History:

(Defenders I#106 - BTS / Defenders I#115 (fb)) - Merging with the subconscious minds of a group of psychics (later referred to as Chorus), Nighthawk (Kyle Richmond) served as their physical anchor, enabling him to overpower opposition and set the self-destruct on August Masters' Secret Empire base in Mt. Charteris, Burton Canyon, Colorado to prevent their being used to kill everyone in Russia (see comments).

Staying in place until the last second, the psychics merged into a collective and tried to save Kyle but instead accidentally saved Masters.

(Nighthawk I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Kyle Richmond's terribly damaged body was found in the rubble of Masters' base by parties unrevealed.

Apparently unrecognizable and comatose body was identified as a "John Doe" and taken to an unspecified facility where he was cared for by Dr. Hildebrant and his staff (at least one female and one male assistant).

As "John Doe," Richmond remained in a coma for years.

After Dr. Hildebrant and his staff discovered that his health dramatically improved in the dark, Dr. Hildebrant devised a room without windows, feeling that the absence of light might make him whole again.

(Nighthawk I#1) - When Richmond finally awakened, Dr. Hildebrant was in the room observing some monitors with his assistants.

Dr. Hildebrant told "Mr. Doe" to relax and that he would explain everything when his patient felt up to it. Richmond told them that his name was Kyle Richmond.

The female assistant then explained how they had found his badly injured body under mysterious circumstances in the rubble of a building that had exploded and that he had been in a coma for years.

(Nighthawk I#1 (fb) - BTS) - Richmond's family estate paid for his care, and he underwent rehabilitation that took months.

Upon its completion, Richmond ignored his nurse's recommendations of caution in returning to the light, and he departed, swiftly returning to his identity as Nighthawk.

Comments: Created by Jim Krueger and Richard Case.

So, it's comic book fiction, but I don't know how Dr. Strange and the Chorus-possessed Over-Mind could not sense that Nighthawk/Kyle Richmond survived.
For discussion of multiple stories seeemingly confirming Nighthawk's death, see his profile.

It was a private room with a canopy bed in which Kyle revived from his coma. That is a pretty fancing room for a "John Doe." I figured that there was going to be more revealed about that, but 'twas not to be.
Additionally, he was reportedly found in a building that had exploded when he had actually been within a mountain base, but I suppose that the constructed base could be considered a building.
He was apparently injured in an explosion in Mt. Charteris, Colorado, and when he returned to activity, he was back in "Hell's Kitchen" (Clinton), Manhattan, New York...however, the location in which he recovered remains unrevealed.

It was the USSR that Masters was plotting to destroy in the original story, but that's topical as the USSR dissolved in December, 1991, which, due to the sliding timescale, was nearly two decades before the Fantastic Four's empowering space-flight in Fantastic Four I#1.

It's frustrating that Dr. Hildebrant was not given a first name, and even moreso that neither of his assistants were identified at all.

Dr. Hildebrant previously has a sub-profile under Nighthawk (Kyle Richmond), originally published 05/09/2007.

This profile was completed 03/17/2026, but its publication was delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.

CLARIFICATIONS:
Dr. Hildebrant
should be distinguished from:

unidentified female assistant

hildebrant-dr-nh-femfacehildebrant-dr-nh-femfull     Apparently a nurse affiliated with Dr. Hildebrant at an unidentified facility in an unspecified location, she assisted in monitoring and caring for the mysterious comatose "John Doe" (Kyle Richmond).

As Hildebrant had determined that Richmond's health dramatically improved in the dark, he designed a dark room without windows to help him recover. Hildebrant and his assistants wore
low-light goggles to enhance their vision.

When Richmond revived after years in a coma, she explained to him how he had been found and cared for.

She also apparently supervised his rehabilitation process, which took months.

After Richmond had completed his recovery, she told him how his family's estate had seen to everything, but she advised caution as his eyes were sensitive to light after so long in the dark.

Telling her he had waited too long already, Richmond disregarded her recommendations, and he departed, swiftly returning to his identity as Nighthawk.

--Nighthawk#1

Note: Kyle called her "nurse," so that's what's what I assume her role was. It's kind of crappy of Kyle to just call her nurse rather than calling her by name.

unidentified male (doctor, nurse, assistant or administrator)

hildebrant-dr-nh-maleupper     He was apparently a doctor, nurse, assistant or administrator affiliated with Dr. Hildebrant at an unidentified facility in an unspecified location in which the comatose Kyle Richmond was cared for as "John Doe."

Hildebrant and his associates wore low-light goggles to enhance their vision.

     He was
present as Richmond recovered, revealed his name and was informed of how he recovered.

--Nighthawk#1

Note: I don't believe he spoke, so we really can't say much of anything about his abilities or role.
