A contract killer, Harvey was highly skilled at remaining unnoticed
while quietly killing others:
"No
flashy
clothes, no flashy cars. Use a common-as-dirt handgun when you
can. Pick up your shells -- they're almost as good as fingerprints to
the feds...Don't talk to nobody, but don't be rude. When you grab
something to eat, don't hit on the waitress, but don't ignore 'er,
either. Giver her a good tip, but not a great one. A million other
things...Unremarkable -- that's the word I'm looking for. You don't
want nobody seein' you comin', an' you don't want nobody noticin' when
you leave.
An'
when it comes to dealin' with other criminals, keep your distance.
Especially from the ones that hire you.
You gotta be a
professional...or you're just a killer. An' killers get caught. That
kid I shot back there in the bathroom? He didn't know me from Adam,
an'
I didn't know him. An I don't wanna."
Neither knowing or caring about
his targets nor those who employed him allowed him to maintain a
comfortable level of detachment, and he killed without remorse.
He used a system, never meeting with those who hired him, instead two rings to his pager -- usually from a pay phone -- and then he called back, from another pay phone. The person hiring him gave him a location, usually a locker somewhere (such as a bus station or an airport), and told him where to find the key. In that locker would be a polaroid of the target's face, and the person hiring him would give him the details, including where to find the target or when would be the best time, and then a payment amount and asked if he would do it.
He used a pistol with a silencer.
Harvey smoked cigarettes, which causes a very characteristic odor and might make him much more memorable.

a car with "used not abused" painted on its windshield from a guy who
guaranteed the car and raved about its quality. He never did have a
problem with the car.

years before the main story> - Presumably under contract, Harvey
shot the guy from whom he had bought the car in a parking lot behind a
strip joint.

his efforts to maintain professional

some point, Harvey lost a shell casing down a heating vent and had to
go back three times to find it.
(Gun Theory#1 (fb)) <Three days before the main story> - Entering a house to fulfil a contract, Harvey shot one its residents, only after which he realized that the guy was not his target. Appreciating a door opening, he stepped behind and avoided the guy rushing in and shooting, whom he then shot and killed through the door, after which he took a picture of the victim...all the time thinking about what he was going to get to eat. Harvey subsequently called the person who hired him on the phone, telling him it was done.
As he picked up his payment and
left a picture, he noticed blood on his sleeve from the kid he had
killed. As this was his favorite shirt -- that a woman had given to him
a long time ago -- he took the shirt to Wing Wong's, a Chinese-owned
laundromat (figuring that they would not ask questions about a bloody
shirt), and on the way in, he collided with and knocking down a youth
with some netting/mask over his face who had apparently been robbing
the place. The youth reached for his gun, but Harvey reached for his
and stared down the youth, advising him, "Don't."
The youth wisely fled.
Appreciating that now the cops were going to show up, Harvey decided he would just burn the shirt and move on, but then a woman from the laundromat thanked him, noting that she had feared that the young man was going to shoot her. Entranced with the woman's beauty, Harvey helped her calm down and talked to her for awhile, ultimately telling her that the blood on the shirt was from a dog that had been hit by a car that he tried to save. She offered to get the stain out for free and then noted that the laundromat closed in an hour and maybe...
Realizing that he was talking way too much, Harvey told her that he had to get going. She told him that she appreciated what he had done and would not forget, and he silently considered that that was the problem...
(Gun Theory#2) <Tuesday> -
Harvey dreamed about the girl, but woke up alone.
Accepting another job, he ate in
an outside restaraunt near his targets, listened to their plans, waited
for them in a bathroom stall and then slew them both. After shooting
out the window with his silencer, he returned to his table, quickly
finished his meal, paid and then walked out before the deaths were
discovered.
As he slipped away, unnoticed, he saw the woman from the laundry, walking alongside a friend and her baby. He was surprised that she failed to turn her head and see him.
When he dropped the pictures and picked up the money, he found a picture with a dollar figure written on the back for a job in Chinatown (I'm uncertain whether the woman he knew was the target or whether he just knew it was near where she worked).
Returning to Wing Wong's, Harvey
asked the man working about the girl he had talked to the day before,
and the man named her as Linda. The man told Harvey she would be there
soon and asked if he could help him, but Harvey thanked him and left,
considering going there to have been a mistake. However, on the way
out, he encountered Linda, and she greeted him and gave him his shirt,
noting that the blood was too deep in the fabric to completely clean.
She then asked him out, and he replied, "Sure."

examined the wound in his abdomen and considered that this was not
supposed to happen to him, as he was better than this...a
professional...

Gun Theory was one of three
Epic series launched in 2003 (the other two being Crimson Dynamo and
Trouble). The other two series were published in full, but Gun Theory
only had 2 of 4 issues released. It was intriguing, but then...WTF
happened...
There was also 2004's Epic Anthology
13 years later (2016), Way and
Proctor published a full Gun Theory series under Dark Horse...in an
effort to complete the story for this profie/event, I bought the Dark
Horse collection. It was a cool story, and I enjoyed it; however, it
was completely re-written and re-drawn, so it is not the same
story/reality as the Epic version, the results of which remain
incomplete.
The difference is why:
Gun Theory seems to take place in a world without super-powers, but just because no superhumans, etc. are shown are mentioned does not mean they don't exist. As of the time when I write this profile (end of 2024), let alone when it is published, in the latter third of 2026, 2003 is way before the start of the modern era (with the Fantastic Four's empowering space flight taking place no more than 15 years before the current year of publication), so there significantly less superhumans around. There's nothing to contradict this story occurring on Earth-616 in 2003, and I'm not going to strengthen that argument by assigning a reality designation until something else confirms it as non-616...which is exceedingly unlikely.
As far as I could tell, Harvey's
surname was unrevealed (unless
Harvey was his surname, in which case his first name was not revealed).
This profile was
completed 12/21/2024, but its publication was delayed as it was intended
for the Appendix 25th anniversary 's celebratory event.
