History:
(Thunderbolts I#31 (fb) - BTS) - Born into wealth and
privilege, Hesperus Chadwick established an extraordinary public medical
career. He became recognized as one of the world's three leading
cardiovascular surgeons, developed new surgical procedures, invented
artificial heart valves, saved thousands of patients and made a large
personal fortune.
(Captain America I#195 (fb) - BTS) - Chadwick became involved with the
Royalist Forces of America.
(Captain America I#195 (fb) - BTS) - Chadwick fathered a daughter,
Cheer, and raised her according to the elitist philosophy of the
Royalist Forces of America. Cheer grew up believing that the Elite were
superior by birth and that their own welfare took precedence over that
of the so-called rabble. Even as an adult she remained devoted to her
father, habitually referring to him as "Poppa" or "Papa."
(Captain America I#195) - While Captain America and the Falcon were
trapped inside the Royalist Forces' underground stronghold, Cheer
contacted her father after the two masked heroes began asking questions
about the Madbomb. Responding via video with his face concealed in
shadows, Chadwicks assured her that the intruders would soon be dead. He
revealed that the great Madbomb had already been installed at its
designated location and awaited the appointed hour. When the time came,
the Madbomb operation would be activated, destroying freedom in America
and allowing the Elite to assume what Chadwick considered its rightful
place as the nation's ruling power.
(Captain America I#196 - BTS) - Cheer identified her father as one of
the "big wheels" controlling the Royalist movement while she oversaw the
Kill-Derby involving Captain America and the Falcon.
(Captain America I#197 - BTS) - General Argyle Fist and his troops
assaulted the Royalist Forces' subterranean headquarters just as its
followers turned on Captain America and the Falcon.
(Captain America I#197) - Chadwick's men retrieved Cheer in time and
father and daughter escaped through the tunnels in their private
pneumatic car. When an explosion rocked the complex behind them,
Chadwick calmly dismissed it as a minor setback and explained that the
blast would seal the tunnel and delay pursuit. Chadwick and Cheer
successfully escaped the fall of the base.
(Thunderbolts I#31 (fb) - BTS) - Years later, the
Royalist movement resurfaced and reinvented itself in a more ambitious
form. Its public recruitment arm became known as the Imperial Forces of
America while the Elite adopted the identity of a new Secret Empire.
Baron Helmut Zemo supplied support and Arnim Zola's genetic work helped
provide the organization with superhuman operatives, including Brute
Force. Chadwick applied his own scientific talents to the cause by
developing the Shriequencers, sonic weapons intended for mass
deployment.
(Thunderbolts I#31) - Operating from Cornwallis Base in the Rocky
Mountains, Chadwick conducted a Shriequencer test on a room filled with
recent recruits that the Secret Empire had deemed to be too weak, sickly
and elderly to be of use. Citizen V secretly watched from an air duct as
Chadwick activated the device. The Shriequencers' vibrations caused its
targets to collapse and die in agony, bleeding from their ears and
noses. When several survived, Chadwick coldly ordered a trooper to
dispose of them. Chadwick then reported the results to William Taurey.
He boasted that the experiment had "improved" the human gene pool and
achieved an 84 percent success rate, their best result to date. Taurey
was dissatisfied: the Secret Empire intended to position Shriequencers
in major cities including Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles,
and he demanded a weapon dependable enough for their plans. Chadwick
assured him they were building on earlier research, becoming more
effective with every test and would soon achieve the desired result.
(Thunderbolts I#31 - BTS) - Chadwick's daughter Cheer was gleefully
giving a tour to the Thunderbolts when they tried to infiltrate the
organization by posing as new recruits. She strung them along until the
heroes could be subdued by the Elite's forces.
(Thunderbolts I#31) - Chadwick stood beside Cheer and Taurey as Hawkeye
finally recognized their organization from Captain America's stories
about the Royalist Forces of America. Taurey confirmed the connection
and announced that the reborn organization now called itself the Secret
Empire, no longer content with ruling one nation but intending to
dominate the world.
(Thunderbolts I#32) - Chadwick remained with the Elite at
Cornwallis Base while the captured Thunderbolts were forced into
gladiatorial combat against Brute Force and the Empire's shocktroopers.
(Thunderbolts I#32 - BTS) - After planting charges in Chadwick's lab to
destroy the Shriequencers, Citizen V sent an SOS to U.S.Agent and the
Jury who rushed to her location in time to help out the Thunderbolts in
the arena. What began as blood sports turned into a losing fight for the
Secret Empire, forcing the Elite to consider abandoning Cornwallis.
(Thunderbolts I#32) - After Baron Zemo refused Taurey's request for
further help, Chadwick separated from Cheer and Taurey and headed back
to his laboratory. He intended to recover his notes and Shriequencer
schematics, reasoning that even the loss of the experimental equipment
would not matter because the documents would allow him to rebuild at
Burgoyne Base. Chadwick also planned to activate unspecified "suicide
measures" implanted in the Empire's underclasses before leaving. Citizen
V was waiting for him in the laboratory. She greeted Chadwick by name,
complimented his latest article in the New England Journal of
Medicine and then revealed that she had witnessed what his
Shriequencer did to human beings. She then taunted him by pressing the
detonator. As his lab began blowing up around himd, Chadwick fled for
his life. Citizen V pursued him, reasoning that destroying the equipment
was insufficient as long as its designer remained free. She caught
Chadwick before the Elite escaped and emerged from the ruins with him as
her prisoner.
(Thunderbolts I#32 - BTS) - Unaware of Citizen V's involvement in the
caper, Taurey believed the Thunderbolts had kidnapped Hesperus Chadwick,
though the heroes didn't even know who he was talking about.
(Last Defenders I#3 - BTS) - Cheer Chadwick allied herself with the Sons
of the Serpent and provided the hate group with schematics for the Mad
Bomb. She told the Supreme Serpent she had dedicated herself to her
poppa's dying wish: to rid themselves of the lower classes (see
comments).
Comments: Created by Jack Kirby and D. Bruce Berry.
Talk about a reveal decades in the making. It only took 23 years for
Busiek and Bagley to show us who this unseen "Poppa" really was. To
their credit, they gave him a name and a look that's as close as you can
get to an actual 1970s Jack Kirby character.
Chadwick's fate after Citizen V captured him remains unrevealed, though
in Last Defenders his daughter Cheer claims he's dead. Details
about his demise have yet to be revealed. Maybe she simply assumed he
died in the destruction of Cornwallis base. It is possible Citizen V
simply handed him over to the authorities and he died in prison.
However, it's more likeable the V-Battalion found a use for a
world-class surgeon and weapons designer. Being a homicidal
megalomaniacwith delusions of grandeur has never exactly been a
disqualifying character trait in that organization.
