History:

(Captain Savage and His Battlefield Raiders I#14) - Manuel worked as a shoeshine boy in Manila when the country was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army. When the Leatherneck Raiders came to Manila to liberate five professors, Manuel met them in the street and offered to help hide them from the Japansese, directing them to a concealed manhole leading into the sewers. The Raiders called him "Angel" for helping them.

The Raiders eventually sent the professors out disguised as U.S. soldiers so they'd be put in a POW camp. The Raiders donned civilian garb as they planned their escape. Manuel asked to assist them, but Captain Savage insisted Manuel should stay behind and help his people liberate their land from the Japanese. However, Manuel followed them and used his skill at baseball pitching to hurl a grenade at a Japanese truck, destroying it.

When the Raiders decided to liberate the POW camp where they'd allowed the five professors to be held, Manuel tapped into a Japanese military telephone line to eavesdrop on their communications. To help get into the camp, Manuel provided a diversion by bringing a basket of fruit to the camp guards, including a message smuggled inside of an apple to alert the prisoners of the impending breakout.

While the imprisoned professors performed in drag inside the camp, Manuel fashioned replicas of the dresses for the Raiders so they could sneak into the camp. The armed Raiders attacked the guards inside the camp, enabling the five professors to escape. The Raiders left Manuel behind as they made their own escape from the Philippines.

The script claimed this story was set during 1942, but it featured John Kennedy commanding a PT boat, which didn't happen until 1943.

    According to Manuel:

  1. "My number one brother was a supply sergeant in the Phlippine Army!"
  2. "My number two brother is the camp sanitary engineer... garbage man to you, Joe!"
  3. "My number three brother works for the Manila Telephone Company!"
  4. "My number four brother is an acrobat!"
  5. "I could do it even if my number five brother didn't work for Pacifica Power and Light!"
  6. "My number seven brother is a magician!"
  7. "My number eight brother was a fireball pitcher for Mendoza High!"
  8. His number eleven brother isn't a dressmaker, "But number eleven's girlfriend is!"
