History:
(Crime Can't Win I#42 (fb) - BTS) - In pursuit of the Parisian robber and killer Rizac, police detective Auguste le Roc assumed the identity of Anton, nephew of Leroux, a bartender who hosted Rizac at his establishment. Auguste hoped to learn where Rizac had concealed the money he'd stolen in order to effect a complete arrest.
(Crime Can't Win I#42) - On May 19, 1890 when Rizac came to Leroux's tavern for a drink, "Anton" told Leroux they should scheme to steal Rizac's money. As Rizac refused to share his money with his girlfriend Anna, Anna agreed to assist Leroux and "Anton" in their plot. "Anton" suggested that if Rizac thought he was being followed by a policeman he'd run to his hiding place to protect his loot. Leroux and Anna agreed to "Anton's" plan, while Auguste simply donned his actual police uniform as part of the supposed "masquerade."
Anna told Rizac the police were after him and urged him to flee the tavern. As Rizac fled into the streets at night, Auguste followed at a steady pace. Rizac led Auguste into the sewers of Paris. Rizac finally confronted Auguste and warned him the sewers were his home, but Auguste reminded him the sewers would be opened in one hour. Unless Rizac surrendered himself and the money, Auguste warned him he'd be drowned in the sewers. Rizac refused to heed the warning so just before the hour, Auguste climbed out of the sewers to save his own life. Moments later, the sewers were floded with water and Rizac drowned to death.
Returning to Leroux's tavern, Auguste greeted his fellow officers, who were waiting for his return. Auguste informed his captain that Rizac was dead but the money was lost. Leroux and Anna were mortified to learn they'd been tricked by an actual police detective.

Anna was Rizac's lover but he refused to share his money with her. Auguste used her as part of his plan to trap Rizac by having Anna tell Rizac he was being followed by the police so that Rizac would flee to his hiding place.

Leroux was a wine merchant who owned a tavern. He had a brother named Charles who had a son named Anton but Leroux had never met Anton. When Auguste came to Leroux's tavern posing as Anton, Leroux was completely fooled. Auguste used Leroux as an unwitting accomplice in catching Rizac, claiming that he'd find the hiding place of Rizac's money so they could have it for themselves. Leroux was chagrined when he learned "Anton" was really Auguste le Roc of the police.

Rizac was a one-eyed Frenchman who committed several murders and robberies, including that of Andre Auriel. Rizac hid the money he'd stolen from Auriel in the sewers beneath Paris. Rizac enjoyed himself at Leroux's tavern and romanced Anna but refused to let anyone know where the money was hidden. Auguste le Roc tacked Rizac into the sewers to find his hiding place and warned him he'd be drowned when the sewers were flooded. Rizac refused to believe Auguste's warning and refused to surrender the location of the stolen money. When the sewers flooded that morning, Rizac was drowned to death.
