History:
(War Adventures I#2) - Ross Hale was a reporter for the Daily Globe in
New York. When his editor assigned him to go to Korea to report on the
Korean War, Ross objected that covering the war was "waste of time."
Ross saw the Korean War as nothing more than a "skirmish" and predicted
it would be over by the time he arrived. Ross' editor insisted that he
go but Ross flippantly claimed going to Korea would be like going on a
vacation.
On his way to Korea, Ross stopped in Tokyo, Japan and visited the correspondents' club. Ross recognized some of the other journalists there who were likewise on their way to Korea. When he called it a "phony assignment," another reporter, Parker, insisted the Korean War was a real war. Ross asked Parker why he wasn't already in Korea to cover it and Parker answered that he hadn't yet received clearance to enter the country. Parker retorted that Ross must be calling it a "phony war" because he was too yellow to join the army. Angered, Ross attacked Parker and they scuffled until they received word that their travel to Korea had been approved.
Arriving in Korea, Ross took notice of the injured soldiers and visited a cemetery where American soldiers had been buried. All the same, Ross told himself that the armies of the United Nations were so superior to that of North Korea that surely the war wouldn't last much longer. Ross then observed as U.S. soldiers went into battle against North Korean forces. Although initially the U.S. forces triumphed over ground forces, Chinese tanks moved in and killed the entire squad of U.S. soldiers. Finally humbled by what he'd witnessed, Ross wrote up a story about the events called "the Story of a Slaughter."

Ross Hale should not be confused with:
Parker was a reporter with a U.S. newspaper called the Gazette. He was sent to cover the Korean War but had to wait in Tokyo, Japan until he received clearance. When Ross Hale showed up in Tokyo and insinuated the war was "phony," Parker took offense at that and accused Ross of being "yellow" for not joining the army. The two got into a fight that ended when they learned they'd received clearance to enter Korea.
