History:
(My Girl Pearl I#7/7) - Joe was standing by his taxi cab at a taxi stand when the high school student Pearl Dimly walked by. Joe asked if she'd like a cab but she answered she "have no place to put it!" Despite her confusion, she accepted a ride from him but when he asked her for the address of her school she refused, saying she never gave her address to strange men.
Just then, a police officer walked by and recognized Pearl. The policeman told Joe all the old cab drivers knew who she was; Joe wondered how any of them could have lived to be "old" while knowing her. The policeman told Joe she went to Midville High School and that she was "a good kid-- just a little dumb!" Joe retorted, "Thanks for telling me... I thought she was a genius!"
Joe drove Pearl to Midville High School and told her the fare was 75 cents; she gave him a dollar, "take it or leave it!" Just as Joe started to relax he realized Pearl had left her purse in his cab. He went into the school in pursuit of her. He asked a student if he'd seen her and when Joe described her as being "so dumb she thinks a house-fly is a building with wings!" the student immediately identified her as Pearl Dimly.
Joe went to Miss Blister's classroom and explained to the teacher he was there to return Pearl's purse. Pearl claimed it couldn't be hers because her purse was black, wide and had a monogram on it. When Joe showed her purse was indeed black, wide and had a monogram and asked, "What do you think this has?" Pearl thought it was a guessing game. Despite her lack of brains, Joe admitted Pearl was cute and asked if she'd go bowling with him that evening. Pearl answered she had no bowls. He said he'd pick her up at 7 but Pearl said she didn't expect to fall down. When he gave her his name as Joe Grogan saying, "I almost forgot," Pearl told him he should write his name down so he wouldn't forget it. Joe left the school in a daze from Pearl's scatterbrained responses.
Comments: Created by Stan Lee, Stan Goldberg and Sol Brodsky.
For a character with one appearance, Joe Grogan has a convoluted origin behind-the-scenes. The CBS radio program My Friend Irma (1947-1954) was a powerful franchise, leadings to two motion pictures (1949 and 1950) a television series (1952-1954) a comic strip (1950-1951) and a Marvel comic book (1950-1955). Stan Lee and Dan DeCarlo created most of the stories in both the comic strip and the comic book. With My Friend Irma off the air, though, Marvel launched My Girl Pearl in 1955 to replace it. For example, the blonde, dim-witted lead character Irma Peterson was replaced with the blonde, dim-witted Pearl Dimly; Irma's steady boyfriend Al was replaced with taxi driver Flash Grogan, whom DeCarlo even drew with the same distinctive hat he'd given Al. Many issues of My Girl Pearl recycled scripts directly from Lee and DeCarlo's My Friend Irma. The comic was cancelled with issue #6 in 1957 during the "Atlas implosion" but Lee brought it back in 1960 with issue #7 - but by that time, DeCarlo had moved on to Archie comics. Lee replaced him with Stan Goldberg and completely rebooted the series; Pearl was now a dim-witted high schooler instead of a dim-witted secretary. Some of her cast were retained and adapted to suit the new format (Pearl's boss Mr. Wortle became her principal Mr. Wortle). Stan still loved recycling old scripts and this time he had Goldberg retell the story from My Girl Pearl I#1 which introduced Flash Grogan, changing the taxi driver's name to Joe Grogan.
However, while Flash Grogan's introductory story - where he drove Pearl to work then wound up dating her - didn't work out quite the same when it was adapted into Joe Grogan. Lee and Goldberg had decided the teenaged Pearl Dimly's boyfriend would be Flash Nelson, so Joe Grogan wasn't being set up as a series regular - he drove Pearl to school, then off to oblivion with his predecessors, Flash Grogan and Al.
