History:

(Tales of Suspense I#40) - Marion went on a date with Tony Stark to the circus one night, when the big cats escaped from their cages. Tony pulled Marion away from the stadium and claimed he was going to call the police; he actually returned in his Iron Man armor, having just recently begun his adventures as the armored hero.

    After Iron Man recaptured the big cats, Tony returned to Marion. Marion told Tony how Iron Man had captured the animals, but she wondered why Iron Man wore such a "terrifying" costume. Tony asked her what she thought Iron Man should wear and she answered, "If he's a modern knight in shining armor, why doesn't he wear golden metal instead of that awful, dull grey armor? Then, when people see his golden armor, they won't panic! They'll know he has a heart of gold and an appearance to match his golden deeds!"

    Marion had to go on a trip to Granville and Tony saw her off to the airport, then painted his Iron Man armor gold, just as Marion had suggested.

    In Granville, the entire city fell under the hypnotic spell of Gargantus, an extraterrestrial robot. Marion was paralyzed in the street, but Iron Man came to Granville in search of her; he destroyed Gargantus and drove away the robot's masters.

    Marion returned to Tony in New York and told him how Iron Man had saved the people of Granville.

    In Iron Man I#84, the letter column published a letter from Kevin Martin, who suggested Marion was the same person as Marianne Rodgers but "Wouldja believe that our Marvel reporter on the scene caught the name just a little wrong, and it was none other than...?" The letter column editor didn't respond to the suggestion.
    George Olshevsky repeated this idea in his (self-published) Marvel Comics Index I#8.
    Since Marianne was introduced in Iron Man I#36 as an existing love interest of Tony Stark's whom he'd apparently known before he became Iron Man, it wouldn't be out-of-line for Marianne's continuity.
    However, as per Marianne's handbook entry in All-New Iron Manual, her first appearance remains Iron Man I#36. The Iron Man Index supports this as well. --Snood
