Malcolm Perry had no superhuman abilities.
He was experienced in advertising and
promotions, but he was also a moral and ethical man, and he was
uncomfortable with unscrupulous techniques he saw in his career and
company.
He was willing to risk his life against
what he perceived as true evil.
History:
(Saint Sinner#4 (fb) - BTS) -
Employed by an advertisement agency under Blake Murchison, Malcolm Perry
listed to a series of twisted pitches from Murchison. One of them
included a man who had made the wrong choice in a delivery company
(instead of National Express), being pulled from a boat by some
mysterious tentacled creature.
(Saint Sinner#4 (fb) - BTS) - Malcolm felt that the agency and its work were actually evil.
However, he was torn by the facts that he needed to support his family,
that he was too old to start over again, and concerns about the economy.
(Saint Sinner#4 (fb) - BTS) -
Malcolm's contemplations apparently served as prayers that opened a
portal and summoned Philip Fetter, aka Saint Sinner, a man
simultaneously possessed by the Angel known as Regina and the demon
known as Runesmith and dwelling in the realm known as Amen.
(Saint Sinner#4) - As Malcolm
continued to struggle with his concerns, Fetter appeared from him,
asking about the Tentacled One (aka Tentacle), which was a demonic
creature with which he had some knowledge. Malcolm explained that what
he knew was only from a TV commercial and couldn't be real.
As they witnessed a nearby purse snatching, Fetter used his powers to animate weeds to restrain the snatcher so that police could arrest him. Although Malcolm considered using the distraction to flee, he did not.
Fetter subsequently asked Malcolm about Murchison and his knowledge of the Tentacled One. Malcolm shared that Murchison was filming the monster spot right about then at the boat basin; however, he didn't think Murchison knew anything about any real monsters or demons, and he asked who Fetter was and why he was here. Fetter apparently introduced himself as Saint explained that Malcolm had called him, opening the gate, and that they had need of each other, and so he urged Malcolm to bring him to Murchison.
(Saint Sinner#4 - BTS) - Meanwhile, Murchison started filming his commercial, and Tentacle apparently slew the man directing the fake commercial monster as well as the actor in the boat.
(Saint Sinner#4) - Malcolm and Fetter arrived in time to watch Tentacle slay the two actors, and Fetter dove into the water and confronted Tentacle. As Tentacle opened a portal back to the Amen to meet with its other self/half, its other half released the demon smiths (the brethren of Runesmith, including Bladesmith, Clocksmith, Soulsmith & Unlockingsmith), which then possessed Murchison.
Having futilely warned Murchison of the approaching demons, Malcolm witnessed the possession followed by Murchison taking a boat out onto the water to fashion more fear. Seeking to stop this, Malcolm took another motorboat out after him. As Murchison filmed the Tentacled One reaching for its other self, Malcolm crashed his boat into Murchison's, although both men dove to safety to avoid the impact.
Somehow, as the two halves/selves of Tentacle touched, Philip Fetter's spirit was ejected from his body and into the Ectosphere. Having been attempting to tell Saint what he had been trying to do, Malcolm witnessed Fetter's spirit's exodus.
(Saint Sinner#5) -While driving in his Japanese car, Malcolm
wondered if Saint was still around, if he was alive or beyond life or if
he had drowned in the Hudson. He further asked if Saint still lived to
let him repay him for saving his soul.
Instead, Malcolm was surprised to find Fetter wander in front of his car and, unable to stop, he crashed into him. However, this was Fetter's body, under the control of the demon Runesmith, as Fetter's soul was still in the Ectosphere.
Distraught, Malcolm was pleased to see Fetter still standing, and he invited him into his car. He quickly realized that this was not Saint Sinner and wondered if he had just picked up a crazy homeless person. Fetter/Runesmith suddenly yelled for him to turn left, and the surprised Malcolm complied, only to immediately realize that he was going the wrong way on a one-way street. Unwilling to allow Runesmith to harm Malcolm, the angel Regina commanded Malcolm to push them (her and Runesmith in Fetter's body) out of the car. Malcolm complied and then kept on driving.
(Saint Sinner#5 (flashforward) -
BTS) - Malcolm went home and took a Valium (diazepam). Monday he would
look for a new job.
It's impressive how
differently Malcolm looks between issues #4-5. Same penciler and inker,
but differences between breakdowns and finishing, I guess.
This profile was
completed 09/11/2026, but
its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th
anniversary 's celebratory event to represent the Supernaturals.
