Powers/Abilities:
Garafyn is a large and powerful gargoyle, possessing superhuman strength
(he can strike a person (or an Adoni, at least) hard enough to break his
or her neck) and durability (he may or may not be composed of rock or a
rock-like substance).
He has large, pointed horns, which can presumably be used as weapons, as well as horns that allow him to fly, regardless of his body composition.
He may possesses other abilities,
He noted travel through time previously, but that was likely transportation provided by Morgen.
With a Merlin medallion, he could
teleport, travel through time and space, and presumably disguise himself
as human (as he at least claimed to be utilizing a bus pass).
Any abilities Garafyn possessed as a
human are unrevealed.
History:
(Lords of Avalon: Sword of
Darkness#5 (fb) - BTS) - Originally a human, Garafyn was transformed
into gargoyle form under unrevealed circumstances. He eventually king of
the gargoyles, although he was prone to shattering some of them when
they pissed him off.
Garafyn was pressed into serving Morgen, whom he secretly hated and referred to as "Queen Bitch." He notably was annoyed when she danced around in her red dress to "crap-ass music" and to her constant demands to travel to the 21st Century to bring her back some Starbucks, where he sometimes claimed to just be a person filming a Spielberg film.
Garafyn spent enough time in the 21st
Century to be familiar with modern technology, businesses and jargon.
(Lords of Avalon: Sword of Darkness#5 (fb) - BTS) - After of the dark Pendragon Kerrigan destroyed gargoyles assaulting his castle, Joyous Guard, Garafyn traveled to the castle's gate at Morgen's behest to meet with Kerrigan (and presumably .
(Lords of Avalon: Sword of
Darkness#5) - After Kerrigan's servant, the mandrake Blaise, announced
Garafyn's presence, Kerrigan met with him, initially disinterested in
anything he or Morgan had to say. However, after advising him that he
would likely die and his lover, Seren, would be sacrificed to take their
child, Kerrigan agreed to parley, and Garafyn advised him to look angry,
as Morgen was watching remotely (but presumably could not hear them).
Garafyn then explained that Kerrigan could not feed to restore his power
when his shields were up, and he was too weak to safely transport
himself, Seren and Blaise to safety; additionally, Morgen would be able
to locate him via Seren carrying his child. 
Garafyn then suggested that they
instead join forces against Morgen, acknowledging that while Kerrigan
could not fully trust him, they both had no choice, as Garafyn might be
injured or killed in the assault against Kerrigan. He alternatively
advised that him (Garafyn) and some of his friends could hold back the
horde long enough for Kerrigan to recharge his batteries and get them
out of there. In return, Garafyn jokingly noted that he wanted to be a
human being again and to have some world peace, but since neither of
those things was ever going to happen, he wanted a little piece of
magic, which a gargoyle could only gain from a Merlin's medallion such
as the one Kerrigan possessed, to help him hide somewhere that Morgen
could not find him.
Garafyn continued that he had no real problem with Kerrigan, other than that he had been known to blast a few gargoyles into dust for no particular reason, but he noted that he himself had been prone to do the same. He then elaborated on the plan, noting that Morgen first send in the gargoyles and the adoni (dark fey/elves), but that Garafyn would make sure his men arrived first and that they would be by the nearby oak by 10am the next day, after which Kerrigan should bring down the shield and feed partially on Seren's energies and then transport them all away. At Kerrigan's query, Garafyn noted he only trusted Kerrigan because of how he had changed due to Seren's presence and love. Before departing, he answered Kerrigan's other query, stating that he would tell Morgen that Kerrigan was a "$#@%head who wouldn't listen to reason."
The next day, as Garafyn led his allies
-- also apparently humans-turned gargoyles -- to move toward Kerrigan,
the Adoni identified them as traitors. Garafyn struck the head adoni
from behind and led his allies to Kerrigan's side, only to find that
Kerrigan could not drain enough power from Seren without killing her,
which he refused to do. However, Seren had also recovered her own Merlin
medallion, and she and Kerrigan chanted a spell that transported
themselves, Blaise, Garafyn and his ally (an unidentified green
gargoyle) to New York's Sterling Forest in the 21st
Century. However, before they could do anything
further, some of the Adoni either opened their own (or Morgen's) portal
or accessed the one Seren and Kerrigan had opened. When one of the Adoni
grabbed Seren and tried to rush back through the portal, Garafyn broke
his neck, but was chastised for killing him as Kerrigan could have
otherwise could have fed on him. The green gargoyle then captured one of
the Adoni, upon whom Garafyn fed, but then another of the Adoni grabbed
Seren and headed through the portal.
(Lords of Avalon: Sword of
Darkness#6) - After Kerrigan blasted and then drained the life from the
Adoni who had tried to abduct Seren, Garafyn jokingly commented, "Good to the last drop, huh?"
Unamused, Kerrigan told Garafyn not to start with him, as he was now
powerful enough to tear off his wings, and Garafyn acknowledged his
point. Kerrigan instead then used his power to create a temporary
scrambler to keep Morgen's forces from pinpointing their location for a
little while. Garafyn suggested that it would be easier to hide if
Kerrigan and Seren split up, as the power of three Merlins was pretty
damn hard to miss. Although unwilling to leave Seren unprotected,
Kerrigan gave Garafyn the Merlin medallion as payment, and he thanked
him and, before he teleported himself and the green gargoyle away, noted
that maybe someday they would be able to return the favor. Kerrigan told
Garafyn that he already had.
(Lords of Avalon: Sword of Darkness#6 - BTS) - Appreciating that Garafyn had been right about needing to separate to prevent Morgen from locating Seren and their unborn child, Kerrigan gave his sword to the god Brea and had him take Seren to Avalon.
Ultimately, however, Morgen captured
Kerrigan, and Kerrigan traveled to Camelot to free him.
(Lords of Avalon: Sword of Darkness#6) - Garafyn subsequently arived with a legion of true gargoyles, pretending to be protecting Morgen, but actually having his legion hold her back. Garafyn then returned the Merlin medallion to Kerrigan so he could teleport them, Seren and Blaise away; he did not care whether Morgen destroyed the true gargoyles; he jokingly urged haste, as there were only two weeks left on his Greyhound pass. Kerrigan transported the group to Avalon.

The two Marvel series are based on the first two novels (out of 8 thus
far) by Sherrilyn Kenyon. They are an alternate Arthurian history, set
mostly in a version of Britain a few centuries after Arthur's demise.
Morgen (sic) has seized power, Merlin is a woman and leads the remnants of
the Knights, now calling themselves the Lords of Avalon.
It was intended to be Dabel Brothers, but they and
Marvel went their separate ways towards the end of 2007, with Marvel
taking up the stuff that was already in production:

While Kerrigan, Seven and their children were shown to live happily ever after, I don't believe Garafyn was seen again.
Per Lords of Avalon: Knights of
Darkness#4, goylestones are rocks
that grow into gargoyles. That's apparently the origin of natural-born
gargoyles, although Garafyn and some others were
humans-turned-into-gargoyles, and returning to human form was apparently
not possible.
This profile was completed 01/10/2026, but its publication was
delayed as it was intended for the Appendix 25th anniversary
's celebratory event.
