History:
(Journey into Unknown Worlds I#45) - Harry was out driving his car when he beheld a flying saucer overhead which soon came to rest on the ground in a field outside Hoppsville. Driving to the office of constable Ned Taylor, Harry told him what he'd seen and advised Ned to bring in the National Guard. Ned wasn't interested in pursuing flying saucers but, to placate Harry, he deputized him, giving him a badge and gun and telling him to investigate the flying saucer.

    Harry returned to find the flying saucer still where it had landed. Climbing inside, he started to peer around when he struck his head and fell down a ladder. Unconscious, Harry didn't realize that while he was asleep, the owners of the flying saucer had flown back to their home planet, Jupiter.

    Awakening on Jupiter, Harry believed he was still on Earth. Exiting the flying saucer, he saw a sign indicating he was outside Bay City. As there was a Bay City ten miles from Hoppsville, he believed he'd been flown only ten miles. He ran into the town and reported what he'd seen to the police but the police had no interest in his story. He tried to telephone the mayor and explain but the mayor had no interest in his story of a flying saucer. Looking into the sky, Harry beheld a large number of flying saucers and believed an invasion of Earth had begun. He decided he would have to inform the capital and boarded a train bound for the capital.

    Arriving in the capital, he found it was a futuristic city unlike any on Earth and believed Washington D.C. had already been conquered. He told a Jovian that he had come to report seeing a flying saucer. The Jovian answered that wasn't unusual since Jupiter had been using flying saucers and rocket ships for over a hundred years. The Jovian realized then that he was talking to an Earthling and offered to throw him a party to welcome him to Jupiter. His confusion explained, Harry decided he was glad to be on Jupiter and thought he'd enjoy himself living there.

    How on Jupiter did Harry operate a pay phone on the planet Jupiter with his U.S. currency? Of all the ways in which Jupiter is coincidentally just like the USA in this story, that's the detail that troubles me the most.

Ned Taylor

Ned Carter was the constable of Hoppsville. After Harry Carter saw a flying saucer, he informed Ned but Taylor told him if he spent his time investigating flying saucers, he'd have little time for anything else. Rather than conduct an investigation, he deputized Harry, giving him authority to look into the flying saucer and presenting him with a badge and gun. He sarcastically told Harry he could arrest any "strange creatures" he saw.
