock, who on Earth-616 took the codename of Venom, I guess the Earth-92164 counterpart of the symbiote acquired the name Venom some other way...  --Proto-Man
