History:
(Uncanny Tales I#49/5 (fb)) - Jerry Owens was a repeat offender that had committed various crimes. While robbing a bank on his own, he wounded the bank's guard. After being caught, he was given a life sentence because he had committed his fourth offense. Jerry begged the judge for leniency but the judge called him unfit for association with decent people. Once while in prison, he was accused of sharing information on fellow convict Grogan's attempt to escape prison and the other prisoners called him a squealer, shunning him from their society.

(Uncanny Tales I#48/4 (fb)) - One day in 1956 while working in a prison road gang, Jerry made a break for it and escaped from the prison guards. Crossing a river, Jerry was able to throw the guards' bloodhounds off his scent. He hid out in a junkyard in the town of Wakefield until evening then snuck into a yard and stole a coat to help conceal his convict's uniform. However, a barking dog forced him to leave without changing all of his clothes. Finally, he came to Nevons Air Force Base and saw a spherical object on the tarmac. He decided to hide inside, only to learn it was a satellite. To study the effects of space on food supplies, it was filled with concentrated food, enough for 10 men to live on for a dozen years. Outside the satellite, Jerry could hear the prison guards talking to Air Force staff about the satellite. One Air Force officer mentioned the satellite would launch in five minutes.

(Uncanny Tales I#48/4) - As the minutes slowly passed, Jerry agonized over whether he should exit the satellite and be arrested or remain within and be exiled into space. He heard the satellite was designed to orbit for 50 years.

(Uncanny Tales I#49/5) - Jerry finally made up his mind to burst out of the satellite and run as fast as he could but he'd reached the decision too late-- the satellite was launched into orbit. Trapped in the satellite, he realized his quarters were far more cramped than any prison he'd been in. Over time, he began studying the instruments in the satellite, trying to glean how they functioned in the hopes he could send the satellite back to Earth before the 50 years were up. Unable to comprehend the instruments, he started kicking them with his feet. Finally, the satellite returned to Earth when its 50-year orbit was complete. Jerry had lost his mind from the lengthy confinement and believed he had returned to Earth early, unaware it was 2006. As he rambled incoherently, the men who watched him pitied him.
