CAPTAIN JOHANNESBURG

Real Name: Unrevealed

Identity/Class: Alternate reality (Earth-21463) human, British citizen (or his Earth's equivalent thereof), probable magic mutate, probable power enhanced by costume (see comments)

Occupation: Agent of the Corps

Group Membership: Corps (Captain Britain-616/Brian Braddock, Captain England-522/Henric Lockwood, others)

Affiliations: Jamie Braddock

Enemies: Horoam'ce and his demon hordes

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Otherworld

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Force I#21 (April 2012)

Powers/Abilities: Assuming he possesses similar abilities to the majority of the Corps (which isn't guaranteed - there are variations), Captain Johannesburg possesses superhuman abilities similar to and presumably at a similar level to Captain Britain's: superhuman strength (lifting 90 tons), flight (up to 770 mph), enhanced reflexes, stamina and senses. Again like his fellow Corpsman, he presumably is powered by interdimensional frictional energies focused in a matrix centered on the island of Great Britain (or whatever name it goes by in his reality).

Hair: Unrevealed

History:
(Uncanny X-Force I#21 (fb) - BTS) -
A member of the Corps, Captain Johannesburg was among the defenders of Otherworld when it was attacked by the forces of the demonic hordes of Horoam'ce. When the fallen corpses of fellow Corps members were raised as zombies to attack the Corps' headquarters, the Starlight Citadel, Johannesburg raced to inform the Corps' leader Captain Britain-616 of this development.

(Uncanny X-Force I#21) - Captain Johannesburg burst into a meeting between Captain Britain-616, Captain England-522 and Jamie Braddock-616 to inform them of the attack, explaining that because the attackers were revived Corps members they had managed to get very close to the Citadel before the guards realized they were undead and so enemies.

Comments: Created by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini.

Captain Johannesburg wasn't identified in the issue itself, but was named in the script:
P17. As the three men get to their feet a Capt. Johannesburg runs in, panicked.
Capt. Johannesburg: "Lord, we are under attack!"

There was another Captain Johannesburg in the previous issue; it's possible that Remender intended the one in Uncanny X-Force I#21 to be the same person, but if so then he didn't make it clear enough in the script because the artist depicted a white guy in armor who in no way resembled the black woman from the prior issue. For many groups the presence of two people with identical codenames might be a problem (less so these days, thanks to other multiversal teams and an increasing number of 616 characters taking up this confusing practice - I'm looking at you Spider-Men and Captains America!) but the Corps was established from the outset to have umpteen people with matching codenames and/or very similar costumes. And the script does say "a" Captain Johannesburg runs in, which does sound like he's intended to be one of many, and so it not being the same one might be intentional. There are other very similarly dressed defenders, presumably other Corps members, seen elsewhere in this issue, most notably one that is shown teleporting from the battlefield on p9 and then informing Captain Britain and Saturnyne on p11 that the battle was lost. However, the script calls that character simply a "Knight," and given that Corps members can wear very similar outfits and we do see multiple people wearing identical armor in some panels, I think we've got to take it that the panel above is the only time we see this iteration of Captain Johannesburg. Nevertheless, I've included on the left the panel that most clearly shows the other knight because even if it isn't Johannesburg, they were wearing apparently matching armors and this shows that outfit more clearly.

Since we only have a head and upper body shot of Captain Johannesburg there's no way to accurately estimate his height or weight. He doesn't look to be of remarkable height, neither overly tall nor short, nor does he look overweight, but that's about as far as we can go.

As with his namesake, his name suggests a world where the Dutch took over the British Isles (or whatever that geographic region is called in his reality).

If he survived the assault by Horoam'ce's forces then he would presumably have been killed when virtually the entire Corps was destroyed in New Avengers III#30 by the Beyonders.
